Great. The tighter the shot, the slower the movements. Got it!
It is using a stepper motor. So you don't have to worry about any gears being damaged that much if its even using a gearbox to begin with. The horrific noise that ensues is the stepper motor loosing steps but that is only magnetic "friction" so nothing is being damaged there. Hearing the stepper "chonk chonk chonk" means it doesn't have enough torque to continue rotating so any possible gearbox in the product is likely to not get damaged much or at all :)
Well that's a relief!
I've been looking for a cheaper motorized slider and I think you found it. Thanks for the great review!
Undecided with Matt Ferrell don’t buy it like I did if you want it to go A-B-A-B and do parallax
Will be doing both still and video time lapse panoramas of Wyoming landscapes. Very clear, informative information in this video, appreciate that! Have subscribed!
I am looking for a slider to add some video interest to my Micro Four Thirds camera/ lens/ photo instruction channel. Being a lifelong professional stills photographer, my video skills leave something to be desired so the possibilities and uses were not totally clear to me. I was also unclear as to what price I should pay, not needing a full-blown professional item but not a cheapie either.
Funnily enough, I was planning to get the Flextilt head too - and see that you find it as useful as I hope to. Two birds with one stone, there. Since I make videos of a similar nature to yours, I also appreciate just how much work and thought has gone in to this review. Your excellent video has not only answered all my questions but provided a bit of a 'how to' - so thank you!
Thanks David! I'll check out your channel I'm sure I've a lot to learn from you!
David Thorpe nice to run in to you!
DOD Media David has some amazingly informative videos for sure!
subscribed! I love how you make your tutorials. Very informative, simple, and the cool left side menu!
Keep posting....
im learning a lot from you.
I was all about picking up a Rhino slider. Thankfully, due to UA-cam tracking my viewing history, your video came up.
OUTSTANDING video tutorial, Thank you so much! I'm using it for Music Videos and Interviews. You're very, very good at splaing stuff!!!
Thanks for this review. I'm also looking for a Rhino replacement. GVM has the right pricing, for sure...so I'm willing to overlook the less-than-great interface and other minor issues.
Hello, I really appreciate your review of this slider !!
I just bought it yesterday and your video is a great help !
Thanks a lot !!
Glad you liked it!
Hi, great detailed review with lots of information. I watched your review a number of times to follow the details and your points. I will decide soon if this is the slider for me. Right now, based onyour review, this is the slider I have been waitng for. It has so many features that appeal to what I want to do with "time-lapse". I appreciate your hard work and great information. Good Job!
I've watched this video three times and found it very informative. Thanks. I just purchased it from Amazon via your link. My plans are to use it for video/tutorials in making landscape/scenic/natural history photographs on a local Facebook page for those interested in photography but have little to no knowledge of how to achieve award winning images.
You did a great job, I have been looking at several. I am an artist, I will use it many ways enhancing parallax, astro, films, lots of things.
Thank you So much for this! I just got mine delivered today.
thankyou from the bottom of my heart for not saying smooth as butter, stick with eggs matey, set yourself apart from the crowd! :)
🤣🤣
Very good review. I think that is the slider for me! Thanks!
Brilliant review, looks like the right investment at a reasonable price point for documentary needs. Thanks much for the insight.
Such a great review. Thank you so much!
the uk link is showing a different slider...
The thing that nearly every reviewer forgets is to describe or demonstrate the torque of the slider for doing slides on a gradient. Could this cope with a vertical slide motion?
I was just looking at this on Amazon before I came here and it says it can carry a DSLR up a 70 deg. slope
Perfect video . Making me want to purchase it
Been thinking about this one after the Neewer version was trash for my liking. The motor made such a high pitch freq that it was useless for interviews. This motor is not as loud but it's still audible. The one thing u get with Rhino and edelkrone is 100% silent motors. I'm really hesitant about this GVM.
See my note about where the mic was placed! You'd never have a shotgun mic pointing straight at a slider in real application. I made a follow up video a couple of months ago about how quiet this was you should check it out 👍
@@dodmedia just watched it. Thanks for the follow up review. It's definitely audible, but nothing that would interfere with vocal audio especially when noise removal is added. I like it. Was considering a used Rhino slider for about the same amount, but you have shed some light upon me with this review. Thank you.
the price is awesome, I didn't hear you mention anything about the sound I am not sure what microphone you were using but the motor from the slider was pretty audible. I'm thinking that this slider would be awesome for time lapse and dynamic b-roll shots but I'm wondering how well it would do for interviews considering that I can hear the motor in your review.
No you can only hear the motor because I had my shotgun mic pointing straight at it. I use this in interviews just fine it's super quiet.
awesome review... i just got the 48'' thank you bro. much love from Brains Concept Studios - USA
The average speed of an object in an interval of time is the distance travelled by the object divided by the duration of the interval; the instantaneous speed is the limit of the average speed as the duration of the time interval approaches zero.
SI unit: m/s, m s−1
There. now we all understand. Well I don't so perhaps someone else can explain it?
I have this for shooting full spectrum panoramic landscapes - awesome stuff
Just looked on amazon UK and it is available. £319.
Thanks for a detailed video. Watched it a few times before I placed my order. Look forward to using the 48'' for interviews and time-lapse vids. There are a couple brands that look identical. Maybe knock offs (Andoer on Amazon.ca) or just rebranded. Did not want to tank any chances. Hope it comes soon.
Cheers
Sweet! Let me know what you think of the 48" version! I thought it would be way too long for me.
Will do.Got the 48 just so it looks like a beast in front of my clients :)
DOD Media
LOL
Amazing review, I was looking for something like this.
Glad I could help
I couldn’t find the same as your ! All GVM i found is have the belt on the motor ! Is it similar to this ? I searched both amazon ebay and B&H photo but they all come out not the same as your ! Please help !
Subed. Great review - well structured, clean audio, didn't mind 20 min long. Keep them coming!
Q. What's the maximum weight that can go on to the slider..?
Thanks!! :-) Their site says it can take 11lbs. I've had no problem with the a7iii and cage, holding a monitor and a heavy sigma lens on it.
Thanks for the review! Can you extend the rails? Is there an option to buy longer and replace them if needed? Thanks again :)
I'm curious about if make it longer (like 6 feet) if the motor could still be programed for those distances? also wondering if I could hang it up side down with something light like a go-pro?
The motor should be able to travel longer distances, I can't imagine the set a limit on the number of revs the motor can do. Hanging upside down with a GoPro should be fine as they're very light. I'd be very curious to see it if you make something like this!
Sunsets and waves
Been doing a lot of timelapses of Autumn sunsets the last week and it's been amazing to have this!
Are you as happy with the slider now as you were when you made the video? Great review thank you.
Yeah still ticks all the boxes for my needs
Great Video, man. Thank you.
your parallax slide at 13:35 ... does that go back and forth automatically for interviews? Id love this as a second shooter but the rhino version with motor and paralax feature is like $1500
Yeah that's the point 👍
Great review mate.
thank you awesome! can you use it without motor? is there a flywheel or something similair?
Hi, thanx for the review. I have a pretty identical slider from Neewer, except it has a DC motor and therefore the controller doesn't allow to set start and end points. Is the connector on the controller and on the motor itself a 3 pin one? That would tell me it's a stepped motor, and I would try then asking GVM if they sell it as a replacement part and try to swap it on mine so that I can have more precision and repeatability in the shots.
Cheers!
It is a 3 pin yeah. I'd be surprised if they do sell the individual parts though.
@@dodmedia Hey, thanx for the super quick reply! I've tried asking for a replacement part...let's see what they say...
Great review, man!
Amazing tip! Thanks!
We have a huge shoot coming up. Do we are grabbing one of these. I'm a FTF member and I will NOT be buying a Rhino after watching this. Cheers. May the focus be with you.
Are you able to do a tutorials on how to track a person? I’ve got the 48 version, and the person never stays center when I got from one side to the other. Even like ways to position it for the best results.
Sure!
How much can tis hold? I'd like to put a Ronin S on it. I get it seems weird to put a gimbal on a slider, but it also have programmable movement, and it would be cool to combine the two
Thinking the same...

would you still recommend this slider this 2020? :)
Great video! How loud would you say it is? I'm thinking about using it for a low budget film but worried you would heard it.
No it's loud in this because the shotgun mic is pointing straight at it. It's silent when I use it in interviews
You can get it cheaper on amazon...mine was around $250 with all your accessories included but different branding...plus mine is auto return even if you don't set it as soon as it got to end it stops or auto rotate.
Thank you!
How easy is it to keep a person at the same spot in frame while sliding and panning in auto loop (for interview).
Very easy. You set your framing in the centre of the slider, and then slide to one end. Adjust the rotation so they are once again in the same place in your frame, and make sure that rotation is locked off at the same distance on both ends of the pan rod, and you're set. There will be about an inch of movement where the panning mechanism doesn't kick in and then as it's sliding it will pan automatically, keeping your subject framed as you wanted. It's awesome :-)
@@dodmedia nice.. thank you!
Great review
its very yousefull bro I bought it the product is awesome
yeah timkelapse is not so straightforward, not set rules for it, you have to also take into account buffer time if you are shooting large raw photos.
Interesting review of an Interesting slider, thanks for that . Which camera brands are supported except Sony and Canon? Would be Interesting.
It's less about camera brands being supported, as opposed to individual cameras. Essentially anything that can handle a shutter release cable can work on this, since all the controller is doing is sending an electronic signal to make the camera shutter fire. And it came with a dozen cables for all different brands and models.
Most of which I've no clue what camera they're designed for! ;-)
Thanks!
I love your videos
Vert interesting product. Thinking seriously about this .
How do you fit two tripods/stands either end.
Cool! So to fit tripods either side, there are 1/4" threads on the side and bottom of each end. What I have tried which worked pretty well was to put the slider on a tripod using the centre mount, then adding a long friction arm which goes from one side of the slider down to one of the tripod legs. That keeps it nice and stable despite it being mounted centrally.
Thats a good idea. I have seen some makes with dedicated arms going from tripod to slider. Which arm did you use.
Has anyone tried mounting on one tripod (in the center) then putting monopods under each end to have a smaller footprint than using two tripods?
No but that's a great idea! I've had it on light stands and it works great but as you say that's quite a footprint if you're out and about. I've also see systems that clamp one or both sides of the slider to the tripod legs so the weight shift disappears
Great review and it looks like an awesome product for that price... unfortunately, in Australia, Amazon are charging nearly $1400 for the same kit.. Australia gets slugged again.. :(
Got any mates flying over soon? 😜
@@dodmedia Unfortunately, no :(
Hey I ordered one but I'm getting a lot of vibration. Do you have any idea what could be causing this?
Either the locking knob is not fully unlocked, or your camera isn't positioned with its centre of weight in the middle of the caddy? Only two things I can think of that could cause vibrations.
@@dodmedia na the motor just vibrates and causes micro Jitters. I spoke to gvmled and they sent me another one which does the same thing. I have to run it at 50% speed is the only way I can get it to not vibrate so much. Was using it on 90
Can I use this slider with an iPhone?
Sure, if you have a phone holder clip to screw onto the mount! You can't control it with an iPhone though if that's what you meant.
Incredible tutorial and review. Bought one! Subbed!
very cool
What is the best speed percentage for interviews/ tracking some?
I find for interviews I never go above 70%
wow!!! 3/4 inch adapter????
3/8 *
does the software support fuji x series?
There's no software. the controller just sends an electronic trigger to the camera via the release cable, and that triggers the camera.
I like the way I'm expecting bad news at 12:50 and you hit me with good news 😂. Have been considering this slider for a while. I'm still on the fence but getting closer to a decision thanks to this video.
me too! :)
Umm this absolutely produced jitters using our blackmagic pocket camera 😒
Although the review is too long, but i found myself watching it all.. and i felt that I have to thank you for this amazing detailed useful review
*How do you feel about reviews that are this thorough? Is 20 mins overkill?!*
In case you want to skip ahead, I've put the chapters of the review on the screen, Kraig Adams style :-)
DOD Media I prefer the level of detail you went into here. No complaints from me. FYI: just bought one through your affiliate link!
Awesome!! Send me some of your shots when you have it set up, I'll feature them on here!
DOD Media I’ve been playing around with the slider for the past couple of weeks and am really loving it. Thanks so much again for the review and recommendation! I’m still getting accustomed to it, but I’ve got a few slider examples in this video. The first happens within the first 15 seconds of the video (goofy special effects shot). ua-cam.com/video/j7LtVz8Ai04/v-deo.html. There are a few more slider shots throughout the review too.
I loved how you had the outline showing when you would be covering the different topics you did. That was really handy!
All good, I prefer long videos with a lot of attention to details.
Brilliant Review, thanks for creating this video. I’ve just purchased this slider and waiting for it to arrive. Cheers from Western Australia
This is a brilliant review. Anytime you have a long review by putting time stamps as you did it will allow people to jump from one place to another so even if you made it an hour long i'd be fine with it. Ok maybe not an hour... lol thanks :-)
Best review I've seen of this slider. Liked/Subbed, and purchased through your link!
Sweet! I'm still loving using it
It's an amazing slider. I use it with my B-cam for interview setups, adds tons of production value. The issue with it is the size - it needs a tripod on both ends, so setting it up isn't quick and you cant move it around to capture different shots. I bought an edelkrone SliderONE + a couple of HeadONE's for that type of stuff, which is also an awesome system, but the GVM is my go to for interviews.
Andoer branded slider has same model number (gp-80QD), identical features, same accessories. I watched your video, then about 15 other GVM videos and bought the Andoer. Ready? $276 shipped by AliExpress from China to US. Sure, it will take a little longer to get here but I’m the only non Amazon Prime person on the planet anyway. Score! Thanks for the review.
It is Andoer slider, it's just GVM branded. :)
Andoer seems to be same slider but different motor so can't guarantee it would be as smooth or silent.
Hi, do you still have the Andoer slider? How is it? Thanks!
The motor skipping is not actually grinding any gears, most stepper motors don't have any gears. It is just the motor losing steps.
After about a year now how did this slider end up working for you? I was looking into buying this for car videos I make to get nice smooth stationary shots when I'm not using a gimble. I was also curious if this comes with a phone mount or do I have to purchase that separately?
Same questions. Following up.
Hey Justin and Tethe, this slider still works really well and I would still highly recommend it. It didn't come with a phone mount but then this was the first version and there have been a couple of updates to it since my review, so it might be that it includes a phone mount now. If not, you can get one online for 5 bucks...
DOD Media thanks!
Truly appreciate this.
About to but my first slider and didn’t want to waste my money but at the same time don’t want to invest a lot of money.
I read a few reviews about the noise of the motor and the fact that you have to set end and starting points at every use, is that a problem for you? Also if I don’t have the eldelkrone, would you recommend other mount? I am looking the slider for time lapses and interviews
Anyone commenting on the noise is full of crap 🤣 I made a follow up video a few months back where I showcase the noise of the slider in an interview setup. Check that out if you're worried at all about noise. It should clear those worries right up.
As for setting start and end at each power up, I've not come across a motorized slider that doesn't need to do that, even the Rhino Arc II needs to calibrate each time so it knows for sure where it is along the tracks. It takes 20 seconds tops. Not a big deal at all in my opinion
DOD Media thanks. Any suggestions other than the edelkrone?
I would use it for interviews and to get some really sick B-Roll, time lapse, now that I have seen this video I will def be getting one, the slider I have sucks..simple as that.
I was really thinking about a cheap manual slider but I think I'm going to go for this one. So much more can be done with this rather than a manual one. Plus it's still nowhere near the price of Rhino or Kessler. Don't get me wrong, Kessler is awesome as it should be for what you're spending but like you I just can't spend that much on a slider to use 4 times a year.
Awesome Review, and love that you were honest about the affiliate link. If I buy it'll be through your link.
Thanks Drew!
Same here thinking of getting one.
Thanks! Did you use it for stop-motion? How does it perform?
This review was long and time consuming...and I enjoyed EVERY minute of it! Great job, this should be an official promo vid for GVM...I’m buying one! Thanks!
Hey that's such a helpful video - THANKS :) I have a quick question - Im not sure about how I could position the direction of my camera on the start and the end point?
Why dont you compare this GVM SLIDER ELDEKRONE HEAD PAN TILT PRO AND SLIDER2 PRO Sso that we see the pros n cons
I guess because I don't own the slider 2 pro so don't really know what I'd say about it 🤷♂️
Not watched it all yet, but $369 is a banging price for a full motorized set up!
thank you so much....ordering one thanks to your video once they're in stock :) GVM GP-120QD
How is the "Tracking shooting" on this model? I am sending back a Neewer version as the centred subject ends up completely off screen when you adjust the centre bar (And no, I'm not adjusting it in the wrong direction). On your footage it doesnt look like the subject/you stay all THAT centred, but it looks better than on my Neewer.
Nice review David. Did you notice any play on the "turntable" (where the camera is mounted). I've read a review on a similar slider and it exhibited some play, especially on focus tracking shot so it's not repeatable. How about micro-jitters? Thanks!
I'm also interested in this. Ashanks sliders do have some play, which makes the direction change a bit jerky.
I’m very interested in this product, but solely for timelapses. Is there anyone who might see this comment using one for this purpose? I’d love some feedback.
I have decided, I AM GOING TO BUY THIS SLIDER no matter what it takes.
I love timelapse videos..... well both
GVM sliders are horrible. I've tried 2 of them and they both failed miserably. Build quality was sub-par and their advertised "wireless" functionality isn't wireless at all. Then there's the fact that when you try to contact their support via email (which is someone's personal inbox), you get a bounce back stating the the email address does not exist. The support phone number isn't any better. Calling it routes you to a Google voicemail box telling you that "Mike" (or whatever) is not available. I highly recommend people stay away from this brand until they get their act together.
i have this, i bought it and love it, the only thing i hate about this, the motor is not strong enough to pull a camera upward
Yeah it doesn't have enough torque for vertical slides unfortunately. I've been fine with 45 degree angles though.
DOD Media - Thought I was watching a product review produced by the Department od Defense! LOL! Thanks, David!
Hi. What is the maximum possible time output for the slider length timelapse?
Hello mate ! I wanted to buy it but the price of the 80QD GVM is not at 499€ not 369$ on amazon how is that possible ?
great review of a great product ... for your questioning about the time-lapse parameters,
I've seen the manufacturer review and it's mentioned that : ( Step = Speed x interval ) ...
and I'm not sure what does that even mean , I just like to let you know
anyway I've already bought one a couple weeks ago but from another Brand which is (A&J)
it is exactly the same design and features and even the same controller .. and it's fantastic for this price.
Hey Bro, thanks for the video bro. Really helpful. Wanted to know which model would be the best to buy, is the 3ft one good for most work? Or does one need to get the 5ft one
I would use the slider to make awesome videos about beautiful motorcycles. I want capture the amazing custom paint jobs and detail.
Hello David, can this slider works with iPhone as well. or for mobile and GoPro we should use some other slider. if so, please suggest. thank you.
I gotta ask. I hear a lot of youtubers say "price point". What is the difference between "price point" and price? Is this just a style of presenting thing??
I am also looking for a motorized slider for shooting interviews. Question…. how quiet is the motor? Will you hear it in the bg?
Hmmm maybe I'm being picky but some clips looked jittery
I think that was caused by the fact I stupidly had it on the grass so blades of grass got in the way of the caddy and rails.
