As a palate cleanser you could then visit Dinant (not too far from Charleroi), one of the prettiest and most picturesque cities out there!
You didnt show us a lot of Lelystad, most of the video is about a shoppingmall and a fakeboat. I saw the agoraheatre, wich I like. And 3 seconds of a tiny part of the shoppingcentre. Its not a way to judge a city. Lelystad is also special for the way they seperated houses, traffic, mainroads and a tremendous amount of green (trees, water, space). Its not ugly at all, but just made for more people then eventually live there so hard to maintain.
Read: Peter Fitzsimon: Batavia Shiprwreck. Murder. Greed. Rape. Lust. Survival. Courage. Honour. Dishonour. Bravery. The story of the ship BATAVIA, wrecked off the WA coast in 1629, is arguably the greatest tale in Australias history.
As ugly as a city like Lelystad may be (de gustibus non est disputandem), as soon as Katrina comes to visit, it turns into Paris by night, New York in the spring. Lelystad was lucky that the weather was nice when you were there. Imagine it in rain and storm. I read somewhere that people in Lelystad (and Almere) are on average happier than people in Amsterdam. And that's not only because of the costs of living. Oh well: You hit the 5000 subscribers! Congratulations, well deserved. We couldn't have done it without you. Only 5000 more and we can watch you guys go skinnydipping in Het IJ. Whoop whoop!
We actually had that thought that if it had been the usually gray and rainy Dutch weather, we probably would have had different thoughts about the city not being ugly. Thanks for being one of those 5K subs! We appreciate it!
Tosti without additional sauce(s), I agree, a good tosti does not need sauce. It looks like the "exposed" statue is doing something that should not be exposed, or is that just me.
I think that most Dutch people find a city ugly when it doesn't have real history. This goes for relatively young cities like Zoetermeer, Hoogeveen, Almere and Lelystad, the things which look old here are replicas like Batavia stad which was only built 23 years ago. But this is also true for cities were the old city centres were heavily damaged or destroyed by the bombings in WW2 (Rotterdam, Heerlen), and remodelling by some brilliant urban planners in the 1960s who wanted to model these cities to the then popular modernist look with wide streets, vast open spaces and lots of ugly buildings, also the car had to have all the space possible during this era.
Spot on. People want the historical city centers maybe to feel more of a connection to the culture of the city/country. But we were able to find some beauty in this young city. Hopefully others do, too! Thanks for watching!
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld There are several reasons why Lelystad is not popular. One is that is difficult to bring 'soul' to a new built place. You may have done all the math right, but still something is missing. Second when Lelystad was founded in 1967, it took 20 years to open the railway link to Amsterdam. (A problem that also hampered the Bijlmer/Amsterdam SouthEast 'Corbusier' burrough in the 1970s, with the metro taking 10 years to open.) There was only one road to the south. And the windswept 'polder' countryside had no real trees. It was almost bare ... And when Almere (closer to Amsterdam) was founded in 1976 , that city would be choice A or B and Lelystad choice C or D ! This made that mostly lower class people moved there for space and cheap rent. But those (mostly Amsterdam) people actually longed for Amsterdam still. People from other places might want to live in or closer to Amsterdam, but 'settled' for Lelystad. There is no Uni/college with young people ... This all makes that people will go to Amsterdam for a lot of stuff. Shopping, clubbing, concerts etc .. Lelystad feels like the 'last stop on the line' .. And finally, related to mentioned above ' : The people have no belonging to the city or the region! They are wannabee/ 'would be' Amsterdammers. To the east , near the German border, there is also an 'unatractive' town called Emmen. A post-war industrial growth town. With post-industrial unemployment. By the 'index' figures scores high as the most unatractive town in NL : Not a historic towncentre, little Culture provisions, mediocre employment, 'far away' from 'other places' (from a Dutch 'Randstad' perspective 😜 ). But the inhabitants have a relation with their town and region and are, in general, quite happy with their town. They feel at home, have a belonging. The Emmen people appreciate the social relations, appreciate the space and nature ( the latter which Lelystad also has !) . They don't go to the 'big city' every saturday ... Emmen people like their provincial home town and score fairly high on 'happy people/community' (unlike most from Lelystad).
When I was born more than 70 years ago, Lelystad did not yet exist. So unlike many other Dutch cities it is very new and created on a blank sheet of paper.
Hahaha, it could be! We just went to Den Haag so it's probably not going to be in any upcoming videos any time soon, but never say never! Thanks for watching!
I love this city! THe nature all around at as like a shield around it, is amaaazing. Still one of my favourite nature areas in NL because it is so different and unique. Oh and the animal park Natuurpark is also nice

I've lived in this city for years and the ugly for me is more that there used to(according to my partner) be a lot of "troubled youths" and we have had situations here while i have been living here of people poorly treating my partner. i've lived in detroit, in sections of new jersey, and stayed months at a time in richmond va and here has been the most noise polluted at any given hour. unless the airport is ever opened the city is jst getting a bit more empty in the centrum so i guess that could make people think it is ugly?
Orange is also the name of the ruling House of the Dutch royal family (the name comes from a city that is now in France and also the last third of the flag of Ireland is for the Protestants who supported William of Orange who was king of England and the Netherlands - also the flag of New York City also has an orange stripe because it was New Amsterdam before it became New York City!).
Lelystad is not bad at all, unless you are young. The town center is quite boring. It has a cinema and a few pubs. Most nice shops closed a long time ago. I guess to much competition from Batavia outlet/coast area which has a decentralizing effect. Like McD is there, but not in town center. Hugh mistake. Lelystad needs more inhabitants, like originally was planned before all focus shifted to Almere. Fortunately, a large city expansion is in the making.
You're probably right. It definitely seems like it wouldn't be the best place for people in their 20s (which we definitely are NOT). Thanks for watching!
In my opinion Rotterdam an Amsterdam is most dirty and ugly in some part of the city, just look little bit out of Main Street and see it for your own self. I was been in most of biggest cities in Netherlands past couple years, and I can say they are most rotten cities afte all in my opinion.
Almere has a similar history, but is slightly younger and went more adventurous and ambitious with architecture and urban planning I believe. Lelystad also suffered from the emergence of Almere. I don't know either of them very well, but I guess Almere has more character.
Lelystad was really rapidly expanding (groeikern) until policy shifted all in favour of Almere, which is closer to Amsterdam. The commute is shorter. (Hardly any jobs in Flevoland at the time and combined with 80s recession.)
Haha, it's another Uniqlo bag - the fall corduroy edition. They're the best. And yes, the art has the nickname 'de poepende man' which you can probably guess the translation of that...
In the 1980's cities were much uglier than they are now. Thanks to ECB the only safe investment the last decades was real estate. In the grand scheme of things this is very bad, but on a smaller scale it's responsible for the beautification of nearly all cities in the Netherlands, which of course is good. By the way central square of Heerlen around the church is quite nice, and even parts of Delfzijl look good nowadays. Not much ugliness left.
I'm not a big fan of ketchup, because i'm from the south (Brabant) and here we usually use Curry (spiced ketchup) on our fries and hot snacks and maybe you could try it with a Tosti, because that's how i always eat them! 😋👍🏻 And i consider my own home town Eindhoven as the ugliest big city in the Netherlands, because it wasn't as severely bombed as Rotterdam in WW2 and it wasn't newly created like Lelystad, but purposely demolished sinds the 60's! 😪✌🏼
It just takes time for new places to develop their own character. Sometimes they get it wrong and then they can just try again when they get a few decades out of whatever it is they built. It took Rotterdam's center a bunch of missteps to finally be as nice as it is today.
I don't think it's ugly at all. Maybe it's something cultural, like in Japanese where "chigau" means both "different" and "wrong". In that culture to be different and not conformed is something unusual and basically wrong.
Neighbourhoods are mostly fine. Nothing special. Problem is the city center I think. People rather go in the weekend to Amsterdam, Almere, Zwolle, Harderwijk or Dronten even.
Maybe Drachten is the most ugliest. People in Friesland have this joke ''how did Drachten got his name? Because Frysians can not spell Gedrocht.'' It used to be a manifacture city for Phillips and there private railroads lay abandoned across the province around 1990-2000 it went in decay because phillips slowly outsourced the everything so its like a small detroit story but dutch, dutchtroit. It looks better now but growing up in the 2000 i remmember it was kinda normal that abandoned buildings were set on fire and stuff. Also the other citys of the provinces basically joke around that Drachten is not a legit city because they never got city rights in medival days. so its just a town trying to act big.
Mann, you're uninformed! Philips hasn't pulled out of Drachten because the factory in Drachten is the, or one of, the most profitable it has in the world?
