Hey, I wanna just try to make some simple music as an enthusiast, like a hobby, maybe later even pick an entry level MIDI keyboard, but for now I just want to use my computer keyboard - no instruments - to make some sounds. What DAW do you recommend? The ones that caught my attention were Cakewalk, LMMS and Reaper. Also, do you have any videos about this - getting started as enthusiast with no instruments, just the computer keyboard and using virtual instruments?
For free, I recommend Cakewalk and/or Waveform not necessarily in that order. It’s worth trying both. If I was to choose any program free or paid then I would go with FL Studio for what you want to do. It actually sounds like exactly what you want. I started out with it and used my computer keyboard for a couple years but both Waveform and Cakewalk will allow you to use your computer keyboard too. You can download the free FL Studio Demo and try it out. It’s completely unlocked except you can’t load your saved projects. So you can save your projects and render them to audio but you can’t load them up again until you buy a license. I used to create sounds in the demo, render them to audio and then load that audio into other programs. LMMS is similar to FL but the workflow isn’t as intuitive as FL Studio and it doesn’t come with all the instruments however you can download a ton of free instrument plugins to use with these programs too so give LMMS a try and see if it works for you.
@@AudioTechTV What I didn't like about Waveform is the fact that I need to create an account in order to download and use, that's why I gave priority to Cakewalk. But since it's the first on your list, I might give it a try! Gonna watch a few videos and see which of these two are the best for me. And I want to start with a free DAW instead of picking FL Studio, at least for now, and depending of how my learning goes, my first expense would be with a 25 key midi keyboard. And what about Reaper? Too advanced for beginner and for what I want to use it? Ty so much for answering!
Hey great video, thanks for info. can I ask, is it possible to use usb midi keyboard and arteria presets sounds ect into the cakewalk DAW so that I can record them into the cakewalk daw? thanks
Go for Pro Tools Intro. Pretty much any song you hear on the radio (that’s been released from the 90s to now) has been mixed in Pro Tools. Tons of movie scores have been done in it and video game music too. So if that’s what you want then go for Pro Tools.
Hi this might be a bit stupid, but what DAW could/should I use for recording covers? I want to simply record my vocals and myabe add the instrumental from the original song, but everything you listed was obviously much higher level. I simply wanted to record maybe 20 songs for my mom, nothing fancy, but now I'm lost in the music production world :DD
Sorry I’m just getting into making music and was wondering. When you say plug in’s does that mean you can plug in your instrument and record your own material into that software? Thanks
Plugins can be virtual instruments and/or virtual effects. Most of these programs come with a few FX and instruments. You can expand these programs by adding “plugins” this way you aren’t stuck with the using only the instruments and FX that come with the programs. There are tons of plugins available. Some of them emulate classic hardware and some are their own thing. You can look up VST plugins to find more info.
Hi there! Great channel, I like Your videos. Just a little comment to this one. As I know Cubase LE (now 13) is free and You can download this as it is. Without having some special gear. just register yourself and download some other dependences. 16 audio tracks, 8 instrument tracks, 24 MIDI tracks. Included 2 vst3 instruments some effects and can load yours own vsts or vstis.. Wish You the best!
I've had Cubase LE since 2006 and it has always been bundled software that get's included with various hardware that I've bought. I just checked and Cubase 13 LE is the same way. They haven't made it free for everyone. I'm not sure how you got it to work without getting a license for it but I just tried with an account that I don't have a license for LE and it wont work. I know Steinberg has made Sequel free but it's really not worth installing as it's a 32 bit program.
@@AudioTechTV Maybe You´re right. I also have had Cubase LE4, that was bundled with my new hardware, then update to v6 and then to v10. But I think this last v13 I have downloaded with another account, but maybe I´m wrong. I must see if there is something that I´d missing. Thank You for Your reply and wish You the best. You make nice and very sophisticated videos, I´m glad that I´m Yours subscriber..
I love Cakewalk by Bandlab. But now I am having problem with TTS-1. I can't install it back, so when I play midi file, I saw signal, but can't hear the sound. What is the problem with that? I love to be able to use Cakewalk, but having problem with no TTS-1 installed in it. This software is just crap.
I use LMMS and Reaper, because they can import MIDI files into fully functional tracks. Although Cakewalk is terrific, I can't import MIDI. Which of these can do this?
2 questions if I may, Zane...... 1) you said Pro Tools Intro can handle eight audio tracks, eight instrument tracks, and eight MIDI tracks...... Does that mean 24 tracks total OR 8 tracks TOTAL? 2) I'm currently using a different DAW..... can I import those individual tracks into Pro Tools Intro?
It can technically go up to 24 tracks at the same time if you use all 8 audio, instrument and midi tracks. You also get 4 aux input tracks which can behave like an effect send or bus. You can import your audio and midi from other DAWs but not the effects chains or settings. So if you have settings in FX plugins that you want to use in Pro Tools then save the preset or write down the settings so you can load it in pro tools. One thing to note about plugins in pro tools is that it uses the AAX format so you may not have installed that version when installing plugins before or maybe you did. Most paid plugins include the AAX version and a lot of free plugins also have AAX versions but there are still some that don’t.
@@Michaelvan-x1r Pretty much all decent plugins come with both VST3 and AAX but there are some free ones that don't offer it yet however I've noticed lately that most do.
@@jamesbondaygee there still is studio one prime but they’ve changed how you get it (again). Apparently now (unless they changed again) you download the demo for the full studio one. When it runs out, it turns into the Prime version.
Can someone please recommend some *simple* software for me? I have ordered an interface and a condenser mic, and I already have a pair of "desktop studio speakers" that I've never used and some old but great Sennheiser headphones. I have no intentions of trying to be a professional musician. All I want is to be able to record vocals and keyboard separately (because I can't play and sing at the same time worth a damn) and do some overdubs on both vocals and keyboard. I don’t need perfect sound quality -- I don't know sh*t about latency, gain, etc., and I don’t play guitar. The software doesn't necessarily have to be free (though that would be great!) -- the main thing to me is simple. Thanks!
For free I would recommend trying Luna. It recently became free on Windows so wasn’t on this list. Waveform Free is also another great option but I think Luna might be a bit easier. For a paid program again you could go with the pro version of either of those programs if you wanted or Mixcraft 10 is another great option that is pretty straight forward and easy to use. All of the programs pretty much do the same things the difference is their workflow/user interface and included plugins. They are all going to require some time to learn. The funny thing is that a lot of us start out with the same attitude. “I don’t want to be pro or anything, I just want to record some stuff for fun”. And then once you start catching on, you begin to wonder “if I can sound that good with this stuff, what if I had something better…”. And it continues lol. Have fun and good luck!
I’m not sure what Lenavo is. If you are talking about Lenovo laptops then any of them should work with it but it really depends on the specs because Lenovo have been making laptops for years and have so many different models. If there’s a program that appeals to you, have a look at the minimum specs on the website for that software and see if your computer meets those specs.
@@JzR0911 It's only $60 once (I believe that's good for two full number revisions of free updates, which will take years) If you make over $20,000 in revenue with the program, then a commercial license is $225-still way cheaper than Pro Tools. You can also install it on multiple computers as long as you only use one at a time, and they even let you use the entire program's functionality during your trial. On top of all that, I just really like the system itself. It's light, powerful and has a nice contextual tool system where you're not switching manually all the time; you can get different functions by clicking on different sections of a waveform or MIDI roll. Drag from top changes the volume or velocity of only that section. Drag from sides is non-destructive editing, drag from top corner pulls out a fade, and you can right click to change the fade shape, etc. Awesome program.
The installation process for pro-tools is trash it's overly complex for no reason. It set up a separate account with some software called 'ilok' automatically and put my email as the user ID, which is horrible, then you have to use their installer and that asks for your SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR password and I don't have one.
@@splashbrosmusic it might be easier to tell you the ones you can’t add plugins to. You can’t add plugins to Studio One Prime, Magix Music Maker Free, both of the online cloud based programs, and audacity can’t use instrument plugins but can use VST3 FX. All the other programs will allow you to bring in third party plugins.
Are you on a windows pc? Or a Microsoft tablet? A windows PC will have a hard drive or SSD drive that’s where the operating system and all your files and programs are stored. Maybe your hard drive is too full? I’m not familiar with the MS tablets so I don’t know how they operate if that’s what you’re using.
The names of each program are in the video and in the description. Also the links to each website are in the description. You can download them from their website. All info needed is given in the video and description.
There are over 11 programs mentioned here so I don’t know which one “it” is but with any of them go to their website, register if you need to, find the windows installer, download and install. Just like any other program.
Pro Tools sucks don't get it I'm here because I'm trying to get a new software because it is so glitchy and hard to use if you want to switch off your audio interface and just edit music through some headphones it glitches and won't initialize.
You’re using it incorrectly and claim that it sucks because of that. Lol. If you disconnect your audio interface and your software is setup to use your audio interface then it doesn’t magically know that you’re switching to something else. If your audio interface doesn’t have a headphone output on it, you may want to get a different one. You could try using Asio4all as your driver and then set it so both your audio interface and your built in soundcard (or whatever you have your headphones connected to) are active as outputs this way you can freely switch between the two without having to turn off your interface. The behaviour that you’re explaining will happen with other programs too.

I am dissapointed a bit by Cakewalk because they made all options of their Daw as a subscription model. I don't know how long it will be possible to use the free version until somethinhg happens that it will make it not possible.
It looks like they might have discontinued Studio One Prime recently. I know they’ve done that in the past and then brought it back so maybe they’ll do that again or maybe it’s gone forever. Lots of change with free DAWs this year. A good addition that isn’t in this video is Luna has recently been released for free on Windows.
I suppose you're talking about Logic Pro X which was Mac-only for the past 20+ years (I used the original Windows-based product developed by Emagix in the late '90s: when Apple acquired Emagix in 2002 they quickly turned the software into a maxclusive application). Starting in 2023, a product by the same moniker but slimmed-down functionality is available for the iPad, too.

And I want to start with a free DAW instead of picking FL Studio, at least for now, and depending of how my learning goes, my first expense would be with a 25 key midi keyboard.
And what about Reaper? Too advanced for beginner and for what I want to use it?
Ty so much for answering!
Hey great video, thanks for info. can I ask, is it possible to use usb midi keyboard and arteria presets sounds ect into the cakewalk DAW so that I can record them into the cakewalk daw? thanks
Yes you can use midi keyboards and Arturia plugins in Cakewalk by Bandlab.
Today is the day I shall start recording in the comfort of my room thank you for this info🫡
Too many options to pick which would you recommend me? what softwere that usually used for movies, videogames and popular music?
Bandlab by far! Just import the instrumental cover and insert a voice recording track and you have it to go!
@@s3a669 Thank you! :)) I already recorded them but you're absolutely right, I ended up using bandlab as the best option :D
Cakewalk is not free now, so sad, was my favorite
Man, i just wanna be a cool alternative artist but now i won't be able to :(
Cakewalk is free - if you're not able to save projects, you need to create an account and sign in. Then it activates the software.
Can i accsee my projects after it gets discontinued?
ocenaudio is a pretty cool alternative for audacity meanwhile
Love it
Thanks 😊
Thank you for watching. Keep creating! 👊👍
I'm having the same problem...
I had a similar problem with damaged registry files. Fixed by starting Cakewalk in Administration mode.
Thank you sir
Great DAW's but MPC beat is good for live stuff, edm not so much. That why i went to TF and had no issues.
I want to use cakewalk but only for live recording, for OBS via Reastream. Can it be able to dobit?
I use LMMS and Reaper, because they can import MIDI files into fully functional tracks. Although Cakewalk is terrific, I can't import MIDI. Which of these can do this?
Thanks a lot
@@AudioTechTV wow!! fast reply!! Thanks for that 😃
Not VST 3? That sucks 😥 Probably a gamechanger for me, then
@@Michaelvan-x1r Pretty much all decent plugins come with both VST3 and AAX but there are some free ones that don't offer it yet however I've noticed lately that most do.
Virtually 32 tracks because have additional 8 midi tracks that you can route to iXpand sampler plugin with the 16 channels filter
Anyone know why cakewalk dont work with making beats, and only has pre set drum patterns?
thank you, needed to find a free daw cus bandlab is kinda cheeks
Correct me if I am wrong, but there's no Studio One Prime any more! It's just takes me to buy the other ones.
@@jamesbondaygee there still is studio one prime but they’ve changed how you get it (again). Apparently now (unless they changed again) you download the demo for the full studio one. When it runs out, it turns into the Prime version.
Now where will we get the tutorial to learn these ?
I have tutorials for a bunch of these programs.
@@AudioTechTV Thanks SO much! Quickest reply ever!
Cakewalk by bandlab
I bought a beat from beatstar and all I want to do is record my vocals over the big.How do I do that on a catewalk app
I want to record my voice over the beat. On the cakewalk ap
Which one is suitable foe lenavo ?
I’m not sure what Lenavo is. If you are talking about Lenovo laptops then any of them should work with it but it really depends on the specs because Lenovo have been making laptops for years and have so many different models. If there’s a program that appeals to you, have a look at the minimum specs on the website for that software and see if your computer meets those specs.
If you wanna pay a small amount for a very powerful and versatile DAW, get REAPER
how much was that? is it one time pay?
@@JzR0911 It's only $60 once (I believe that's good for two full number revisions of free updates, which will take years)
If you make over $20,000 in revenue with the program, then a commercial license is $225-still way cheaper than Pro Tools.
Sounds sketchy, I would delete it and not give it any more information.
I gave up on ProTools
As of September 2024, Cakewalk is still free
what mic ar u using ??
In this video I’m using the Shure SM7dB.
Which one you can add your plugin
@@splashbrosmusic it might be easier to tell you the ones you can’t add plugins to. You can’t add plugins to Studio One Prime, Magix Music Maker Free, both of the online cloud based programs, and audacity can’t use instrument plugins but can use VST3 FX.
All the other programs will allow you to bring in third party plugins.
thnks
Hmm, is it true that Waveform Free does not have track editor?
Waveform Free does not include their Track Editor.
I downloaded Tracktion Wavform but it won’t work I think I need a hard drive it says cause I’m on a Microsoft computer
@@AudioTechTV I’m using a tablet but yah I think I see the problem thank you
Hlo sir didn't found Studio one prime in the website
If you watched this video, at the part that talks about Studio One Prime it tells you how to get it.
Cakewalk is no longer free if you want to save/export your projects
This video is slightly depressing now that a few of these are gone lol
No mention of Ardour?
Tell me you didn’t watch the video without telling me you didn’t watch the video.
@@AudioTechTV I typed that before watching the whole thing, admittedly. DERP my bad
When you say pro tools intro what do you mean FREE FOREVER OR FREE TRIAL ?
All of these are free forever. Pro Tools Intro shows up as a perpetual license in your Avid account.
@@AudioTechTV for real... is the third party plugin in the protools unlimited or how much plugin can you add.
@dand6450 you can add as many plugins as you want.
Download apps name please🤔🤔
The names of each program are in the video and in the description. Also the links to each website are in the description. You can download them from their website. All info needed is given in the video and description.
Cakewalk pitches my mic up...any tipps?
I mean you could change recording settings or edit it after recording?
Tracks live by waves
No Reaper mention?
First this video is about free programs. Reaper is not free. Second, Reaper is mentioned 10:15.
How to download it in windows please help me
There are over 11 programs mentioned here so I don’t know which one “it” is but with any of them go to their website, register if you need to, find the windows installer, download and install. Just like any other program.
Dont forget Soundation too
Can i use it for Live karaoke ?
Jajaja
🥴😵💫wow- overwhelming… just looking for something to record narration …
Audacity
Definitely audacity
I like soindtrap but it doesnt have good instruments
Has the word 'metal ' gone out of the music lingo.
Cakewalk is too difficult to understand compared to Bandlab
Cakewalk is a more professional program so it will have a steeper learning curve.
@@AudioTechTVjust what I’m looking for
what about Luna?
This video came out before Luna was released on PC but Luna is an excellent option. I actually have several videos on it already. Here’s my Luna for PC playlist

I am dissapointed a bit by Cakewalk because they made all options of their Daw as a subscription model. I don't know how long it will be possible to use the free version until somethinhg happens that it will make it not possible.
studio one prime is not free
It looks like they might have discontinued Studio One Prime recently. I know they’ve done that in the past and then brought it back so maybe they’ll do that again or maybe it’s gone forever.
Lots of change with free DAWs this year. A good addition that isn’t in this video is Luna has recently been released for free on Windows.
When the StudioOne trial ends, it becomes StudioOne Prime
i thot Pro Tools is for Mac only?....plse enlighten
I suppose you're talking about Logic Pro X which was Mac-only for the past 20+ years (I used the original Windows-based product developed by Emagix in the late '90s: when Apple acquired Emagix in 2002 they quickly turned the software into a maxclusive application). Starting in 2023, a product by the same moniker but slimmed-down functionality is available for the iPad, too.
@@m1nnefr3d thks for the info....i will look for the download for my windows.....cheers!
