I guess we broke his shop? Link is blank. sadly. Ready to pay and print. : )
@@stvcolwill actually Etsy shut it and won't respond, making alternative arrangements.
@@ronedmeades1406 I was wondering, since it's basically making parts for an existing system... which is probably patented.
I still wanted to get the plans.
@@Of_the_House_of_BlackI had this same thought. Bummer. I figured if Tested was willing to share that it was ok with Sortimo
@@almightytreegod 'compatible' is an interesting term and I think in terms of right to repair.
Adam leaving one side of the frame and instantly reentering from the other has convinced me he has developed working portal technology. Seriously-that edit was smooth as butter.
I came here to say the EXACT same thing. That stitch was completely invisible.
7:40 for anyone wondering. I've watched it about a dozen times and it's flawless.
Yes noticed thought I was seeing things, so good cut or able to walk around camera.
No, he has converted a 3D printer into a cloning device. How do you think he puts out so much content, completes so much, and has time for life outside of "the cave". The real question is how many Adam Savages are there?
I can't help but feel so happy for Ron. This is the highest praise you could get for your design, and you couldn't pay for better publicity at any cost. 😊
Well done sir!
Not everyday we get to see Adam so excited about something but this absolutely made his day and possibly his week.
@@davidhawthorne9637Year!
@tested thanks Adam for the compliments and sorry about the thumb drive, you are right I should have just sent a link to dropbox. Glad you found it useful and I hope to see some random prints. Ron.
Great work
If Ron doesn't use the Adam Savage quote "I'm gonna keep my balls in there!" in his marketing, he's missing out. 🤣
A reference to MTV's The State?
@@omarsdroog Not familiar, so perhaps I missed it. But that is one hilarious endorsement.
I believe this is finally what pushed me over the edge to buy a 3d printer. I could easily see myself printing 5 of these mini sorters for my wood turning tools and accessories.
Adam changed his ways (replaced the mill) and now found his bearings... steady on course.
Transition @7:43 was very subtle but very satisfying.
Looks like he teleported, and yes I have to agree it was very satisfying
Well said. Great editing
I came here to say this! Great editing!
"Du-ude!" -the highest possible compliment.
I work in a hydraulic repair shop and we store all sizes of Chrome Steel Balls for check seats, I would highly recommend storing them in oil as they do go rusty eventually which makes them unusable. We literally add oil into these type of containers to submerge them completely and they last forever, just don’t drop the container!!!
Omfg that edit at 7:40 is just mint
RIGHT? He's developed portal technology!
I love how Adam is like a kid on Christmas with Ron’s version of the Sortamo boxes.
The manic joy in Adams eyes as he said "Im gonna keep my balls in there"
The labling is just brilliant. I wish every bits sorter had that
Wait till Adam hears of Gridfinity!
Basically 50% of the viewers probably screamed "gridfinity!!!" at the screen halfway through the video.
He knows about it.
I remember a quote: "Organization will set you free" I think that was from Alton Brown. We all need to find our Bearings LOL.
As long as you get your Bering Strait all is good with the world.
Ouch! 😂
I feel a sudden need to post a Picard facepalm
In response I do a Willy Wonka oh really image
Thank you Ron! Your present to Adam and his knolling bearings in your plastic creations was just SO satisfying on so many levels.
Dropping the cow was always my favorite way to end a skit. SNL did it when a member of Monty Python was on the show back in the 1970s.
You dropped the cow when you had no ending at all . A terrible dad joke blackout is at least something.
Nothing get me more excited than watching Adam get excited about things. The passion in this man has inspired me since Mythbusters day 1
Excellent showcase of audience Talent, I think you need to connect that guy with the Sortimo team because he has great ideas.
Genius system!! Blue/orange are color compliments, and Green/Red are color compliments. Green and orange are U Miami colors!! My stomping grounds.
The IT guy in me is so proud with the yeah I'm not plugging this unknown USB drive from a random Subscriber in to my computer. This is exactly how social engineering works. You try and come off as legitimate and trustworthy then use that to gain access or control over someone's equipment. i do love the line about i think i have a sacrificial laptop. That would also be me i wanna know what's on here but I'm going to do it in a safe manor. Also those are some really nice prints and designs. I did check his page out and while the prices are abit high i think its going to be worth it. Ill click the buy next time i have a bit to spend on random things.
I run Linux so I have no fear of removable storage devices.
@@1pcfred Google for "usb killer," to find out about a device that looks like a usb drive, but can fry your board when you plug it in.
Well done. Well thought out additions to sorting system. Specially like double spaced Z axis.
For some time I have bought fishing tackle boxes at a big block store. The ones I have standardized on have movable dividers. I use them for electronics and scale modelling items including paint.
7:40 wow...I had to read the comments to catch this. It was a blink and you miss it moment right there! Brilliant recording
A friend of mine uses a similar box that was inteneded for fishing lures to store/protect/transport his D&D minis.
Love the video, awesome stuff, but I can't NOT mention the invisible cut at 7:42 that melted my brain for about 10 seconds. Well done, editing team!
I think we have a very happy Adam.👍👍
I feel like there’s a losing one’s marbles joke in here somewhere…🤷♂️😹
I got one ready to go.... but I lost it.
To drill a ball bearing - Clamp-it, center punch, Tungsten Carbide drills, slow speed, best use Micro Drill press! :)
I recently found my marbles, when I didn't know I still had them to find, so I know how Adam feels!
Funny that he calls the metal balls "ball bearings" instead of "bearing balls," my Dad was always very adamant that the balls themselves aren't bearings. But it's true that that's what nearly everyone calls them.
Last year, Tom Scott posted a link to a 7-year-old video built around the kind of clever edit that people are talking about, regarding this video. It's called something like "Door" or "Loop" and it's Dutch, I think.
Equally impressive to me is the sound work that's done during the montage sequence. Feels right despite not being sped up or at all in sync. I wouldn't know where, even, to begin!
Just gotta love how Adam loves and appreciates other people's work
the colour combo is awesome
Back in the 80's I would check out Tackle boxes and they came in the same style as those boxes with removable walls.
4:42 - Smells the thumb drive?.... Smells the thumb drive... Delightful.
I share a basement workshop with my step-father and we have inherited tools and bits and bobs from both our ancestors. And while I don't really consider myself a maker we live in a house that is over 120 years old so there is always something to fix. I don't have a need or room for Sortimo grade containers I have that craft stores/dollar stores have things that similar to what the ball bearings came in that are great for the plethora of small brass screws I have. And mason jars are awesome for deck screws.
Finds his bearings, now just has to locate the loose marbles :)
Adam enjoying things is just so, so, so delightful.
Great design by Ron. The orange and green hurts my brain a little. I think orange and blue would be more appealing to the eye. If I had a 3D printer I'd print one up for sure.
Orange and black
Blue and orange are actually opposites on the color wheel - not green and orange.
I printed some for friends, red and black is good, pink and white is the most popular!
Great vid. I appreciated the "Imma keep my balls in here" line, good shop humour. RON - great innovations, well done Dude !
Also, great gift ideas for other dudes with shops.
I remember when my dad let me choose the colors for my room when I was 12. I first told him that I wanted dark blue trim with mid blue walls. I was very offended when he painted his office in that scheme and told me my room had to be different
I chose pumpkin orange walls with forest green trim. It really worked even my dad came to like it.
Such passion for storage devices.
Foam craft sheets from the Dollar-Store are great for keeping the small stuff where it belongs. You DO have to open the lid to see your labels, though.
Can't wait for Adam to doscover Gridfinity.
Take my money, DesktopCNC!
Green and orange are my favorite colours.
I remember making things in video games, like customizing a skateboard with green and orange checkering, and my siblings see it. I'd get the comment: "that looks awful, those colours don't go together", and I'd say: "i know they don't, but it looks good to me.". This followed closely behind saying something to the effect of minding ones business and some sibling bickery.
Don't know why I'm saying this, but the green and orange storage container reminded me of that memory. God i miss those days 😆.
You got some balls Adam!
"I really appreciate you sending all the files... there is no way I am ever sticking an errant thumbdrive into my computer, if you know what I mean."
Good cybersecurity practice. Though you could get a microcomputer (airgapped, naturally) and use that to examine the contents and extract them if desired into known-good storage media in a clean operating system. It's not perfect but I would think it sufficiently secure for a use like this.
To drill ball bearings: 1) Check the hardness. They tend to be pretty well up the Rockwell scale so you may need a cobalt or carbide drill. 2) To hold them, drill a piece of stock about 1/4 the diameter of the ball, all the way through, then taper the hole until about 20% of the ball stands proud of the holder. 3) Press the ball into the taper, then grind a flat on the top with an abrasive burr. 4) Drill into the flat, then use an ejector pin from the back to drive the ball back out of the taper.
I do leather work. I keep a magnet for removing the hardware from the compartments. It would have saved him time swapping those bearings out. I then keep the magnet in a compartment with the copper rivets. System works great,
Agreed. I do it all the time. 😊
But then the bearings would be (slightly) magnetised, which could be a problem
When I was in high school my art teach loved my commitment to projects & their detail, (I was like 6 assignments behind) told me most art is never finished, it is just abandoned at an acceptable point.
Wish my 3D printer was big enough to print the case. These would be awesome to have.
Make a version for kids and sell em, you are welcome
The title reminded me of that ending scene of "The Hook," where Toodles finds his 'marbles' again.
😢
Just a random input.
*-waits for Adam to find his happy thoughts and fly off to Never Never Land-*
The beginning of "The Hook 2.
Balls are found in the macroplastics.
I came to bearings see... and I got a dad joke to boot.
An interesting addition to these would be trays with magnetic bottoms if you want to get real fancy with it
For the small bearings, a silicone or rubber strip attached around the top of those particular trays sealing against the lid would allow the case to turn upside down without spilling.
Those boxes gave me lego sorting tingles
The bearings joke reminds me of Hook where one of the characters 'lost their marbles'
Yep go for in...sort an item in compartments to another bin with compartments!!!
It's his marbles he has a hard time corralling. ;)
You need a magnet to pick them up when moving them in bulk like this.
Never use a magnet to pick up bearings. It magnetized them, and they attract everything and wipe out the races. Was taught this, but still learned it the hard way.
If it weren't for the Sortimo, Adam would love Gridfinity.
at 9:26 - Adam is worrying about the common issue of very small parts (#4 flat washers) tend to find their way into adjacent bins. The solution is to put some fabric over those bins. Problem solved. I use a blue paper shop towel or felt. My two cents.
Glad you were able to get your bearings straight, Adam. :D
The boxes are great, but unless you use very cheap filament, you can probably order a full Sortimo box for a similar price and it will arrive before the first one is finished printing.
@ulaB, costs about $25 to print a full box using ABS or PETG from Bamboo plus hardware and acrylic. Sortimo retail for about $124 dollars without the inserts. Print time is around 24 hours. In one of the other comments I costed it out and have corrected this comment. Ron.
@@ronedmeades1406 what infill percent are you printing them at?
If one alternates big and small bearings it might be easier to find the bearing one has dropped in the wrong bin.
I use a knockoff version of compartmented small part storage boxes, because I am poor and can't afford Sortimo, Plano nor Milwaukee. But I can still find things quickly. BTW, compartment tub dividers, unless you glue them in, cause more problems than they solve.
Your comments about dad jokes reminds me of the UA-camr ScotPropAndRoll. You should definitely get him on the channel, it'd be non stop prop humour.
at 8:31 - Adam is picking up small steel parts (ball bearings) from a bin. I always find it frustrating getting my fingers in there and, in this situation, you can't tip the bin without spilling bearings hitter and yon. SOOOOO, I mount a strong round magnet onto a shaft and insert that into a copper tube with a copper cap on the end. This allows me to magnetically pick up metal parts and, by pulling the shaft/magnet away the metal parts all nicely fall away. My two cents.
Last time I saw you talk about sortimos, I went and looked... but they're *so* expensive. I can't justify buying them, so all my stuff is just jumbled up in a box. I spent a while looking at gridfinity stuff, but it was a little overwhelming, designed for people with a huge amount of stuff to store. There wasn't really a good portable outer box.
These little boxes seem perfect for me!
Always happy when I see an upload
When magnetism isn't a problem, I will put magnets into containers of small steel parts to stop them from jumping between bins.
That is an incredible piece of 3d printing, though I have to wonder what exactly was wrong with the boxes the ball bearings were in before. They seemed to contain them well and had a label on the inside of the lid.
one box better than multiple boxes
Ball bearings go in a restaurant service squeeze bottle with the 'nozzle' appropriately sized.
Well done, Ron!
When he *slap-sl'-sl'-slap-slapped* the box I had to finish the pattern by *slap-slapping* my desk.
Sortimo is #1 for a reason. I would not be surprised that there may be some patents that Ron may be violating. Just sayin'.
And now the listing on etsy is gone
“I want the whole world to be using these!”--LOL, I always knew Adam was targeting world domination at some point😂
And some day he shall call upon his army (of makers) ...
@@tested HaH! Let’s face it, if we’re being honest, most of us are only one good day away from being mad scientists anyways😂!
Compartments need to seal. Especially if you're going to have a handle. I need to be able to walk around/not be afraid of dropping one/knocking one over, and expect everything stay where it is.
This reminds me a lot of Gridfinity!
Wondering what Adam does with the containers that the ball bearings came in. Recycling or perhaps his visitors get to pick through and take them as they leave.
Great work sir 😊❤
I’m glad you found your bearing only if you could find your marbles 😂jk! I have to organize my inserts.
Dude this design is awesome, especially that it interacts with the retail version! I need to get in touch with this Ron! And I will assuming the link is in the description (I haven't yet looked) but I'm really excited about what this could me to my work!
I hope you get in touch with Sortimo and collab to make those a real product. I am going to order 1 or 2 to sort and store all the screws and connectors I use for IT work .
An IT worker that doesn't have access to 3D printing?!
@@Orphioux I work in info and nw security so dont need 3D printers but couple of friends(completely different fields to me and its used for their production related tasks) do own 3D printers. Asking them free time(given size it would be couple of hours) on their printers to get prints for me done would be a bit too much and its easier to order through etsy(source).
I need one of these for my meteorite collection.
Ron is the GD MAN!!!
So, Adam sorts ballbearings from presorted containers into new better containers. 😅 Now all he needs is a small field electro magnet to transfer the ballbearings. 😊
I wish Milwaukee would have taken some inspiration from Sortimo bin design for their packout system.
those would be amazing resin printed i'd imagine...
To understand the music of the spheres. You must have sorted spheres, for then your understanding will be well rounded.
It is in fact, Friday 🎉
@AdamSavage Adam, to keep the bearings (metal ones) from falling out, simply place a magnet in each slot with them.
If you are worried about the small ball bearings migrating into other bins, put a large/powerful magnet in the bin with them. That way, the balls would rather stay where they are. I use this method, and it saved me when a "helpful" friend knocked my open-backed screw organizer.😅
Something tickles that little bit of my brain when I figure out a new, better, way to store my bits and bobs. Somehow I've made that into part of my day-to-day job as a materials R&D lab manager dealing with 5S.
Now all you need is an organization system for your organization system! Which you likely all ready have.
Actually, I designed and built a cabinet, files are included with the download... Ron.
10:21 the term I've heard when this happens and someone makes a call that they have to move on to a new sketch, is that it "got an edit" (this was in Rekha's recent Adventuring Academy episode on Dropout, just a couple minutes in)
Blue is the opposite of orange. Green is opposite of red.
I caught the little Friends reference there Adam 😁
