  • Watching a Florida alligator gar (type of fish that is NOT an alligator) stalk a ‪@Rapala‬ Skitter walk and got the surprise of our lives in the Florida Everglades!!
You know we're from Cape Coral but, we took a day trip to the Everglades and drove around checking out fishing spots with a plastic ‪@Rapala‬Skitter walk (lure), targeting Peacock Bass. We had spent a few minutes canvassing the water before we began fishing and filming... but gators are stealthy ambush hunters. As soon as he saw our guards were let down, he emerged and scared the sh** out of us!
Yes, we expected to see Gators.
No, we aren't tourists. Believe it or not we were all born and raised in the FL wilds. Just got startled by a neighbor 😆
No, we did not feed, touch or harass this gator.
Yes, to your last question. Just yes.

You know what's really scary? If you know where to look you can actually see the gator at about 0:05 seconds in. It's actually not staring at the girls/camera at all, but at the guy fishing, then turns its head to look over at the camera and then reposition for optimal striking distance. You can see the slightly paler outline of its mouth as it moves its head. Opportunistic predator in action.

I have seen 12 to 15 footers out there but as long as you keep an eye out for them and don't harass then you will be ok .
Was at a park in coral springs fishing and a gator was off to my left by the walking bridge about 15 feet from me when these kids syarted throwing rocks at it .
I told them not to do it but they ignored me and came down by men then one hit it ij the head with a rock and it came running right past me chasing the kids who ran all over the place .
It then turned around and walked right pass me then swam out into the lake .

It was like some dinosaur from the distant past. I was crossing Chevelier Bay on my way to Possum Key where I planned to camp when I saw the beast swimming not 25 yards from my boat. It was considerably larger than my boat. I’d estimate it to have been 18 feet and over 1,000 pounds. It was quite a reptile.

When I was young and foolish. A buddy and I swam across a very large canal to hunt for shruums in a cow field. We jumped on a culvert that size on the far shore, chasing big fish out of it. Explored the field, came back and we're looking at tracks in the mud before the needed swim back across the canal. Saw a 6 inch gator track We figure that's a 5 footer. My buddy is talking all bravado. Then we see a larger track. A track that wasn't there when we first crossed the canal, as in less than five minutes ago. Putting my large hand in the very deep track there was still about 6 to 8 inches. Now we are thinking about a 14 foot or larger gator. Suddenly, that dark water that we had no choice but to swim, looked very different!

One year I was in Louisiana for a summer vacation with my dad. Seeing all the sights he saw when he was younger. It started to rain and the family we were staying with let me borrow an umbrella to go for a walk. I found an old train car flatbed that had been set across a canal to let farmers onto the field so I figures I'd step out onto it out of curiosity. I knocked a few small pebbles into the water and instantly there were bubbles. A moment later a gator surfaced, looked at me for a moment, took in a deep breath and submerged back into the muddy canal. It was the color of a McDonald's iced coffee. Or milky hot chocolate. You couldn't see through it to save your life. Needless to say I stayed the F away from all bodies of water in that state unless otherwise stated that it was safe water. Even then my eyes were peeled.

FL or not, situational awareness and critical thinking will keep you out of alot of trouble being an oblivious dumbass will get you in big trouble/6feet under.
example... a woman almost died from a water moccasin (sp?) bite, because she decided to jump in a pond without paying attention... (to people or looking around), she got bit and was VERY lucky a fish and game fellow was able to get her help... her husband was screaming about killing the snake for trying to murder her on and on.. its a wild f-ing animal.. and she swam within 2 feet of the pads it was sunning on and hunting fish from.... (they are fun to watch and dont generally approach humans...generally...but she got close enough it saw a threat so.. yeah..), also seen a few times people nearly got mauled by bears by... not paying attention... mind you, these bears are... more like big dogs in how they act most of the time..but around huckleberry season is also when they tend to have cubs, if you want to pick berries, you need to pay attention and avoid bears, even some mother bears wont show aggression unless they think your a threat to them/the cubs, but some will charge at sight of a person too close, again thankfully enlarge, they dont attack people..and will move away if humans get loud and move alot, but theres always that one idiot you see who damn near get themselves killed at least once if not several times in a single season... genuine "whats wrong with your brain?/do you even brain? type stuff... one gal ran for over a mile after the bear stopped chasing(pretty fast, it sat down and just looked at her dust trail like 'hot damn, that one could move' and went back to eating berries... her husband went after her on foot... came back having passed more then one mile marker... and... i heard him lecture her about watching for and avoiding bears, the idiot woman pretended to listen/pay attention/understand and... clearly had not at all... or was just that dumb-stupid... could be either honestly... i saw that more then a few times in my youth..im sure its gotten worse... people seem to lack the skills needed to survive in the real workd these days even mroe then the 80-90's when i was a kid/youth... and some people i grew up with... couldnt make easymac without f-ing it up...

I live in Florida and there is a large freshwater reservoir near my home where I have lived all my life. At the park where the body of water is located there is also a disk golf course that is quite popular. I don't play disk golf but I like to ride my bike on the trail that loops around the lake. One day I was riding by one of the early holes on the course, one in which many people lose their disks due to the design of the course. There were two men waist deep on the water probing the bottom with their feet in a attempt to recover the disks they lost. I almost didn't say anything but decided they may have been from out of state and didn't know any better. I told them that I wouldn't advise that as there are several large alligators 9 foot plus that I have seen in the last few months near where they were wading around. I was assured that it was fine, they knew what they were doing and to mind my own business. I said ok, and finished my ride and went back home. A few days later there was a article in the news paper about a man that had been seriously injured in a alligator attack at the same park. Not only that but the article said that the guy was bit once sustained a minor injury then decided to go back in again, at which point he received a more serious injury which required hospitalization. True story, I am a Florida native and won't go in lakes at all I would advise that you don't either!

My family has property in the swamps of SW Mississippi. I remember fishing behind the camp and regularly seeing alligators. As teenagers, we thought it was fun to feed them food scraps. This went on for many years and the gators started associating our presence with food. It got to the point that when we fished, they would grab the fish from the line. If we did manage to reel the fish in quick enough, the alligators would give chase and stop at the water's edge, which was a few feet from where we stood. They had zero fear of people and became so brazen that we had to start whacking them on the head with our fishing poles to make them retreat At the time, they were 3-5 ft. When those same alligators grew beyond 7-8 ft and started building nests on the banks near our fishing spot, we finally took notice of the potential danger. Most of us had children of our own and stopped fishing there altogether. My grandfather peddled fish on the side and continued to do so after he retired. I'd go with him to run his lines. We always knew which gators we fed because they would linger around the boat, waiting for us to toss them a small fish. Looking back, if this had been public land, we'd have done an injustice to the alligators by taking away their fear of people and they most likely would've been killed. As much fun and entertaining as it was, I wish we would have left them alone.

When I was 11 I lived on Fallon in palmbay with a dam behind my house that I'd imagine reached atleast 30ft deep at times with a fuckload of gators and gar in it. On a particular day my mom went to work and told me to stay away from the dam. Ofcoarse I grabbed my rod and headed there as soon as she left. I was the only soul back there. I was standing at the top of a very steep hill (almost verticle) along the bank trying to hook some gar. There was bout a 10 foot gator lounging in the water right in the middle of the damn where I was fishing. Suddenly I lost my footing & slipped down the hill into the water. My rod disappeared, I couldn't swim & and the ground was nowhere to be found with my feet. The first thing I did was look back and didn't see the gator anymore. The wall was too steep and muddy to climb out so I grabbed a root and it came out right in my hand. That was the worst feeling in the world. I thought I was a goner for sure. Right as I began to scream for help this older rebel who people looked down upon named TJ came out of nowhere, extended his arm and yanked me out of there. Every time I've revisited this memory I wondered how the hell he even did that. The hill had to be 8 to 10 feet high from the water. And where the hell did he come from right on time? Heaven sent. It just wasn't my time yet.
