Same here. I just found a very listenable and melodic guitar player, you should check him out. His name is Eric Vera. Listen to his Greatest hits album. Thank me later.
I think most musician-first guitarists out there think and play like that and find great success. I think a certain image of what a good guitarist should be becomes quite inflated by certain people within the guitar community.
This reminds me of all my favorite jazz guitarists talking about listening to horn players more than other guitar players. I love technical guitar playing, but when it comes to just pure musical expression that stays with you, a really good melody/song/composition beats technical skill hands down.
I agree. I love fast riffs but typically the best fast riffs are based on really impactful slow riffs. They tell a story still and aren't just to show off arpeggios and such
Hendrix was obsessed with horn players, Sun-Ra, Coltrane and cats like that. Makes sense when you think about it as it's very "non-linear" and angular.
Hometown hero. Last time I saw Steve, it was a duo gig, him and a drummer, playing live loops, going through an orange tiny terror through a 412. Wild live guitar sound and super lyrical
That cellphone into the pickup is a cool way to get a lofi track behind the guitar. I'm sure its been done, but it would be a cool way to add a ghost radio vibe to a song.
Another inspiring video about a distinct and unsung hero. Rhett, creativity, appreciation, and musicality somehow seem to have totally enveloped you. I’ve always seen you as an exceptionally talented guitar player, but your creativity, openness, and humility make these videos truly special. I get the sense that you really know how you are distinct and part of something much greater. Something ineffable. Thank you 🙏
I saw Delicate Steve maybe 7 or so years ago. I had never heard of him before but I was blown away by his lead playing (and the tones he was able to get live)!
Rhett, loved this. I gotta take my hat off to you for the way you create original and compelling videos. I am a nerd and love the gear content but the videos about vibe, living life, and the power of music!!! Man, that’s what sets you apart. Thank you.
Great talk❤. Thanks for sharing it. Totally agree w him. Soon i played his songs i’ve felt someone was singing in my head his melodies. It was great. ❤. Cheers. Saludos from Japan.
I came across Delicate Steve's music a few months ago. I don't even remember how, but I do remember I was reading and the music was in the background and something about it pulled me out of the pages and into his zone. A beautiful incursion and since then, I've put a least one or two of his songs on every playlist to keep things interesting and joyful. Thrilled to see this interview come on (again unexpectedly!!) and loved it.
@@benchilds2374 I really love his older work, especially "Positive Force". Check out his 2015 "Delicate Steve Live in Las Vegas" album. It's a sample platter of a lot of his work and you might find stuff that resonates with you that has you going to the albums those songs are on!
Wild to hear him reference the Daniel Lanois/ Neville Bros album. I haven't heard that in years, but I remember their rendition of Amazing Grace completely changed my life and my approach to music.
I love Delicate Steve. Been listening to him since his great "This is Steve" album (2017). And, yes, he plays like a singer. That was my first impression of his stuff. It's like everyone is at the session, but the singer never showed up, so someone says, "Okay, you, guitar player, you're playing the singer's parts."
Since we just passed the holidays, his Christmas album from 2018 is one of my favs. That long version of frosty is so haunting. Just puts your mind in this bleak wintery landscape but with a little magic on top
Delicate Steve’s catalog is one of my favorites to just chill with or play along to. Love his tones and simple approach to making guitar oriented music
Thank you for doing this video! Did not know of Steve before this video. I find it very interesting to hear what musicians are thinking when creating. Went to a workshop where Chris Thile(mandolin) was showing how he plays sometimes thinking his favorite drummer(forget who that was). He went through how he thinks of adding each piece of the drum set to what he is playing. It was very enlightening and motivating. Very enjoyable to learn about musicians that take an instrument different places then what we typically hear.
Thanks for introducing me to this musician. Great playing and compositions but the thing I love the most is the mixes. They all feel so spacious and 3D.
Use to watch this guy play at my high school and the library in town with a couple of friends. Great to see him go so far. Such a cool dude, so chill, great music.
That was such a cool interview. I'm a fan of Steve's for a while now, but I didn't know he played on Jessy Wilson's album. The moment you mentioned his influence on your playing, it made sense. Plus his Tell It Like It Is live cover was so cool.
Rhett is into gear. Look at all the gear he has and how many different things he uses. Now, compare it to this guy saying he’s not into gear. Seems to hold true to me. 🤷♂️
@@bbmade yeah I get that, just sounds a little funny when you've got a 25 thousand dollar guitar in your hands to say that 😂 Either way, dude seems cool, I like how he approaches things differently on the instrument.
I've watched some Joe Cappa stuff, which is simultaneously bizarre, heart-warming, and hilarious, and I thought Delicate Steve was totally fictional. Ha!
hey rhett, that buzz your getting into your DJI Mic is from the wireless transmission to the receiver connected to your camera. i know recording directly to your camera is convenient but this is that method's fatal flaw. turn off the receiver. put it away, record audio internally with the dji mic, and just be happy you'll have a backup audio source from your camera's microphone. i shoot weddings, and learned this the hard way. DJI needs to seriously do something about this.
Thank you Rhett for using your platform to share the artists you’re being inspired by. I am still especially grateful for your shout out of Mark Speer of Khruangbin, thank you brother!
I've recently started playing in an instrumental band as a lead guitarist. Mostly originals, but some covers to pad the set. For the latter, I've been picking out the vocal lines for guitar on two songs, "In Dreams" by Roy Orbison, and "I Only Have Eyes for You" by the Flamingos. It's been a nice change of focus for my playing and is starting to influence my phrasing on originals. Guess I'm in good company with that approach. :D
The precision and charm in Delicate Steve is guitar is something I strive for in my cold email strategy, which is why I use Do You Mail alongside my primary cold email tools. The ease of creating multiple email IDs quickly helps maintain my sending rhythm without any drop in performance. Like Steve is solos, the setup is effortless and seamless, ensuring I stay in tune with my campaign goals. Worth every penny if emails are your thing!
Steve redefining guitar music is similar to how Mystrika redefines email outreach. It offers high quality email warmup in multiple languages, which is a treasure for diversity in my campaigns. I was skeptical at first, but Mystrika is open rate preheaders did magic! It is like adding that special riff to hook your audience. They even provide a Cold Email Accelerator Guide which is a must-read! You should give it a shot!
Seems like Rhett just plays a lot harder than Steve (for whom it’s set up). Steve plays it later in the video and it’s fine for him. There’s no ideal setup for all players.
Love this dude's personality and playing... He's insouciant but yet he actually does care about the details... It is refreshing; I haven't heard of him before or his music except this video but he seems to be an Artist more than someone who learned how to play to get chicks or to be blinded by a spotlight.. Glad you had him on Rhett.
Hey @RhettShull, you know the P.A.F. pickup video? Can we please get a full-length version of Brown Sugar? Your version of that song is the best I've ever heard!
I wasn't really feeling his idea of playing along with how vocalists move around the beat and melody, until he started playing with the Otis Redding track.
Thanks, Rhett! Like me, I think many of us are a little tired of this massive content on all social media and channels with scales, techniques, equipment aimed at guitarists and forgetting about the music, the simplicity, the melody.
I play a shitty squier stratocaster that I got off of craigslist for $100 bucks. The trem is shot so I stuck a piece of wood in to block it, I replaced the stock neck for a cheap reverse-headstock Chackson neck that I ended up with after a duplicate delivery from Amazon, the action needs to be lowered and the nut height needs to be adjusted. I also replaced the bridge pickup for a rail humbucker from amazon that was around $15. It's a piece of shit that still needs a ton of love that I don't have time for right now, but I love it.
When Hank Marvin meets Jeff Beck at the ‘Pearly Gates’, Hank will ask ‘what you been doing Jeff?’ Beck replies, ‘just chillin listening to Delicate Steve’. ❤
I feel like when I find a perfect clean tone, and a great, worn-in feeling guitar, I can't help but play kinda like what Delicate Steve is describing here. It almost feels wrong to play more than that in those moments. You just want to revel in the warmth of the tone and feel the notes ring out. Though as someone with a shreddy/hard rock/metal background, it can be hard to purposely play less, a great old Fender Amp and well-loved Tele just put you in that zone. When I think about it, those moments may be the ones where it *feels* the best to play guitar.
‘ I don’t really care about gear… this is a 1966 Strat’ 😂😂
i was just about to type this lol
Exact
I was thinking the exact same thing 🤣🤣🤣
like a snobbish New Yorker - LA the same lol
Compared to Rhett who has TONS of gear, this guy seems sincere about not being into gear, at least to me. 🤷♂️
With so much guitar olympics going on on the internet, its so refreshing to hear somebody who just wants to play like a singer.
Guitar olympics - nice one, you‘re right! :D
For real. I couldn't care less about technical shreddy guitar playing. Delicate Steve makes soulful melodies on his guitar.
Shred is borderline unlistenable.
Yeah I feel the same way, that's my current goal.
