Beautiful radio. The DX 160 was my first communications receiver. Loved the radio and the appearance. Only problem was how it drifted as it warmed up. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
I still have my DX-160 w/speaker, in very good condition with the box. Bought new summer of 1979 with money from my first job. Provided many hours of enjoyable listening.
This radio was the dream of many young SW listerners. They saved up to buy this model. I purchased a refeurbished one in excellent condtion recently. It performs very well. Im 66.
The Realistic DX-160 radio has a dissimilar metal problem on the tuning printed circuit board with the rivets that connect the top side printed circuit to the printed circuit on the bottom side of the PC board. Resoldering is not sufficient, the fix is to solder jumper wires on the top side of the board to replace the connection made by the printed circuit on the bottom side. Shining a bright light through the bottom of the board shows clearly where to solder the jumper wires on the top side. This is the RF amp and Local Oscillator circuit so it will require alignment. Operation without repair may be intermittent.
I have the same radio in similar condition and with speaker . They work well but the audio is very restricted and harsh . Mine has had the popular audio mod which helps a bit bit still not great . They are so attractive and well built though . I find it good on ssb and quite stable compared with my tube radios . Thanks for sharing ...
Radio Caroline are now broadcasting legally on 648 KHz AM from Orford Ness from different studios and once a month from their radio ship Ross Revenge moored in the River Black Water Essex when they change their ID to Radio Caroline North which is also relayed by Manx Radio. I couldn't make out what frequency you were on - This may be a documentary they recently put out on Radio Caroline North or maybe it was a Pirate Broadcast by somebody else. There is an very nice radio. The DX 160 is also very good radio for medium wave reception. But on higher bands you got some problems with the spurious reception.

This is an excellent review. The DX160 is the perfect size. The settings can be changed without knocking it over.
Very nice kit. Reminds me of the golden years of Radio Shack when I was young.

All that internal work...but painted the wrong color.
