  • Are there things that even a time machine can't change? And if that is the case, what exactly makes them impossible to change? These questions drive a lot of the narrative for Steins;Gate. And its answers to these questions are what make this series one of the most highly regarded sci-fi anime.
    This episode of Anime Science focuses on attractor fields and includes topics like worldlines, the many-worlds interpretation, fixed-point attractors, superpositions, and time travel metaphysics.

    El Psy Kongroo. Special thanks to comments from my other Steins;Gate videos that discussed some of this with me! Whenever I do another episode about this series, we'll finally talk about the Actual Time Machine (not its real name but it makes my life easier to call it that). And eventually I'll finished the upcoming Healer Girl episode, but it's tricky because it deals with medical stuff. Anyways thanks again for watching!!

    About Mayuri most likely her death can also be prevented like the death of Kurisu, but we do not know the reason why she dies. Kurisu always dies in the same place, for two reasons, documents about the time machine and from being stabbed by her father’s knife. And just then, when documents are burned because of the Okabe and when he takes a knife stab on himself, convergent point devergate and she survives. In the case of Mayuri, we do not know the exact reasons, and how Kurisu said that her birth could be the cause of death, we dont know exact convergence point that determined the death of Mayuri and cannot influence it, unlike Kurisu, there is a chance that you can find a convergence point that kill Mayuri and change her like with Kurisu but with the opportunities that Okabe has, this is unchangeable outcome like it says in Steins gate.

      This is exactly what I was thinking! We know more variables about Kurisu’s death therefore it’s preventable.

      I think Mayuri dying in the Alpha worldline is what initially caused Okabe to build a Time Machine. That’s why she always has to die.

    12:45 The convergence is also Okabe seeing Kurisu in a pool of blood, as that is what causes him to send a D-Mail and shift to the Alpha worldline. Weirdly enough, the shift to Alpha and back to Beta is also part of the Beta convergence field itself. There's several examples of this in Steins;Gate 0, although to a smaller scale. Furthermore, it's the incident where Okabe is rendered comatose in 2025, and then later revived using memories from the Time Leap machine in 2036 that makes Okabe realise that you can "trick" attractor fields. Okabe wasn't actually dead, but since he was comatose and the only person who knew he was alive was Daru, he survived his 2025 death date, due to the worldline essentially continuing on as if he were dead.

    I always imagine the divergence meter not changing when he time leaps due to the change in the world line being so incredibly tiny that there arent enough significant figures on the meter to show it.

    I had always wondered what reading steiner was and how Okabe got it. Then I had the thought that maybe it isn't a special power at all but observer bias on the part of the anime viewer/game player/alpacaman. Maybe we just so happen to be observing worldlines where he keeps his memory. Maybe he actually dies right as the world line changes and that lets his memories persist.

    • @ixisid
      @ixisid Рік тому +7

      in the games, it's clear that everyone has reading steiner at least to some degree, because with a bit of nudging, all of the characters will start to remember stuff from other worldlines. this is way more obvious in SG0 with Mayuri's cosplay friends and the hospital, since that doesn't rely on Okabe prompting them.
      it couldn't be him dying though, simply because the suzuha of that worldline knows when he dies.

      it’s Deja vu. Okabe just has some photographic memory type deja vu that lets him remember other timelines in full detail, rather than just something feeling like something has happened before, that something being an event that happened to you in another timeline

    Doesn't the fact that Okabe has reading Steiner create a kind of meta worldline with an attractor field resulting in the "Steins Gate" worldline being the only possible active worldline by the end of the series (barring any further time travel). Given that Okabe observes multiple worldlines within this meta-worldline also has implications for the quantum side of things.

    My understanding of World lines as Not parallel worlds is this:
    You have One car you can drive with, and infinite choices for which currently empty Road you want to drive on/You have One real world, but many mathematically possible worlds that could take place, they """ Exist """ the same way roads you aren't driving on exist, but they only exist conceptually, they don't have worlds, they are empty, until you do something to change the past, then there's a divergence, the World changes it's world line to that, and the alternate possibility that doesn't happen just exists conceptually now.
    Or for a simpler explanation, you aren't picking up new pages to write on, you are actively erasing and re-writing the same page you wrote on.
    I preffer this because, if the anime Is using Multiverse logic, the whole thing with Reading steiner/Deja vu makes no sense, if character's memories aren't being re-written, Why do they remember them? they shouldn't, because the changes never happened to them in the first place.
    Also because I honestly am Sick of multiverses, having it so you only have One real wolrd actively being re-written makes it feel like Heavy consequences, changing the past doesn't put you on a world where mayuri dies, no, you actually 'killed' them in Your world by changing the past.
    it feels way more like a forbidden power, time-travel, as if multiple worlds exist, it feels the contrary, consequense-less, you aren't actually changing anything with multiple worlds, only traveling to worlds where X had, will and always takes place, AKA there's an infinite amount of dead mayuris that never can be saved, which is a Dreadful concept and so incomprehensible to the human mind it becomes apathetic

    It never made sense to me why simply deleting a D-mail (an action that is done in the present, not in the past) changes divergence, because Suzuha said that every worldline is deterministic, so it shouldn't be possible?
    But the biggest mystery to me is what exactly happens when Okabe saves Kurisu and escapes using a time machine with Suzuha. He travels to the future, but the divergence changed and now he is somehow in the steins;gate worldline and the original Okabe from that worldline disappears??
    Anyway, very good video!

    • @Kashiik63
      @Kashiik63 Рік тому +7

      Let think like this
      Okabe send a D-mail > D-mail captured by SERN>SERN know the secret of the Phonewave >SERN send the Rounder to steal Phonewave and Capture Okabe , Daru , Kurisu (Mayuri died)>After thousands of timeleap and undo D-mail>Okabe has to undo the very first D-mail , but Okabe give up to save Mayuri becoz of Kurisu confession >Okabe and daru create Resistance >Okabe and Kurisu died in 2025 >After Okabe death,Daru has to complete time Machine>Daru killed by rounder>FG204 remain incomplete because of Daru died>Suzaha use FG204 to travel to 2010>Because of time Machine is incomplete, error occurs on the calculation, And FG204 struck on Radio building>Because of FG204 crash on Radio building the conference of time Machine hold by Nakabachi cancelled >Kurisu alives
      Just one D-mail shift Okabe to Alpha Worldline to Beta Worldline ,
      Hope you understand 👍

    I think that your explanation of the SG worldline is incorrect. Steins Gate world line is a worldline on the Beta attractor field, however its position within the beta attractor field is close enough to the alpha AF that certain characteristics of the beta attractor field are cancelled out by the alpha attractor field. At least that's the explanation they give. What really matters for changing the future is what Okabe percieves, not what happens. Okabe is the only one who can alter the future, (when a worldline changes, his actions are the only ones that are not accounted for due to his memories) so therefore only his point of view matters which is why faking kurisu's death worked. This is my understanding at least.

    MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE S;G FRANCHISE AND LARGER UNIVERSE
    S;G is one part of a larger series called the Science Adventure series. Spoilers to why these mechanics are the way that they are below. Beware.
    Steins;Gate takes place in a simulation called GAIA. This simulation does predictions on how the events of the simulation will go, and the core events leading up to this prediction are forced by the simulation to cause the prediction to be true. As a result, Mayuri dying over and over was the simulation trying to make sure a paradox doesn’t happen where Suzuha comes from a past that will not exist in the simulation. This is a defense mechanism of the simulation because too many paradoxes would crash the simulation. Worldlines don’t actually exist in S;G. If a simulation redoes its prediction because an event too drastically differs from the current prediction, the simulation will redo the prediction so that the existing paradox doesn’t crash the simulation. The divergence meter does not represent worldlines, but instead the % difference of the simulation from the world that simulates the reality. The meter number fluctuates when a simulation changes the prediction, which explains shifts, where the simulation loads a new reality with the new prediction. Okabe is a glitched NPC, and his reading steiner ability is a glitch that allows him to remember previous predictions of GAIA. GAIA tries to rewrite people’s memories to prevent further paradoxes, but RS allows him to retain his memories. The simulation is not very happy about Okabe being a walking paradox, and so to get rid of him, it deletes him from the simulation in the SG movie and rewrites people’s memories to forget him. Sorry this is a lot of info- I am attempting to explain a ton of stories in the universe of SG. If you want to better understand this, I highly recommend reading the entirety of the Science Adventure visual novel series.
