- How to construct a dichotomous key!
This video has been created as a fun and engaging way to introduce to explain and construct both written and visual representations of dichotomous keys with your Science class. It has been designed in alignment with the Australian / Victorian Curriculum for Science learning; this video pertains to ACSSU111 & VCSSU091.
Original illustrations done by Bettina Wright and animated using Doodly (enterprise).

what if its not an equal amount of organisms?
It doesn't matter 😊
thank you this helped me so much
I'm not a biology student. I am a little confused by this idea of making my own dichotomous key. Aren't all these classifications settled? Can a biologist just make up her own new categories? The other thing is this: I divide animals by whether or not they are native to Australia, but then two or ten levels down, I realize that two animals are almost exactly alike, and would be classified as the same or very close species had I split on Australia later instead of sooner. Then what? Thanks!
Yes, these classifications are settled. This exercise is more about guiding people to understanding the concept.
I am trying to make sure I understand your second question. I think the answer to what you're asking is simply that you can always change or optimise how organisms are classified (this would have happened on a large scale when we understood DNA sequences a lot more).
Perhaps a good real world example of their use: I was a medical microbiologist for a while and you could follow a series of lab tests in the form of a dichotomous key and use it to identify the bacterial species .
