  • A "local song" for "local people"!!
Once the epicentre of Hulls' fishing industry, Hessle Road is where I started out as a singer with a band over thirty years ago, working at many of the areas' numerous pubs and clubs. I wish I had a pound for everytime we'd performed this in Rayners pub, where we had a lengthy residency.
The song was written, and originally recorded by Pete Smith, and takes an affectionate look back at one of Hulls' most well known districts.
The music in this version was created by me using my Yamaha PSR e413 keyboard.
    Lyrics:
    CHORUS:
Hessle Road, Hessle Road, I am proud of Hessle Road.
When folks ask where I come from, my head it is not bowed.
I say I come from good old Hessle Road.
I miss the bonfires in the street. I even miss the bullies,
Sat'day trips round Boyess and the prams outside of Woolie's.
I miss those bobbers' clogs at two, that very fishy smell,
Langham and Eureka, and Picky Park as well.
I miss those little gardens with sooty coloured roses,
Little kids with wellies on, with yellow snotty noses.
I miss those shotgun weddings, those little corner shops,
Playing football in the street and getting chased by cops.
I miss those brave young fisher kids, coming home to shore,
Spending all their money, then going back for more.
I even miss Criterion-a very quiet pub-
And a little lass from Subway Street our kid put in the club.
I miss Sat'days at the Boulevard. we always used to win,
With the Drake twins, Tommy Harris, Mick Scott and Tommy Finn,
Loose forward Johnny Whiteley-the finest in the land-
And the best-behaved supporters, we were there on Three-penny Stand.
There was Havelock and Gillett Street, West Dock and Boulevard.
They're pulling them all down now. It's hitting people hard.
They've left it all behind them, and on to Bransholme strode,
But I bet they don't forget the laughs, the tears on Hessle Road.
I remember what me dad said, when I was leaving home
To fend for meself and start a family of my own.
He said, "I brought you up, son, but nowt to me is owed.
Just remember where you come from. You're a kid from Hessle Road."

My Father was from Hessle Road and all my family came from Hull,
I have not been back for years, indeed the Hull I know, is the Hull from the 1960s and 70s.
It breaks my heart when I hear of the problems in Hull now, but no matter were I go, I'll always be a child from 'Ull

I love this song and the pictures, I lived on Constable Street until 1954. Now I live in Arizona , but I will always be a Hullean. I will never forget the smell off the fish docks in the Summer and going into Boyes to shop, or dancing at the Fishermans Bethel on Saturday nights, I had my first Shandy, at the Criterion, fish and chips on the way home from the Langham, and my sister was married at St Barnabus Church at the corner of the Boulevarde and Hessle Road.

Your Dad was a great man who made a lot of people very happy with his songs. Played his record at my 21st in 1977 and it brought the house down. Hats off to him!

I drive up to hessle road twice a week from wales in a artic wagon. I like the place, I often go for a walk and talk to local people. Nice people, the locals, not sure about the Eastern Europeans though.

So good to hear this. Alas I am too young to remember Hessle Road in its prime but brought back fond memories of my Grandparents particularly in the early 1970's. Coming vividly into my mind is Cotton's corner shop on Albermarle Street, Boulevard. Thank you.

Yes, Little Lass From Eastbourne Street was the original B-side, also written by Pete Smith. Again three chords but a sad country-style ballad in three-time. Wonderful.

Actually Pete Smith was the only writer of this song he was my father and I remember every word he wrote and had to listen to it many times before he perfected it!!!

I am a Hessle Roader, William Street was the last address before being evacuated, other streets, Waverly, Alfred, Villa Place, Bean St, going to school down Vauxhall Grove, the block of flats I knew as Porter street flats, the one that seems to stand out most, I think it was Ropery st, because most times we would head for there when the Air raid sirens went off because we went down into what must have been a beer cellar, a big arched place painted white, and if we had time we took drinks sandwiches blankets and maybe a pillow, always came out hoping our house was still there.

Thanks for your comment. I know there is a verse missed out, (the one with references to Eton and Harrow). This was done for reasons of timing. The lyric was transcribed from a very scratchy original EP, so I might have misheard something. I would appreciate it if you could let me know of any errors.
    Thanks again - Dave

Dave Williams as I read your comment I suddenly thought'yes you are right, there is a verse missing (not talking about the original, don't even think I heard the original) something along the lines of 'i remember working on a ship serving cocktails and eating fancy nosh, one bloke said I'm from eaton and i said well I'm blowed I'm from harrow that's a street on hessle rd..'

Beg your pardon isabobbles. Yes your father is the only writer of this song. My mistake. My father was part of the original, also helping your dad to perfect it. (hence only one name to the writer.- Pete Smith)
My dad corrected me on my mistake. Also told me many a story of their gigs and how much of a fab guy your father was. ;)
