Public the list?
The "wheat scandal" in Pakistan refers to an alleged loss of around PKR 400 billion (over $1.1 billion) to the national exchequer due to the previous caretaker government's decision to import a massive quantity of wheat despite surplus domestic production.
Key Points About the Wheat Scandal.
In 2023-24, the caretaker government imported around 3.4 million metric tons of wheat costing over PKR 330 billion, even though Pakistan had a bumper wheat crop.
The imported wheat was purchased at prices higher than the prevailing market rates, causing significant losses to the government.
Around 1.3 million tons of the imported wheat was found unfit for human consumption due to fungus, compounding the losses.
The decision to allow heavy wheat imports despite surplus domestic supply has raised allegations of corruption, cronyism, and incompetence against the caretaker administration.
Farmers have been severely impacted, as the glut of wheat in the market due to imports has caused prices to plummet, leaving them struggling to sell their produce at fair rates.
Involvement of Shehbaz Sharif Government
The Shehbaz Sharif government, which took over after the caretaker setup, has ordered an inquiry into the wheat import scandal.
However, there are conflicting reports on whether the government intends to take strict action against those responsible or is reluctant to dig deeper due to political considerations.
While Nawaz Sharif wants indiscriminate action against all involved irrespective of their political clout, the Shehbaz Sharif government seems hesitant to involve anti-corruption agencies like NAB or FIA in the probe.
The government has formed a fact-finding committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary to investigate the matter.
