Poor Janet. As a Mom who had a horrible birth experience several times over, I sympathize with her and just wanted to hug her neck and tell her it’s going to be okay. Looking in to those big velvet eyes and the tears under her eyes broke my heart. That baby was beautiful. Janet, my girl, you did great.
That is a truly heroic effort to save poor Janet. My goodness! And then onto another heroic effort with Luna. You vets don’t ever give up. It’s truly inspiring. So what happened to Luna??
I hope Luna is doing well and Allison having a namesake is pretty awesome. Those ladies are both strong women. A cow uterine prolapse is heavy enough but a camel's is heavier. I love how Scot tells the owners their pet is a bit overweight. He's so gentle when telling them. 🙂❤
Wow, what a show!! That poor pup that was hit by the car really had me going. Wish they would have shown the end of what happened to Luna. I know she will be in the ICU Hospital for a few weeks Dr. Alex said, but, I wish they would have shown what happened.🥺 Love the Koala’s and seeing their joeys. What a team effort to get it all done, even with the camel.💗 Love seeing England and Dr. Scott’s practice and his variety of patients.😊
I'll never forget reading about a new vet in the 1930s who was faced with a cow who had 'lost her bed', i.e. had her uterus out after giving birth. An old and very experienced vet taught him to use sugar - yes, SUGAR - sprinkled on said uterus to make it shrink down almost completely, so that it was much easier to put it back in, and they used bottles of water to replace the 'horns' of the uterus. The cow went back to having more valuable babies without any problems at all, while the calf that had caused the 'bed' to come out got her colostrum and survived to become another much-needed source of income for the farmer. Old ways may not necessarily be the worst...
Thanks for sharing this information. How interesting to use sugar to shrink the uterus. An amazing technique. Farmers had/have to be vets themselves because vets were so far away from where the farm was. Nowadays vets are much closer but farmers still know tricks that help their animals. So cool!!😊
@@jeanneamos9365 Actually no, it was Vlimmen, a Dutch vet in the southern part of the Netherlands. Fascinating stories, not translated as far as I'm aware. He also took 'sharp' out of a cow, i.e. in this case a peeling knife. Cows were given the peels of vegetables as extra feed in those days. Again, not at all a bad idea! He cut part of a rib out to get to the stomach to get the knife out, thereby saving the cow's life, and this cow was the only one these very poor people had. He gave the rib he'd cut out to the farmers wife and told her to make broth out of it. Broth out of a live cow!
Sugar is still used today! I've seen it used in reptile prolapses, and in mammal wound care - the stuff is magic. It draws out fluid, prevents infection, and encourages tissue healing in wounds.

First thing we do with prolapsed uterus is rinse thoroughly and pack in sugar. Plain white sugar. It helps reduce the swelling, so the uterus can be re-inserted easier. Partially filling uterus with antibacterial flush helps it to fall back down into place. Then vulva is sewn partially closed. They can still pee and the flush will gradually drain out.

The baby only has milk at that age. But it didn’t need the bottle rammed down its throat like that. It would have latched better if they were gentler about it.

Are there any current updates with regards to Luna? If so, please post on here I cried my eyes as I watched it and really wanted to see how it turned out.
Couldn’t they do a hysterectomy on Janet the Camel? Bless the both of them what a traumatic birth. After the prolapse surely Janet would have the same thing if she ever has more calves???
She had already lost massive amounts of blood (needing to replace 20 liters of blood with IV fluids since no blood transfusion is available is a MASSIVE amount) so any further cutting and blood loss could very well kill her. The camels are in a remote location, where they do not have anesthestics, intubation supplies, or the necessary surgical equipment available, especially a cauterizing tool to minimize any further blood loss and anesthetic to fully knock her out. The uterus is one of the most vascular organs, even more blood flows to it during pregnancy. They may be too far out to retrieve any of the equipment. They also can't risk moving her at all, even to get a sheet under her or straw or anything even remotely more sterile in this remote location so surgery would pose an even larger risk for uterine infection and potentially sepsis. Between all the different factors I think doing a full hysterectomy, it would be very unlikely that she'd survive unfortunately. Replacing the uterus (as long as they can) flushing it, and giving strong/IV antibiotics has a decently high success rate for survival in cases like this as long as they get to it in time and can supplement the low blood volume with IV fluids so her blood pressure doesn't drop to a point where she can't circulate. She may/hopefully will never have more calves, but will survive this way. I'm glad the vets were able to help her, poor mama must have been in so much pain and shock and sick with the blood loss.
If a prolapse is taken care of correctly, it does not mean it will happen again. Do not know about this case, but a few internal stitches can keep it in place.
Not usually, they stitch the thing in place so they can calve again. In cattle though if it happens twice, they're done breeding and go to the burger factory.
She had to stay in the hospital for awhile before it was safe for her to have surgery. Sometimes the bone shards don't have a good blood supply and don't live, then they have to come up with another plan. They also wanted to deal with the wounds that had gravel in them and deal with any infection before doing the surgery on the broken bone.
Lots of respect for good vets need to be given especially when a dumb pet owner comes in. Stacey, owner of Reggie (the Jack Russel Terrier X) new immediately it was the treats for the cause of her dog’s chubbiness but instead of curbing the treats she carried on until her dog got seriously injured. Dr. Chris gently admonished her with a smile about that. I would’ve reprimanded her angrily. 🤦♀️😄
Pretty sure the small amount of extra weight as Chris put it wasn't the only cause for the dogs injury. Just like humans extra weight doesn't help anyones health. Some owners esp those who suffer from obesity tend to overfeed their animals , thinking it's love & affection. Boundaries an rules are something animals learn like humans do so if an owner doesn't exercise restraint with food , set rules an boundaries it's a fair assumption their pet will be the same. It's ignorance , but instead of calling the owner dumb , literally we can take it as a teaching moment about health , an boundaries. Name calling doesn't help anyone ever. Education does.
@@cherylsefton415 agreed. Dont need to call the women names, sometimes people just don't understand how severely weight gain can harm animals, especially smaller ones. When we gain extra fat it isn't too good for us, but animals certainly suffer more from it by comparison. A lot of people also don't realize how much 3lbs overweight is on a dog- for us that's nothing, but for a small dog or cat that can be 1/4 its body weight. Its basically like if I had gained an extra 30-35lbs (from around 130 going to 165), but not a lot of people are going to think like that.

Are there any current updates with regards to Luna? If so, please post on here I cried my eyes as I watched it and really wanted to see how it turned out.
Wish someone would give the baby camel a bottle. It'll be awhile till mom will nurse him.
They did get milk from the mother and give it to the baby in a bottle before the 5 hour limit.
Who else sings the song from the beginning to their pet every time?
So do the non-breeding koalas get vasectomies? And is Luna going to be continued since it looks like she'll be in the hospital for a bit?
Oof, I feel bad for the camel
Tim ❤️koala🐨
Regs owner should not be feeding a small dog like him that kind of food.
Please, please let Stacy have another dog called Ronnie! 🤣
I’m so scared for Tim and the Koalas 🐨
Omg That Poor Dog!! Got run over By A car. 🐕😭😭😭😱😱🚘🚗
Farmers around here feel the tummy…
Wish they showed how Luna did after her oporasion.
What happened to Luna the year old pup that was hit by the car?
