    The impressive thing isn't that you built a gearing system that could convert the reasonably small amount of torque the engine produces into lifting 1kg. What is REALLY impressive is building a machine with loads distributed across the pieces enough that the flimsy plastic Legos could handle it. THAT is truly impressive!

      Mr. Bennett To be fair, LEGO are pretty durable. But then again, you don't test them on 100kg everyday.

      @inox1ck 6 років тому +5

      Electric motors are impressive but for a winch you don't necesarilynneed a motor with very high power to weight ratio. Its the gear ratio is the key not the motor. You would better use a 300w motor, tin can size, which weigth 1kg and is very rugged with good bearings rather than a motor like I have on my longboard that is weighing like 500g and has a 64mm diameter witj 100mm in length and can output 2.7kW which is 10 times more powerful. Well that is were E motors become impressive. I bet your winch motor doesn't produce more than 300W. Trifase Asincronous motors like those on tesla cars, also produce a lot of power, even more than permanent magnets (neodymium) ones,.
      At the contrary, this video shows how a crap motor can produce a huge final torque/force.

    • @EETechs
      @EETechs 6 років тому +3

      Actually, the electric motor rating is the rating where it does not burn up - it's 24/7 rating. Electric motors can actually increase their torque and horsepower well beyond their contiuous rating when they become over loaded, but if left in this condition for too long can and will result in a motor burn out.

      yes. The weight the motor feels is not 100kg! :). I don't know how to follow the calculations from the top of my head, but it's all about the pulley system - it's that system that is loaded. Pulleys here in this build cuts the real weight in half many times over :). Not that the build wasn't impressive, I'm not saying that at all. And tho the pulley system makes it very easy for the motor, the wire still has to do it's job.
      We used to pull up large tree roots from the ground after cutting the tree down using a pulley system from root through pulleys and to the car. :). Being careful not to snap the wire tho and kill someone :D

      That's just the gears that increase the torque, gears are everywhere not just in Lego.

    It's good to see you went through so many failures but didn't give up. People also forget that you had to set up the camera as well store those tests every time, which is a lot of work too

    Make this with a pneumatic motor. 40Rpm And 400KG

    • @NargaDestroyer
      @NargaDestroyer 6 років тому +67

      The motor didn't fail, it was the structural integrity of the parts that were the limit. The plastic Lego uses is not intended for that kind of stress.

      Perhaps next summer (because now it's snowing here in Finland) I can find enough large rocks and lift them off the ground. It will be only about 1 millimeter off the ground which may not be that impressive demonstration, but anyway. Might be still fun. :)

    • @Sapple498
      @Sapple498 6 років тому +16

      Alex Novotny The problem with this isn't that the motor can't lift enough mass when geared down enough, it's to make the structure strong enough to allow the motor to lift 100kg.
