Thanks for the video. I have a S63 in the middle of valve stem seal replacement. Engine in car, valve covers off, started to set time for cam removal with AGA tools. Rotating clockwise a bit reached a hard stop, short of reaching MP. Engine would rotate back a little, then stop when going forward at same place. Saw in TIS that it is OK to back rotate as long as chains were tensioned. Still had tensioners in place, so spun the engine nearly a full revolution backwards and achieved MP mark for crankshaft and all four cams are dead on with timing check plate. Interestingly, with timing tools removed, the engine will only turn a little forward and little backwards. Feels like a hard stop in both direction now. Ever seen something like this?
Yep. They are almost the same engines overall. Exhaust is very different and few differences on the cylinders, rods sizes. But the chain timing the same.
So at 150 degrees before tdc (cylinder 1)seems that no pistons are at top dead center . Therefore you can rotate the cams 360 degrees without contacting the pistons..
hi Stanislav! very good video! really detailed and instructive. im about to do the same with my N63 5.0i. if you have more videos on the n63 it would help! 👍👍
Sure. I will publish very, very important video about one flaw of BMW engines that is killing engines (especially n63). Probably in a week or two. Don't have time at all. And the solution how to fix it.
@@waspsps sure no problem thanks! my bearing shells got destroyed and that destroyed my crankshaft. so I decided to buy either a new engine block or a complete short block. im in Paris. France the complete block is 20k here, its bit excessive so I think best solution is to buy an engine block and reassemble. what do you think?
@@niwayansuarmini8305 , wow! 20k is a lot! I did both - rebuild an engine and bought a new one. The rebuild - was about $3k in parts! You probably need to grind the crankshaft - and it's pretty expensive since they need to harden it. If you can get cheap parts and good mechanic to rebuild it - go for it. But try BMW dealership to get a new motor. You will be surprised but it might be worth it! Don't buy a used motor - it won't last long.
Since you are already at the point of rebuilding. Change the thermostat to 90 degree one. That's the video I'm about to make. BMW made those engines run on 105 degrees! It's crazy!!! That kills all gaskets and pretty much everything.
@@waspsps fixing the crankshaft is abit risky I think. BMW ECU is really picky, im a bit afraid. I think my option will be to rebuild with a new engine block. Here in Paris the engine block is 5K. you are actually right I was thinking of solutions to keep my engine cool, because 105 is too hot, mine could go up to 115 when speeding on low gear. where can I find the 90 degree thermostat ?
This timing guide apply to the N63 twin turbo? Also having intake Vanos and crankshaft code. Any ideas where can I start checking to get rid of those code. Vanos solenoid were remove and clean
Hi. You are correct, my engine was n63 twin turbo. The timing is very straight forward. You either put it right, or completely wrong. So, to have few degrees off - it's not the case with timing. It could very likely be reason of dirty vanos solenoids. I had this issue when some dirt from oil (from the first start of the engine there were somehow lots of dirt) got stuck on the vanos mesh/metal net. If you are getting codes of early /late timing - I think it's either vanos (4 of them need to be checked) or loose chain.
Do you have any videos on replacing the oil pump chain on tu?.. I have a n63tu engine with a broken chain and trying to figure out what would be the best easiest way to fix
*l have a 2008 BMW X6 and the engine is missing timing What was happening What happened is I was driving it then it just simply stopped and now the car won't start I took it in the BMW and they're telling me I need to replace the entire engine Even though I just replaced the engine under warranty about 50,000 mi ago Is this a problem that can be fixed??*
On this motor the exhaust is on the inside because the turbos sit in the middle of the engine this is called a hot vee design. The intake manifolds are on the outside of the head.
The problem with this engine the cylinder wall get scratched then sound comes when it’s hot. I have now 3 engine with low mileage 20.000km only cylinder 8 scratched . Maybe I repair them or sell them
I bought a crankshaft with new bearings but cannot get it to start constant timing codes for all 4 cams. Timing is set and have re checked several times. Is it possible i have the wrong crankshaft? Any suggestions? Thank you
I would HIGHLY recommend to check and very likely to clean from any debris all 4 vanos Solenoids! I had similar issue with wrong timing after my first rebuild and the VANOS got all dirty.
@@waspsps thank you for the reply. Would that cause it to not even try to start ever? I tried staryed fluid once and it fired but not on its own. It ran fine before I rebuilt it besides the knocking.
@@jasonwhite8145 I'd try it first. And also, I'd try all the knock sensors. I thinks it's 4 sensors on the top (2 for each head) and 1 on the side of the engine somewhere in the middle.
Sounds good. I will take a look at them. Just so weird that it was running fine before and now wont even try to start, low side fuel pressure around 70 and high is 1600 so its computer related.
Bro, the correct timing is already done on the new engine you got or you had to do this on the new engine? I don't think my mechanic did this to my new engine 😖🤦♂️
Hi! Yes, you are absolutely right about the new engine. It's complete. So, surely, on the new engine, I didn't do it. BUT! When I was rebuilding my old engine, I realized how hard it is to find detailed instruction on how to do the timing. Especially how to put properly the camshafts. So, I made this video for people who are working on the old engines. Thank you though!
@@bmw2487 I see. If you would be in Sac area, I would help you as much as I could for free. I was unable to buy a car from the auction back then and just stopped that project. If you decide you need an engine - you can come here and I'll sell you for the same price I got. I'm in Citrus Heights to be exact, so you can see if it's doable - drive back and forth. Probably like 12 - 14 hours.
You did not use the tensioning tool.
10:38. You had to press the alignment tool to tell yourself timing is set. It is not.
Your timing is off.
Great video. Thanks ! Don't forget New sprocket bolts from BMW. They stretch...

Solved??
Aren’t you suppose to apply tension to the chain before you tighten the cam bolts? Because the tensioner will still have slight slack in it
exactly, pretty misleading.
Very thorough, thanks for that!
Perfect video thanks . 👍
Thank You Master!!! loved your video so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the future please do the same process on the N63TU.

Really appreciate you making this video mate 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Where did you find this timing too???. 😊

Thansk for the Info, I got S63 Engine would be the same tool and same way to do ?
Yep. They are almost the same engines overall. Exhaust is very different and few differences on the cylinders, rods sizes. But the chain timing the same.
SO 150 DEGREES BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTEr THE CRANKSHAFT ENSURES ALL 8 CYLINDERS ARE FAR FROM Tdc, no valve interference?
If you take a look at the pictures, you will see that there is one and only one way to do timing with this tool.
So at 150 degrees before tdc (cylinder 1)seems that no pistons are at top dead center . Therefore you can rotate the cams 360 degrees without contacting the pistons..
Does cam phaser need to be replaced if timing went retarted or just remove bolt plus lock tite or replace
