I’ve only recently found your channel and I’m so glad I did. Thank you for your authenticity, humor, and joy you convey in each video. Keep them coming, they’re WONDERFUL! Take care and stay safe.
Your powder room is lovely. I've watched several of your reno vlogs but hadn't decided to subscribe. Well, your words about deciding to learn more about systemic racism, and how you contribute to it, made me tear up a bit and I subscribed. I am in the same position. I need to listen, learn, and then, with THEIR guidance, actively help makes things better for my Black neighbors. Thank you for speaking up!
Im so gald that you mention BLM. It is overwhelming these pass couple of weeks, however i feel over the moon that other countries are hosting protest not only for the unfortunate events in the US, but also encourage change in their home town. And for more education on racism and other forms of racism. There are movies/documentary stories on Netflix, books by activist, and i will also recommend learning about racism in public and private education for our youth. 💛
Absolutely loving your content. I've had your videos (oldest to newest) on in the background as I work from home (just like having real colleagues!). Absolutely cannot wait to do my own renovations as we are planning on buying an older house next year.
Love what you’re doing to your house! I have been renovating for the last year and nearly finished, I think I will really miss it when it’s all done xx
Its important that we also educate ourselves on racial injustice in the UK, especially the colonial history. We often see the George Floyd situation as an American one, but in fact a large proportion of white settlers in the US were from Britain and many similar events have and are occurring right here too. The racism runs deep! Btw, I’m enjoying your channel, lots of inspo while I house hunt! X
You are doing such a fabulous job with the house! I just want to leave one tip about the wallpaper removal. When i strip wallpaper, I first scratch it with a old exacto knife so the moisture can get in easier then I apply diluted (with water about 50/50) wallpaper paste. After that I cover it with plastic sheets and do other jobs while the moisture penetrates the wallpaper. Sometimes I've left over night even. After that it's hopefuly easy to scrape off the wallpaper. Haha, lazy by nature I'd rather let the materials work for me instead.

Try using a mixture of fabric softener and warm water in a spray bottle for stripping the bottom layer of wallpaper. Doesn't blow the wall like a steamer and it smells nice!
I've done it also !😊 Especially the lighting that doesn't require me to touch constantly. Because, if the switch is on the fixture the paint can be scratched thru. ❣️
Your videos are honestly some of my absolute favourite on UA-cam and it makes me want to renovate an old home so much! Sadly here in Canada they're not nearly as protected as in the UK so a lot of older houses are bought for millions by developers and torn down for new builds instead of giving someone the chance to restore them :(
I believe the bottom part of the wall paper it's called *ANAGLYPTA* and it might be original to the house since it is very common on victorian houses. It's kind of a paper paste therefore dificult to remove. It still produced. Loving your series.

Hey Laura, thank you for using your platform to take a stand and educate people on the BLM movement. One thing I've heard from the black community is that we shouldn't be encouraging movies with white savior narratives. One of those movies they gave as an example is the help.
Surprised, but glad, you documented the BLM movement and killing of George Floyd during this time. We don't live in a bubble and the fact that you've acknowledged this and sought to learn more is a wonderful trait - you're including us on how you;re rehaping your thoughts on this subject, in the very same way you include us on your (and Ollie, whether he like it or not ;-)) reshaping of your home. Thank you xxx
I appreciate your remarks concerning the George Floyd tragedy. Tell me more about the DENIM colored paint. Did you use a satin finish? The finish is lovely. Also exactly what materials did you use for the "paneling". I have been dreaming about doing a room in my house in a similar style and color. Thanks so much.
Sandi Toksvig. Box Tox June 12th . 'Whitewashed History ' on UA-cam. I listened today and was appalled at my ignorance, not re the unkindness to our fellow man ( which I know of full well )...but the courageous women and children that are ignored by history. Sandi does this great justice. 1000's of years worth of unkindness and we still have not matured into humanE Beings.... I love you more Laura for addressing this to your 40,000 subscribers. We need loving voices to be heard. 💝🥳💞 PS The nettie is lovely 😂😂 ( An old charming Geordie expression for the smallest room in the house). 🤭😁
Thank you Moira. I will listen to Sandi Toksvig's video you have mentioned in the morning. I absolutely adore the word nettie and will be using it from now on for our toilet room 😁
@@LauraMelhuishSprague The word ' Nettie'was allegedly brought back from the soldiers who were in Italy in the first world war... it hails from 'Gabinetto' meaning 'Toilet, lavatory'. It's not so much in use now but always causes a giggle re the local vernacular. 😁🤭. xxx
Hi Laura:) watching you for a long time now. We re renovating an old house in Ireland. What did you use for panelling? Is it MDF or plywood? And what size? I mean depth? What primer have you used.. Need to start the wood work shortly:)
Hi Anna, we used standard mdf as it’s a temporary bathroom. For a permeant room we’d go with moisture resistant mdf if it’s likely to get humid (bathroom). The back boards in here were all 3mm hardboard actually and then 6mm mdf for the raised sections. We made a start a while back on our hallway panelling and for that we used different thicknesses for the backs so that it all matched, ended up using both 9mm and 6mm. If you have good smooth walls you could use thinner. In the bathroom we used a basic wood/wall paint in white for primer but try and use a mdf primer for a really good finish. If you ever need really good paint advice you can give Holman paints a call. Hope that helps!

I’m happy you educated yourself on racial inequality. This is something that is black people deal with daily in schools , hospitals , interaction w police.
Many homes in the UK have toilet rooms that are very small and don't have a sink, especially if the house is a bit older. It's still nice to have it in a separate room, even if you need to wash your hands in the bathroom, because it just keeps the smells away from a room that you'd like to enjoy a bath in for example. Newer homes or extensions will make sure to have the toilet room large enough to also have a sink in it though.
Thank you 😊. No there isn't a sink in the toilet room, I would have loved one but it wasn't feasible for a temporary space which will only be used by guests. One day all the toilets in the house will have sinks in the same room 👍
@@LauraMelhuishSprague you could buy the sinks that go on the toilet tank , they are easy to install and its great since ur just recycling water from washing hands to flush later
The bathroom looks so good in that blue! How on earth did you match that colour so perfectly online? If I see a colour I like on Pinterest it most def is not what ill want in person if i try to colour match it lol! I wonder if there is another brand of skinny sink you guys could put in there...I know Ikea have those side ones that are narrow but I dont think thats your style!
I love that you actually acknowledged the blm movement but please read up on The Help. The experience of black maids in the 60s US is told from the perspective of a white woman and has many elements of the white savior trope.
Who knew you’d have trolls on your channel! 🤬 I found over years of DIY that I need to take regular breaks while I’m tearing down and rebuilding parts of my house otherwise accidents tend to happen when I get tired...it’s nice to get things done but at some point one can get rummy and then mistakes are made. Also drinking wine and hanging wallpaper do not go together. 😆
The blinds are very pretty. However, we have a child almost die from a cord on blinds getting wrapped around their neck. We had a super close call. Something to keep in mind.
Hi Rebecca, it’s the Titan nail gun from Screwfix. I think laura linked to it in a recent video ‘what we couldn’t be without’. There are two very similar I think we went for the slightly more expensive one as it can take 32mm nails (doesn’t mention this in the pack but works fine) 😄
One thing that I’ve learned through all of this is to research the statistics myself. You would be shocked to see the actual numbers . look up the FBI statistics for 2018 in the United States for race crimes and police involvement . it’s important you research the source.
I was just watching your video on your home update witch was great. Then you mentioned on the BLM to my surprise you said you were sending money to the USA to help witch was also good but what about what is happening on your door step. I am trying to understand if you think what is happening in the USA is not happening here every day. I have a suggestion if I may a book for you called Rough Crossings Britain, the slaves and the American Revolution. I hope this will help with your understanding
Thank you Jacqueline. Absolutely not, I am fully aware that the UK has similar issues around race as in the US. My parents educated me about Stephen Lawrence just as I have learnt about George Floyd. However the current Black Lives Matter movement has been most prominent in the US and in my adult life has been the only one to achieve critical mass. After watching 13th I decided to make a donation to Equal Justice Initiative. My reasoning for the donation was not in response to the current events (though they did prompt my learning) but more for the impact political and industry groups have had on the American justice system and some of the very inflammatory tactics used by even very recent (and current) presidents. I am still on the look out for more UK centric material that takes a similar look at our systems and racism in modern Britain.
I was personally happy to hear you talk about your self-education with antiracism. I think it's important for non-americans to realize that this is not just a US issue. I hope that you continue your own journey after it's no longer "trending" on social media. I know that I will. :)

I often get told I look like Kate and I take it as a huge compliment 😊 Thank you 💕
For sure
You don't put a drop cloth down and you never get paint on yourself. What's your secret? ❤💜👍
Haha 😂I am actually not sure, I guess I may be quite a controlled painter but I definitely get paint on myself!
I can’t WAIT for you to finish that hallway!!!
Every little helps, and that's true for our everyday lives; "..in all thy getting, get understanding🙏🏾🙏🏾
Hey Laura, thank you for using your platform to take a stand and educate people on the BLM movement.
One thing I've heard from the black community is that we shouldn't be encouraging movies with white savior narratives. One of those movies they gave as an example is the help.
Thanks Corinne, noted, I have taken it down from the suggestion 😊
So happy you uploaded!
Thanks for talking about BLM! We all have to keep using our voices for good!! 💕
😁🤭. xxx
You're doing such a good job! It's looking beautiful! ♥️
@@oliverwelch1672 .. Thx , that s a lot of info. Great job U re doing:) Fixing doer upper is not the easiest thing in the world. I have more private blog and in polish, but if you ever feel like you need a mental support and meet other people who decided for a crazy thing like this, feel free to have a look..anchorageblog.parts.com.pl/ Waiting for you next video!
I have had a lot of brass issues, too lately, it is quite annoing because the photos never turn out to be in the real tone... ooofff! ;-) I have been revovating for the last 3 months, too... So, I feel you! 🤗
Looks great.
Ahhh i love your videos! Can’t wait to watch✨💛
Glad you like them and hope you enjoy it 😁💕
I’m happy you educated yourself on racial inequality. This is something that is black people deal with daily in schools , hospitals , interaction w police.
Bello Laura,
I lobe watching York Videos, and i bought a Süd- Kistchen. Thank yuo for tis ideal.
And i wisch you a wonderful live in your News house.
I would love to see a current house tour to see a bit more what it is like living in a renovation 🤔
I've enjoyed watching your videos for a little while now but I'm so touched by this one! Thank you for addressing the BLM movement in your video.
I'm going to be so sad when this is finished 😥
Liked before watching xx
Viewer from the US here...why have a small room with just a toilet? And right next to a full bath? Is this common? Where do you wash your hands?
Where is your rug from that you currently have in the living room please? I love it!
Love your videos, may I ask what type of paneling you used? Is it mdf?
Beautiful job as always! Just curious, is there no sink going in the toilet room? Also, appreciated your comments on the movement going on right now.
Also a packet of baby wipes for hands would be effective if not near a sink ?
Not sure if i've missed something, but why are you only doing temporary renovations on your bathroom and toilet? x
like and comment before even watching your videos because they are just awsome!!
Thank you, appreciate your dedicated support 😊💕
The bathroom looks so good in that blue! How on earth did you match that colour so perfectly online? If I see a colour I like on Pinterest it most def is not what ill want in person if i try to colour match it lol! I wonder if there is another brand of skinny sink you guys could put in there...I know Ikea have those side ones that are narrow but I dont think thats your style!
I love that you still manage to look so stylish and put together even when you’re stripping wallpaper! 😊
i have to remove 26 year old wallpaper do you recommend a steamer or did you find something else that was easier?
I love that you actually acknowledged the blm movement but please read up on The Help. The experience of black maids in the 60s US is told from the perspective of a white woman and has many elements of the white savior trope.
Thank you for letting me know, I have deleted it from the recommendations ☺️
You could spray paint the lamps for upstairs using something like this: www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-7274830-Stops-Metallic-Antique/dp/B0009XB3HM
Who knew you’d have trolls on your channel! 🤬
I found over years of DIY that I need to take regular breaks while I’m tearing down and rebuilding parts of my house otherwise accidents tend to happen when I get tired...it’s nice to get things done but at some point one can get rummy and then mistakes are made. Also drinking wine and hanging wallpaper do not go together. 😆
The blinds are very pretty. However, we have a child almost die from a cord on blinds getting wrapped around their neck. We had a super close call. Something to keep in mind.
Can I as how tall is your panneling please ? I'm thinking to do panneling in the bathroom and I'd like the tall one x
Sorry about spelling mistakes was not wearing glasses
Which nail gun do you have? X
Uh you're back! 😍😍
this sounds insane but if you haven’t already got rid of/rehomed that plaque you took out of the toilet please may i buy it from you?
Love you
One thing that I’ve learned through all of this is to research the statistics myself. You would be shocked to see the actual numbers . look up the FBI statistics for 2018 in the United States for race crimes and police involvement . it’s important you research the source.
Did I miss the end result?
I am still on the look out for more UK centric material that takes a similar look at our systems and racism in modern Britain.
best video
BLM 👍🏻💖
I would of just paneled the hall. Heck with all that stripping. Ugh. Hate that job.
😂 so do I!
I like this idea 😄
