- Carving a micro 1" minnow out of balsa wood to be used on a fly rod. At only 1.5 grams, this fly can easily be tossed on a 4wt fly rod. This is a first of a series of 3 videos to introduce some tools and jigs I designed.

this is awesome Mike!
You got a lot of time on your hands... 😎
I’m looking forward to seeing your painting & sealing process.
Since you are adding weight anyway, you could possibly make the minnow from closed cell foam if you have it on hand & don’t want to wait until you can get to a hobby store for balsa wood. You would follow the same grooving & carving steps.
Yes I know, you can carve and sand foam, but with this micro size of minnow, foam doesn't carve like balsa, it doesn't even sand well. I've tried foam (there is a video I produced a while back on foam minnows), the shaping is not as consistent for rounding and tapering. I am going to make molds where I can pour a two part epoxy foam and get the exact same shape every time without carving and very little sanding.
Very nice detailed video ! Thanks for doing these videos. The smallmouth should no wild for them.
The detail! You need very stead hands 😆
On your clamp, why not put the conture of the top of the minnow in the plastic of the clamp. Also put a line on each side of the clamp to indicate center of tubing on both ends of the clamp. This would allow better duplication of the minnow.
I get your suggestion; however, to get the contour, the jaws of the clamp would need to be much thinner, and that makes for the plastic to fail. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but it is balsa, so the clamps I made are not necessary. There's a better way.
Excellent
Great Video. What flexible tubing do you use with the Bunch of Balloons tubing to keep the hooks attached?
I hope to produce a video soon to show how to apply it to the bb tubing (it is a little tricky). Here's the link:

How about making a groove where you place the bird shot and making that a rattle that also keels?
I've tried that, but these things are micro small. The rattle effect requires glass or a metal which changes the weight to where they will not float. Also, adding to much weight makes casting a chore, it can be done, just not what I'm looking for.
@@TheFrugalFlyRodder It's a very cool hands on crafty fly. Using the bird shot for wieght that way is really slick. Thanks for sharing, appreciate the insight and reply.
So what did you do before you retired? You'd have made a great machinest or boilermaker!
I was a fitness equipment repair tech... mostly.
