42:40 That's a maximum and minimum thermometer! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six%27s_thermometer It displays the current temperature (looks like it's 26 ºC in the video) as well as the max/min temperature it's seen since it was last reset. The button in the middle activates a magnet that resets the max and min readings-that's why the left (min) marker dropped down to the current temperature.
Too funny. My wife and I visited Shiretoko the summer before Japan reluctantly started to allow foreigners back in. We stayed at a nice hotel so we had our breakfast and dinners provided no problem, but pretty much all other restaurants were still closed down or had very limited hours so we ended up visiting that same 7/11 for onigiri and the like on several occasions. As someone who has backpacked all over the Sierra Nevadas in California and seen plenty of bears in the back country the Shiretoko bear lecture was hilarious. To summarize, use your common sense.
I'm heading to Glacier National Park in Montana this summer and it's known to be bear country. Every visitor is encouraged to bring bear spray with them, and that's what I'll do as well. I also will practice with an Inert Training unit to make sure I have some idea of how to use it. ;). And will also be making noise while hiking to prevent startling the bears, coz that's what typically makes bears attack. They usually want to avoid human, unless they have cubs or protecting their food. So I'll do my best to avoid berry land and constantly be aware of my surroundings.
Interesting. Thanks. We walked the Shiretoko Lakes on a wet day in June 2009. The only bear we saw was a long way away on the other side of one of the lakes. I remember in the souvenir shop they had cans of bear repellent spray. On the label it said "only effective at a range of 1-1.5 metres," and I was thinking "Dude, at that distance you're dead anyway. " In the small print at the bottom it also said "100% efficacy not guaranteed. " Hmm.
Fab video! One major perk of having a hot onsen bath or sauna in the summer is that afterwards the body naturally cools down to regulate the heat. So you feel fresh and cool for a couple of hours in the summer heat.
If you ride anything two wheels you counter steer if you know it or not. Counter steering just means your turning the bars slightly the opposite way you are turning. I can see you doing it when you're going into corners. You'll get the hang of corners. Just do what you feel is comfortable.
my vocabulary was a bit off, what i meant was leaning with the bike in corners vs leaning against it. i feel much more comfortable leaning against the bike as it keeps my line of sight higher.
Update: The Netherlands has no national bird only an unofficial, its the Black-tailed godwit and no country has a Gull as a national bird but it is the state bird for Utah.
Bells were designed by Big Bear to make humans into lunch. Surely making noises, clapping and shit will attract bears. They'll just hear the tasty snacks and know where you're at.
Interesting. To be clear I talked with two rangers from the park who told me the bells are 1. not loud enough for the bear to notice until you are quite close and 2. when you get close and they hear them the sound makes them curious more than alerted to leave. I looked for any mention from the official park that suggested using bells and there as absolutely none. Clapping and making whooping sounds is what the official park folks suggested, and I just assume they know what they are talking about haha. Sorry for the novel, i'm passionate about bear bells. -E
@@kydeanderic Haha, well, it's a dire subject. This guide also advised against going on a hike by yourself even when clapping & screaming, or with a bear bell. I took that advise to heart despite the part of me that wants to see one up close, lol.
I don't know who this Eric fellow is, but he sure did take some of the best footage of a Black Bear fishing I've ever seen.

Those bears 🐻 I saw 4 of those bros when I did a cycling trip a few years back - luckily in Shiretoko when i wasn't on my bike 🚲 Loved Hokkaido
oh wow, four! that's wild!
24:45 Eric has footwear other than sandals! I wasn't sure if he owned anything else!
Doing that trip in the fall with the colors would be a must watch for me.

This is excellent thank you. The sight of a bear fishing will live long in the memory.
it's a favorite moment for sure.

The bear in the stream was some nat geo stuff! ❤
Thanks for the video. Made me smile!
I cackled when he said the Dutch had the seagull as a national bird..I kinda think sometimes we do! XD

sounds like the dutch could claim it then!
@@kydeanderic Consider the squirrell eating birds as claimed for the Dutch.
Loves this channel!

I'll be there next Saturday so that's nice.

Been walking all over Shikoku with a Bell - did not get eaten once.

21:52 As long as they don't holler back... wink wink.

Great adventure!
Vlogging as bear deterrence 😆
By the way, the bears were pretty awesome!
I've been on that same tour, and when I asked my guide, he said a bell is effective :O

best intro song evah!
Kodomo mac nuggets = happy meal :D
Glad you didn't get eaten by the bear. God's creation is indeed awesome!
You know that tune that ice cream trucks play to attract kids and customers...?
You know how Scrooge McDuck's secretary has a steel plate in her hat? You should probably get a reinforced beanie for protection
lol

You're also seven feet tall. I'm surprised you didn't bring a bear suit to the party.
where am i going to find a bear suit that fits me!?
@@kydeanderic Where do bears get their suits?
i assume at Men's Wearhouse haha
34:40 It wasn't just Japan that had stupid covid rules that made things worse, the USA had that also
