Three Things You Might Not Know About the Blackcap:
Monogamous Birds: Blackcaps are mostly monogamous birds, with many individuals thought to have one partner for life. The male attracts the female blackcap to his territory by performing a song and dance, which includes raising his black feathers, fluffing his tail, and flapping his wings.
Nesting and Fledging: Blackcap chicks leave the nest around 11 to 14 days after hatching and are known to fledge the nest as soon as they can fly. The chicks are cared for by both parents for a further 2 to 3 weeks after leaving the nest.
Migration and Wintering: Blackcaps are primarily summer visitors to the UK, arriving in the spring from Germany and northeast Europe. However, there is an increasing wintering population of blackcaps in the UK. In autumn, breeding birds depart for southern Europe, and they are replaced by blackcaps from central Europe. The presence of bird feeders in British gardens has helped blackcaps evolve a successful new migration route and wintering strategy.
