Things have changed so much in the last 25 years. We use to get uncrowded waves everywhere and periscopes was never crowded. Usually 9 out of 10 days you could surf by yourself. You could score Bingin with nobody and just a few guys at uluwatu and drive dirt tracks to get everywhere. My mates and I realise we were very very lucky to have been able to score and experience such an amazing place with amazing local people. We have been to Indo sometimes twice a year every year. The last 5 years have seen the place get out of control with crowds. Luckily we have found new places to surf away from the crowds. But cant see those places lasting long. Will always love Indonesia.
There are loads of places but you would probably need a local guide to show them to you. A lot of places you now just have to luck it with the crowds. I didn't bother to head to lakey last year because a mate just came back as I was about to go and he said there were literally 100+ guys surfing it. Don't get me wrong the place is still magical with lots of amazing surf spots but you need to search.
I was there about 30 years ago! It was a walk to get there from Lakey Peak but magical and empty. Cannot believe those crowds. So many happy memories of great waves, people and a sense of beautiful isolation - it took some getting there from Bali which some of us were trying to escape even then. Happy days with Aussies, Japanese , French and me a Brit. One love
Yes but you are referring to Bali (in reference to Uluwatu and Bingin) Not Sumbawa - completely different island.. That might confuse some people. Not surprised Bali is crowded these days. But there are plenty of places to go in Indo to surf and escape the crowds. Just need to venture off the beaten track a bit. Sumbawa used to be nice when I went between 2001-3. I guess lots has changed since then. Still, have such great memories :) People explored a lot more in the 70's and 80's. Maybe, with the demand for the same spots so high, those who try and make their own adventures will have the better time. Best wishes to all, stay stoked.

Is there anywhere in Sumbawa still relatively uncrowded?
