Did They Really Say $17,000? A Misdiagnosis From The Dealership

- Hey Good People,
You guys know, that the more I post videos on the 3.6 Pentastar, the more people are going to bring me their pentastar products. And I love it! It just helps me get better and better at working with them!
In this video, customer was quoted by the local Dodge dealership for a new engine. Skeptical about his head gasket being blown, he brought it to me for a second opinion.
I would like to think that the dealership is would be more knowledgeable about their products and what fails on them than me. But somehow, here we are. Please leave your comments below. I'd love to hear what you guys think about this.

I had a dealership tell me I needed a new computer once not long ago because of HVAC and MIL codes. All kinds of stuff weren't working like cruise control, ambient air temperature sensor, air conditioning, limp mode on transmission, and more. I went around the inside of the engine bay and took off and cleaned every ground wire connected to the body coming from the fuse box, computer, and basically every ground I could find. Reconnected the battery, and all of those things instantly corrected themselves. Erased all codes, and none of them have come back since, which was over 9 months ago now. This is on a 2005 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi. Cost me 20 minutes of my time and $0 money. They wanted thousands for a bunch of parts and labor that I didn't need.
In the vein of Scooby-Doo, the dealer would finish the episode saying, I would have gotten away with it($17,000),if it weren't for these mettlesome kids!
😂😂😂😂 you just triggered a childhood memory lol
@@AlexTheCarDoctor Now you gotta do a Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine. I used to pass one everyday in Massachusetts.
You are good my friend, God bless you and your wife and team.
Thank you kindly
Pardon the Interruption... Alex, I would tow my vehicle from Indiana to you before I let a dealership touch it 😂
Say real talk! I’m in Houston and been thinking the same 💩
Perioddddd
I wish I could!
It would be nice to have honest techs like Alex the Car Dr., The Car Care Nut, Car Wizard, Brandon Parker Mobil Mechanic, BC Auto Solutions, Peter from Toyota Maintenance YT Channel, to name a few locally in the Dallas area…
no need, I live in Indiana. I only charge my customers when I help them, if I cannot fix the issue; it is free, that's how confident I'm with my diagnosis.
Amazing that a dealership would drop a $17k quote and wouldn't make damn sure it's the right diag.
They never do. KIA is probably the worst. I took my Optima in for diag and they said it would take 9 days. So I made an appointment to bring my car back and when I dropped it off they said it would be 3-4 days. This was a Tuesday and by Tuesday of the next week it hadn't been assigned a tech - I went and got my car.
Nice to watch a proper diagnosis, from someone who knows their stuff!
That is a true stealership. Nice job Alex
Dealerships assume at best . Most of the time time they just flat out, tell you false information without even investigating.
and charge you more for it.
Go fix the grain on the leather of your factory interior Phil 😂😂😂😂😂
That is what my dad told me he is a mechanic the dealership will upsell you for anything and other services you don’t need just to make a commission
Hello Car Doctor. I'm in Baton Rouge. I wish there were more machanics like you. It seems everyone wants to do the least and get paid the most. You are rare in your field. And whatever you charge, it seems you go through all the diagnostic steps to find the problem, and that's worth a lot. I hope your not just doing it for the camera 😂 just joking you are different I've been following you for a while now.
. Where are you located, if I may ask. Yall are the the best.
I appreciate it lol I try to keep it real all the way. On and off camera. 😎 and thank you for recognizing the diagnostic process is of value. I hate when people ask me does it go toward the repair after I just did all that work to figure out the problem 😔
I'm in Port Allen and wish I could find a mechanic like him in the area
Alex as a Chrysler tech myself I totally agreed with how you approached this vehicle unfortunately for the customer I think they may have gotten a “lazy” or inexperienced tech? But I will say I have seen this failure before on multiple CDJR products
Thanks for confirming this. I know you guys at the dealership see way more of this than I do! Which is why I’m baffled that they said the head gasket was blown 🤔
I've seen in my career that dealer flat rate pay plans make dealer techs dishonest, I always recommend that people treat their car to a independent repair shop for the maintinence and repairs as you would want a Dr. for yourself. We need the so called "gravy" work like oil services as that will allow our independents the ability to look over the car for service issues that will be coming due in the future. Keep up the great diagnostic work!
Owned a '99 ford windstar with 10 years of worry-free service(it's true, ask my wife!) It developed this same condition with the transmission cooling lines through the radiator. 1 dealer, 3 independent shops all totalled my engine. My neighbor's grandfather(retired mechanic)told me to change the radiator, and flush the coolant system. It solved the problem, but coolant had contaminated the transmission, which i replaced, then sold the vehicle.
Dealer techs are paid on flat rate (e.g. paid by the job). Therefore this creates an incentive to maximize repair costs, labor hours, and to cut corners, because mechanics are always fighting against the clock. Also, service advisors are paid on commission. The pay structure in a dealership is to maximize revenue, with customer satisfaction taking a back seat.
This is why I quit being a mechanic. While I never ripped any customers off, I did not recommend services not needed. Many times I worked 40 hours, but was only paid for 20-30. Many great mechanics leave the dealerships (or other shops) to start their own shop or just leave the industry entirely. Being a mechanic is a very rewarding career, but it's hard to feed your family working on the flat rate system.
pretty idiotic reason to "quit being a mechanic" 😂😂😂 not all shops / dealerships are ONE IN THE SAME !
This is true. That is why I quit every shop I ever worked for. I never believed in selling services they don’t need. My best job was an hourly job doing fleet work at UPS. I think those guys are getting paid in the mid to high 40’s per hour these days
I have a '21 Ram 3.6 with 45k miles sitting here with a rod out the side of the pan. It sat at the dealer for a few months. They ended up saying chrysler denied the repairs, quoting "lack of maintenance." That's funny, they did the maintenance the first 35k miles and the last two oil changes the guy has receipts showing it was done. But the dealer quoted $14k for a new engine. What happened to the 60k mile drivetrain warranty? Oh yeah, it only applies when they say it does.
The same customer just dropped off his '18 Jeep Cherokee 3.6 and thought the starter was bad because it wasn't turning over. Nope, cyl 3 full of water. Hydrolocked for sure. Now trying to track down all the parts to replace the pass head. I have a '05 Chrysler sitting here with 100k and a rod knocking. I have a '15 Ram ecodiesel that needs $8k in exhaust parts to get it out of limp mode. I've replaced several 3.6 heads for the #2 misfire. Can they not get it right? I mean, all I hear about is how Fords suck and has issues but the chryslers are coming in left and right.
Sounds like people just don't maintenance their cars or straight up abuse of them. I have a 2020 ram 1500 5.7L with 105k miles and I never had an issue.
@@jcc9thSI1917 I don't see many 5.7s with the same issues. It's the 3.6 pentastar that sucks. But yes, people just don't do maintenance like they should.
Thank ya’ll. We love you guys and we appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience. Advancing the human species!
Nice GOD put you two good people together. Kindness is a weakness to the indecent but virtuous to the decent. You two are among our most decent. Thank you. Bravo nice work.
Wow, thank you for your kind comment 🙏🏽
First time watching your video and have just subscribed.. you do your work with passion and all honesty. Keep doing the good work 👍
I have a 2014 nissan maxima. No white smoke, no sludge. Just p430, p420. Had also a p305, 217, 300 and 174. A coil was broken, and looks like cheap plugs on it. Coolant leaking somewhere, the reservoir has black coolant with a strong odor. Two mechanics performed hydrocarbon tests. One said it was positive, the other said negative. Not sure who to believe or where to go. One suggested new gasket and coil, the other just a tune up.
What a you know a honest mechanic. Unbelievable
That block tester is not a 100% test on if the head gasket is compromised. We had one of those 3.6 engine over heating and did the block test and passed. Fixed the leaking thermostat housing, let the vehicle go and she came back said it was still over heating. So I got my gas analyzer and found over 200 ppm of hydrocarbons in the cooling system.
A damn good video. I wish you were up here in the DC area.
Just found your channel. Great diagnostic. I had the same situation on my Ford van. Oil cooler was shot. When you showed the external shot of the cooler and then showed the overflow and radiator, I would have been surprised if the leakdown chemical would have turned color.
Alex your the definition of service with a smile! 🙂
Even Dodge is in denial that their oil filter housings are bad.
That’s insane!
No they didn't t they revised them
@@bigdaddymak1439 They revised them 3 or 4 times already and they still leak.
@@Mike__P o rings gonna leak eventually period. Unfortunately you can't move to cooler away for the heat.
And when you change the oil most don't use a rag and oil sets their
Thank you for this video I learn something new everyday.
Think the dealership poured some oil in the coolant ???. If so that’s shady.
Nice find, hopefully you got a new customer for life now!
Oil mixed with coolant could be from leaky gaskets/o-rings under the oil cooler, cause I could see water mixed with oil at 1:56 when you first looked at the oil cooler
A TRUE! Honest master automotive mechanic at work!!!👑💪🏿✊🏿👏🏿💯🔧🚗

Damn good, diagnosis!!! I love your videos :-)
because of experience with a stealershitp a loooong time ago, ive built up a mechanics collection of tools, specialty tools, pullers, testing kits, etc, everything a pro mechanic would have but im not a pro mechanic. ive been repairing my own cars and other people cars for about 25 yrs because i do not trust any shop no matter if they have a good reputation or not. doing my own work, I KNOW its done right. plus with all the money i save doing the work myself, i buy tools BEFORE i need them. im a "better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it" type of guy.
i hope other people can help themselves sove some money and learn a new skill by watching alex's channel and other yt mechanics. rainman ray is also a good channel along with south main auto. if you try to repair your own car, just know and admit when your in over your head. some things for some one starting out might be too big of a job right away or if you dont have the right tools. take notes from what your favorite yt mechanic says and do research before attempting a repair. it will cost more for a mechanic to fix your mess.
I'm same way, got tired of throwing money at problem just to get it back needing fixed right from stripped bolts and whatever else they permanently ruined. Better to take that money and but the tools and do the job once cheaply
One of the best channels on the tube. Great job sir and ma'am.
Thank you so much 🙂
Alex, I love the upbeat chats with your wife! You, and I, are blessed to have loving, caring and God blessed women in our lives. She and my wife are definitely Proverbs 31 women.
Btw, I’m also a new subscriber. I pray God’s blessings on you, your family and your business! 🙏❤️👍
Thanks so much! I wouldn’t be where I am without my wife. I thank God for her every day. And I’m thankful you found your Proverbs 31 woman as well 🙏🏽
Agree, this is a ridiculous dealership assumption for something that may look as a possible "blown head gasket" I think most of the failure from the technician at this diagnosis is... the flat rate (they pressure to get things done fast) and tons of warranty jobs (underpay labor) because of manufacture defects/ errors.
Since manufacture cheap out on quality control on the production line now technicians have to pay with their check to fix the manufacture errors for being cheap since they get underpay ridiculously.
A true honesty good mechanic technician guru and brave to the wife 👍👍
Thank you Alex and wife for going back to the dealer. The fact that they were still willing to be defensive and rationalize their sloppy work to “we go off what they say…we only get an hour diagnostic” shows the level of robbery they are willing to embark on selling engines all year long.
If it truly was a mistake, they should have owned up to it and promise to try to do better.
It is your job as a service writer professional to interpret what the customer is saying, what the mechanic is saying, and recommend the proper repairs and explain in laymens terms for the customer. This clip right here proves that the service writers are in cahoots with the mechanics, most likely because they have a scumbag GM and Owner. Please Dox this dealership so they can go out of business. Thank you Alex for being an Angel for people. Keep wrenchin’! 🛠️
Awesome job you're a real one!!💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💪🏿💪🏿✊🏿✊🏿!
Awesome!! My 13 JKU has 198K. Had to replace the engine about 3k ago due to failed HG. (Yes they did several block tests to confirm) It was only $7k though (Indy Shop) and that included new radiator, hoses, etc...... I figured $4k for a HG repair and then something else could go wrong it was a no brainer. The new engine has a 3 year 100k warranty. My original never had the tick either, all the way to the end.
That’s why they’re called a “STEALERSHIP”!!!
i have a toyota hybrid, if you stretch the oil changes too far you can get condensation in the oil. itll look like milkshake of doom but head gasket will be fine. its because with the auto start stop of being hybrid the block cools enough for water to find its way in through the humidity in the air.
I've seen Rainman Ray change quite a few of those oil coolers, you got oil going to it and coolant lines, if they fail fluids can mix. He always puts in the Dorman units being they are all metal.
Yeah Dorman is the way to go! I love Rainman Ray😎
I like that little old Ford fiesta in the background,, can fit a refrigerator in the back of those things,, had two and I drove the wheels off both of them
Whats up Alex how are you and mrs car doctor love the videos yall are great i learned so much from you i put a water pump on my 2001 ford Taurus SE 3.0 ohv motor i have a question i have a check engine light on for small evap leak i replaced the cap and it idling rough at idle but runs great once i give it gas please let me know your thoughts on that thanks and god bless 🙏
I have done a few of these oil coolers. Gosh, the engineers love us so much that they express it by putting that damn thing in the middle of the frickin engine.
Ima bout to buy a dodge with lifter failure just so I can take it to your shop bruh 😂 keep up the 🔥 content 💯
Oil cooler failed, I had the same problem. They have a fatal flaw. The design is bad. There should be a recall with so many failures. There is a dorman all aluminum cooler replacement.
That's the oil cooler and they make the aftermarket aluminum ones pluss there's also other aftermarket upgrade parts as well that where switched from plastic to aluminum for these engines brother good job !
Flushing oil out of a cooling system is a terrible job. I did one last year in a HEMI. Oil cooler leaked oil into the coolant. I used dishwashing detergent, and flushed it 3-4 times, pulling the block plugs as well.
Awesome video! Would have like to know how much u chared for that fix so the viewers can compare the price difference.
17,000 doollarsss they must have bumped they head! they money hungrayyy
Good diagnosis!U da man!😎
My 2001 Deville block test turn green in less than 5 minutes. It had one head bolt threads stripped out. Oil got into the heater core. You not going to make them change it?
The oil cooler has coolant running through it too. After replacing oil cooler best to change oil and coolant
If oil cooler seals are shot out it mixes in the cooling system allowing reservoir to fill up with oil....replace head gaskets ,oil cooler, and all coolant hoses...also radiator and thermostat... don't forget oil change
I'm finally happy someone is exposing the dealership for their bad practices. Imagine taking your vehicle to the people who are supposed to know the most about your vehicle and get ripped off. And then charges you a premium .
Since you were replacing all coolant hoses did you also flush and replace the back heater core for back passengers and hoses leading to the heater core? I know it is always a good idea to flush that as well.
Great content
I’m not surprised to hear 17k we know the community that owns these establishments. We know the rituals they perform with the insurance companies.
Engine oil coolers are a super common failure point on a lot of modern cars. I usually see that on BMWs or VW products. Oil filter housings are also notoriously problematic on Audis. Those are a real pain to change out on the V8 engines.
And they all deny that the decision to switch to plastic is at all to blame for the problem that they don’t acknowledge is a problem.
Been wanting to get a scanner is the top don the best bang for your buck atm? What do you think or do your recommend any others scanner?
Sometimes, the vehicle will run at normal temperature at idle and in regular driving. But once it goes on the freeway, it overheats.
Which is typically the thermostat.
Thats why i always test drive. Letting it idle isnt a good enough test, especially for coolant issues
2016 Chrysler 200 Limited with the dreaded 3.6 here….I have oil in my coolant reservoir which caused a really thick milky substance but there is no coolant in the oil. It did run hot and I immediately pulled over and had it towed home. Should I just remove the reservoir to clean it and also drain the rest of the coolant and oil and replace the oil cooler? Or should I clean the reservoir/drain coolant and refill and do the block test to make sure it’s not a head issue? The oil cooler, to my knowledge as I have only had the car a year, has never been replaced. Thanks in advance!
Great work, Alex and Team! Can you provide the link to the Topdon scan tool, please?

Great job! What was the total cost of your repair?
Alex gone get you right 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
A Dodge dealership wanted 1500 to replace a battery cable. 😳😂😂 went to auto zone bought a splice cable 20 bucks. Worked just fine.
Alex, my friend has a 2014 Jeep grand Cherokee with the pentastar engine and the starter went bad on it. How hard is it to replace? I don’t have access to a lift so I would have to do it with jacks and jack stands. I saw a few videos of people replacing them but they all have lifts. I’d appreciate your feedback, thanks.
I had one that only lost coolant through the headgasket to a cylinder, No oil in water or water in oil. But if you simply put the cooling system pressure tester on, it would build pressure in seconds while engine was still stone cold to the touch.
when you checked the radiator by removing the upper hose why didn't you drain from below either the lower hose or the petcock? why spill that stuff all over the pulleys n belts ? just asking thanks
Sadly I’ve been the inexperienced dealer tech put on jobs I had no clue how to troubleshoot and I’ve had my share of misdiagnosis in the past. This industry needs to change its ways and find a way to progressively build techs skills gradually and confidence rather than throw them to the wolves on flat rate and get pissed off at them to the point of harassment when they fail to do a job accurately they weren’t trained or qualified to do. Day one as a GM dealer tech fresh out of school and lube pit I was dropping transaxles out of Cadillacs and 8.8 axle ring and pinion gear replacements without any mentoring training or supervision till they come back with a
dreaded “howl “😵💫. And this was in 2012. It’s just a bad situation happening in the industry all around at the moment.
I agree with you on most of the video. What I do not agree on and I really hate seeing it is when shops use Dormon parts. You should be using factory parts or high quality aftermarket parts but not Dormon parts. Dormon parts should only be used as a last resort. (IE: no factory support or high quality support.). I would sooner my vehicle sits idle for a week while waiting for the high quality parts then using Dormon parts.
YUGO. That’s what the orange car in background is. Parents had one. Literally the bare bones of a car. Turn signals and a opening for a radio. That’s it. Had fun with that hand break though.
Ford Fiesta, earlier than a Yugo GV.
Please do a video on that gorgeous D2 in front of the dodge Durango in this video
How much did you charge for all that work? What would be the cost to replace the oil cooler? Including new intake seals?
I stumbled on your video and i made me realize that I can do the same test. I have the same problem and I think I should do that test . 🙏
Do it! You can rent the tester from Auto zone. But get the fluid from Napa or Harbor Freight. There is a tutorial on my channel as well.
What about the heater core? Was it replaced or flushed?
Alex, Rainman Ray channel needs your assistance with the pentastar engine dealing with the cam phasors and cam shaft's. I mentioned your channel in his comments that you and JT the online mechanic has tons of the 3.6 pentastar experience
Nice scan tool. Is it expensive and of good quality?
The orings between the two halves of the oil cooler fail and cause the mixing of oil and coolant
Ok. @7:28, I paused.
I'm trying to learn auto mechanics on my own to save thousands... I plan to keep my Otima as long as possible.
So, another way Oil can contaminate coolant is usually the head gasket, however, it can be the piston damage right?
How did the oil get into the coolant?
Commenting early when borescope getting put up. The oil is most likely from messy techs changing filters over the year. I’m gonna go with the rare failure of the oiler cooler losing the middle of the gasket that goes around oil and coolant entryways. Coolant mixing with the oil in the oil cooler passageway. I’ll be wrong I know it but I’ll guess honestly.
I did a Dorman oil filter bout 8 months ago car been running great . It is loud though like in the video
Nice Fiesta
Just a follow up question, what made you decide on the scanner that you did and what scanner did you have before. had you not gotten the one you did how many did you evaluate?? thanks for and time you can spend on this.
To be honest, I’m an Autel guy. That’s my favorite brand. I was just trying something new with the is one but I prefer Autel
I'm 74 years old and still do diagnostics and my old scanner is (10yo) not up to the job, the price of the scanner on amazon is great for a upgrade for me as it appears to be a great alternative to the the more expensive system considering my limited need at this point in my life . My wife and I are traveling south, I'm in upstate NY, and are going to a family reunion in Sumpter SC this summer, would like to take you and a +1 to lunch and trade stories if you'd like, let me know!
That sounds amazing me and my wife would love that
Question, can that scanner get into the locked TIPMS on newer Chryslers? I'm looking for something in addition to my Snap On scanner
If you’re looking for a sidekick to your SnapOn Scanner, I’d go Autel!
What camera u use sir, don't see it in your link?
what ruins dealerships is making techs diagonise problems under a strict time shedule so everyone is just rushing to push it out the door
The man said he’s gon run the test! No guessing!
Every time!!!!
I WISH you were closer so i could take my car to you. So many issues. Im here in Charlotte, NC. Do you have anyone here you would recommend?
Hey Alex, my question is what do you do with the blue fluid if you don't have a blown head gasket. Do you reuse it or dispose it?
I Dispose it .
How much do you mark up your parts?
First mistake is taking it to dealership. I only take it to them while new under factory bumper to bumper. After that I never take it back. They call them stealerships for a reason.
Oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure leaking cooler oil will get into coolant.
My girl has overheating problems in her jeep and def gon run same process of elimination cause honestly I thought was trashed
No heater core?
A dealership is the least competent set of eyes you can have on your car. They hire the first person that shows up. There is no integrity at a dealerships, they lie, cheat, and steal by design across the board.
Genuine question if you don’t mind. Where is ur shop located? Genuine inquiry. I have a 19 Edge that ever has horrible drivetrain issues. Under warranty and ford doesn’t wanna acknowledge the issue. Again if it’s too personal don’t stress! Figured I’d give it a shot tho. Can contact me personally if interested in taking a 8F35 for work ! lol
I’m in morrow, ga
