Hi Corey. Just got my slider and I think your description of the "Time-lapse" setting is not quite right. You say it is the time between shutter actuations. It actually is the time delay between when the movement stops, and the shutter is actuated. That's why the Stop time has to be longer than it. Think of it as the "Shutter Delay" that allows any vibration caused by the motion to settle out. So if you have interval set to 5, Time-lapse set to 1 and Stop time set to 2, the full cycle time will be 7 seconds. So the time between shutter actuation is 7 seconds, not the 1 second set for the "Time-lapse" setting. A complete cycle would be: a) Move for 5 seconds at whatever speed is set, b) Delay for 1 second, c) actuate the shutter, d) wait for 1 more second to provide the 2 second stop time. Then the cycle starts again.
I tested and you are right.
I’m hopes that this is seen, lol, I’m trying to wrap my head around these strange “values”…. To that end, I’m trying to work out what the values should be set at to do a night-lapse with a 25 second shutter time.

Thanks for the informative video. My 48" GVM slider arrived today and I'm (excitedly) learning how to use it. Thanks for making the video and the graphing method for slider travel time and distance and the intervalometer calculator website is useful.
I've also been puzzling on the timelapse menu meanings and might have come to a different understanding or way to explain: "interval" is motor run time (and as you said, how far it travels in that duration based on motor percent speed), "time-lapse" is time after motor movement until exposure, and "stop time" is interval between slider movements. I think this is a case of unclear translation but useful feature-wise if you think of being able to coordinate exposures and slider movements so vibrations caused by the motor could have time to settle before camera exposure... and if it is a long shutter as in a night exposure, that's great.
Example: I set my "time-lapse" to 4 seconds and my stop time to 8: hit "center" and "right" buttons. It first moved the slider right, waited four seconds and made an exposure, waited another four seconds and moved the slider and so on. If you had a six second shutter speed, you might time it out so the rig has three seconds to settle before exposure and a second or two after that for margin, move, settle, expose...

Thanks for the info! My slider is busy moving at 1% with 0.1s movement as I type this. I hope to be able to get out and make some nice time lapses when I can walk again. For now I'll practice with my front window and some plants.
Amazing Video! I wonder why you have that little Subscribers. Judging by your Video Quality you could easily be a UA-camr with 1.000.000 Subs (seriously). So keep up your great work and I´m sure you will grow very, very fast. Unfortunately I don´t have a motorised slider, because they are too expensive for me, but I am sure there are enough videographers out there, that have trouble using there gear.

I appreciate your time and effort on this. I went through and did the same thing (testing number of shots at 100% and 1%) and got some pretty different numbers. So I would suggest to others to use your graph as just a guestimate, but to actually test their own to get accurate numbers for their individual slider. I got 115 at 100% and 1247 at 1% with the same starting and end points. That still puts me at between 79 and 80% for 360 photos... so still pretty close to yours. I'd just round down and get a few extra photos to be on the safe side to meet the duration I'm looking for. I'm gonna throw that spreadsheet on my phone with a little algorithm to where I can input desired photo numbers and it will spit out a rounded down speed %. So if I needed 576 25-second exposures with a stop time of 30 seconds to get a 20-second clip at 24fps (over a 4-hour duration)... I would enter the 576 into my form and since it falls between 60 at 575 and 59 at 587... I would round down to 59 just to be on the safe side and get those extra images to make clip link.

Ok so I have an update: I bought this slider on Aug. 29th, 2018 and they've updated the software a little bit. Inside the time-lapse function, they've removed the "Time-Lapse" variable from the list and added "Speed" at the top. So the list now reads: Speed, Interval, Stop Time, Photo, and Auto Loop. "Stop Time" reads in seconds, and now seemingly the trigger fires in the middle of whatever your stop time is. I just did a time-lapse with a 6sec stop time...so the tray moved, waited 3 seconds, fired the shutter, then waited 3 seconds...then moved to the next position. So if you're doing a long shutter speed night time-lapse, give the "Stop Time" at least double your shutter speed seconds plus a couple seconds for buffer.
@@formaset I just bought one of these and apparently it didn't come with the new firmware either. Even the photos on Amazon show a somewhat different UI. Better, who knows, since this is a terribly UI it can't get much worse.
What is your version number? I just bought mine and it says version 1.1.
Replying to my own comment. I contacted the manufacturer who said they would send me an updated controller (they cannot be flashed with new firmware). They sent me a new controller, but it is also version 1.1. I contacted them again and, "We don't have any updated controllers in the warehouse at the moment." No telling if I'll ever get an upgraded one.

By the way, very nice voice ;-) By the way, i would have illuminate the other side of your face as your small decoration back light is on the left of the screen. It would give the impression that this light illuminates your face. Just a simple tip generally used on interviews. Best !

Thanks for the video! Have a couple of questions though... 1. Say you through a camera on there which doesn't give you the option of a shutter release (Canon M50 for example) - Can you still make it work for timelapse? and 2. It's been over a year now with the slider, how has it held up over the months now and do you have any updates?
Zach R hey Zach, time lapse wouldn’t fully work properly without a shutter release. I guess you could theoretically do some math and figure out a way to start them both at the same time on the camera and the slider independently so that the line up with movement. A year later I still love it and use it. Just used it on a shoot yesterday. I did end up ordering a rhino arc ii because that motorized head and face tracking just looked too good to be true.

Hi Corey... very good job... this is the only instructive video on timelapse settings for this slider I have found... Let me ask you something... I am about to buy a slider and I have these three options:
1) GVM like the one you own
2) Ashanks S2
3) Ashanks Smooth ONE PLUS (bluetooth version)
It seems the bluetooth version is more easy to set up for timelapses and I supose that the motor is much quiet for video apart from these you have a couple of thumbscrews for easy remove the motor and is cheaper, but I didnt find much information... so I am in doubt to buy it... Do you know something about ashanks models? what do you think? thankyou...!!!
Hey there! I’m not too familiar with the Ashanks models of sliders. I’ll have to check those out. Sounds like they have some great options! The motor is extremely quiet on this model. You might notice a slight, high end electrical sound when it’s running. I’ve never had that audio pick up in a shot though. And a removable motor sounds like a huge plus! Even with the remote turned off, this model doesn’t slide completely smooth manually. It’s meant to be operated by the remote. Smooth as butter.

@@coreyrobn Hi Corey, just picked one of these up. Literally waiting for my battery to charge. Just to say, this can be operated manually without the motor. You have to flip it over and undo the clasps holding the belt. Pull the belt out and voila. Sounds like a bit of a faff but takes about 2 minutes. Very easy to rethread the belt.

Loool! (Ok, i know the 2 "o" make no sense! But i had to express how ridiculouse this menue is made!) How long it took me to get into the submenu from the timelapse to adjust the Timelapse speed, after 1:31 when i knew it had to be somewhere! 🤯
How do you set this slider up for longer exposures? 15s, 20s, 30s? To what do you set the “Time Lapse” and “Stop Time” settings in order to accommodate both the exposure and the card write time?

Does the GVM controller just trigger the camera to take pictures for the timelapse automatically? I have a GVM 80QD and the controller wont trigger my camera at all. I have a Canon 90D. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Hello, you said "time lapse" (shooting interval) is measured in seconds, which means it only goes up to 999 seconds (16 min), am I correct? If I have a 60 day time lapse project that shoots 1 frame per hour, it doesn't seem like this unit is capable of handling this job? Please explain. (I've never used this before). Thank you.

To find the different in speed between the 31” and 48” couldn’t you just multiply the number of photos by 1.54? That would account for the extra 17” assuming all other settings are the same. Just got mine last night and that’s what I’m trying to figure out

This is a very informative video...so thanks. I have one small question though. I have an intervelometer, would that be easier to use than the "time lapse" of the GVM? I'm very familiar with the intervelometer and know how to work one (correctly). Thanks.
Terry Long glad you liked the video! You could use an external intervalometer if you didn’t want to incorporate motion into your time lapse, because on the slowest speed setting for the slider, your time lapse would only be able to record about a minute or so of photos- if that. The built in intervalometer on the GVM allows it to take a photo, then wait for a few seconds (or minutes) before slightly moving again horizontally on the slider.

Have you compared the 48" to the 32"? Curious about the shake or sag at the end of the track with a DSLR on board... great channel!
JWK DESIGN thanks man! I haven’t gone longer than the 32” - Although I get some pretty noticeable sag with the 32” if I center-mount the slider. To combat it, I almost always use two stands (one on each end) and that fixes it.
Hi Corey. Great video! How would you shoot a long exposure time lapse? let’s say 10 second exposure. I tried myself but it moves during the exposure ruining the time lapse
Here is how I set for my 15s timelapse
Speed=80%
Interval=0.1
Time-Lapse=3.0
Stop Time=21 (must set this at least 1 or 2 second more, 15s + Timelapse 3s = 18s will not work, it will skip a frame)
Photo=300

Hey Corey, I have a GH4 but I seem to have problems getting my camera to communicate with the remote for the shoot-move time lapse feature. Did you encounter similar problems? I'm not sure if there is any settings I need to tweak in the GH4 for it to work
I'm confused about the shutter speed - or how long the shutter remains open for exposure. Which of these controls that if any? Do I have to be in "bulb" for this to work, or can i just set shutter speed in-camera? Thanks!
Yeah you’ll just set the shutter speed in Camera. The slider remote doesn’t have control over shutter speed.

YMG Video thanks man! I shot it on a Fuji X-H1. Not too familiar with the remote input settings on the GH5. I know on the X-H1 there’s a dedicated video mode that would also trigger video through the input but if you put it in camera mode, it uses the remote input to trigger the shutter instead of video. Hope that helps!

The Gh5 has a dedicated timelapse mode wich im using right now for the timings, but if i set the camera on full manual (photo) mode it still triggers the video (for the amount of “timelapse”) very weird. In video mode it obviously triggers the video. Hmm , you are using the photo mode right? Manual?

the 'time lapse' is misleading, its incorrect!!
What a awful UI for Timelapse Photography... Maybe this UI would make sens if the Tracklength is infinite. But as long as the Tracklength is finite, the resulting numbers of pictures u can take from left to right is dictated buy the Speed and time in wich it moves aka interval. Also, wich TL Photographer cares about the speed of the Camera between the Shoots?! The movement of the camera should happen in the least amount of time, full stop.
My idea for a way better UI: Delete Interval and Speed in TL Mode. Because the length of the Track is finite and given, the Speed and Interval can be calculated internaly from the number of Photos taken and that's all that matters. Only the Time between the Stops is left aka the new Interval time. With this u only have to dial in the number of Photos and the Interval time, done. The rest is done on the camera and ofc the exposure time has to be shorter then the interval time, but when u are shooting TL u already knew this.
