  • No first-time visit to Oahu is complete without a stop at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Site, and we're headed there with Fly Shuttle & Tours, which was part of the Go City Oahu pass program. Join us as we snag an authentic Hawaiian breakfast, head to Pearl Harbor for some exploration, then wonder where the heck our city tour went!! :P
    Find Go City Oahu on the internet machine here: gocity.com/oah...
    (Over three days in Honolulu, we used the pass for the Ka Moana luau, Pearl Harbor tour, Makani catamaran, and Polynesian Cultural Center admission. This is not to be confused with the "Go Oahu Card" which is a real thing, but we didn't check that one out.)

    It's time for our first adventure in Hawaii! We're starting on Oahu with three nights staying at the Doubletree Alana Waikiki Hotel in Honolulu, then boarding Pride Of America from Norwegian Cruise Line for a seven-night cruise around the islands. We were in Honolulu from June 1-4, 2022 and sailed from June 4-11, 2022 out of Honolulu with stops in Kahului (Maui), Hilo (Hawai'i), Kona (Hawai'i), Nawiliwili (Kauai), with a scenic cruise along the Napali Coast... let's do this thing!

    Thanks for filming at Pearl Harbor! My Dad was a survivor and told me so many stories of how he survived the attack! I have it on my bucket list to visit!

    Been to the Arizona and Pearl Harbor twice. As a USAF veteran and who had a father serve in the Merchant Marines during WWII the Arizona is hallowed ground. Very emotional and humbling

    Thank you for bringing back memories, we stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, it was great for our children, they were smaller and it was a very safe place. We did all the tours from there. Pearl Harbor, Polynesian Cultural Center, city tours, etc. We were there ten days and then moved on to Maui for another week, then to Kauai. Great trip, our kids still talk about it.

    As an Australian visiting memorial I I I found it very moving. The one thing that stuck in my mind was the fact that Elvis Hawaiian concert raised a majority of the money for building of the memorial.

    I’m not a travel agent like Dee, but whenever we travel abroad we pick up a travel guide at our local Barnes & Noble so we know what we want to see ahead of time and tips for visitors. When we went to Hawaii we had no trouble visiting the Arizona because we reserved it early.

    Excellent preview to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. Looks like almost an all day stop to do all of including ferry out to the ship. Seems like it would be emotional. Even going to Viet Nam War memorial was emotional war. It was my dad’s 3rd war and he was decorated there. Thanks take a box Kleenex I guess for Pearl Harbor. Like you I thought there would be more the tour company was offering.

I teared up several times and the most notable was when we viewed all the submarines that were lost. I had no idea so many subs had gone missing. It really touched my heart. You really missed out with the USS Arizona but if it makes you feel better that day before booking thing is a joke. Tried it twice and both times all the times were gone in 10 seconds. You did the right thing just getting in the stand by line. We ended up just going over early in the morning and waiting in line and we got in on the first boat.

    I remember we tried to book a tour to Pear Harbour from our hotel but it was all sold out. So we just took an Uber there and bought a ticket out there. We got on the Arizona tour no problem that day. I guess we struck it lucky, mind you it was back in 2019. I also really recommend going over to the island, especially if you like aviation stuff, a great museum there.

    So did you find it manifestly different than the Caribbean grossly? Would you say it's worth a 10+ hour flight?

    • @parodeejay
      @parodeejay  2 роки тому +2

      I guess in the fact that you can find comparable volcanic Caribbean islands with waterfalls and canyons and whatnot, say somewhere like Dominica or St. Kitts, it's not drastically different in appearance. The snorkeling is definitely different, with new fish everywhere you look. There's a different feel about Hawai'i as well, with that laid back, no rush vibe, but I guess that can also be found in the Caribbean... "island time" as it were, ha ha... but we've decided to try to make this our every-other-year destination now, since it made such a huge first impression!! :P ~Jay

    Why didn't your tour arrange for your tour of the Arizona??

    • @parodeejay
      @parodeejay  2 роки тому

      This particular tour group doesn't do that, but we weren't fully aware of that until we got to Pearl Harbor. We'll have to research more next time, or make sure to try and get a reserved spot ahead of time ourselves. We'd probably need a full day just to make sure we could make it out to the Arizona properly!!
