In this tutorial, I demonstrate the easiest way to key out, or remove a green screen in Photoshop. The background doesn't have to be green for this method to work though. This method is so versatile that the background can be any color or any shade of gray.
List of Keyboard Shortcuts:
Add To Selection with Color Range Tool: Shift + Click
Invert Selection: Shift + CMD/CTRL + i

omg THANK YOU!
@@Hannah-fy2wx again? Haha
Thank you So Much
thats mean hahahahah
Thanks, I was looking in the comments to see if anyone did this, and I thought that only happened once prob not again. You saved my time thank you.
Oh my, what a waste of 8min - Dude you left the Project half undone, REALLY!
Another helpful video. Thank you Anthony. One question - if I were to get one neutral (grey) background, what product and what shade would you suggest? There are several to choose from so curious about what you'd recommend for someone starting out.
Anthony, your voice tone and tempo set you apart from other instructors. Bravo! I'm grateful for your clear and concise directions. You can add one more loyal subscriber to your list!
Thanks. So I have a multi-color bird (or a mottled color bird, think multi colored owl) sitting on a branch with an out of focus tree/branch/leaf background and I want to cut the entire background out and leave a jet black background with the bird on it. How do I accomplish this?
You need to light the background seperately from the foreground and many strobes have variable output so you can control the amount of light. You want to evenly light the BG and move the subject forward so that they are not picking up so much reflected light from the BG and are only lit by their own light.
Tommy Estridge god damn.
English?
it would be nice if you could make a couple more of these, you really explain PS very well and I still have alot to learn.
I found only canvas backgrounds with folding squares that cast shadows and look ugly, that shrink and crease underfoot. What kind of background do you use? Thank you
Maybe this was mentioned in the comments already but thank you about the green screen. I definitely learned that it's not so practical for photos. However, is it *still* practical for videography? IE do people who make videos and change their background still use green screens? Or is the gray/white still better?
Thank you so much for this! I truly appreciate how you take your time explaining it. I was able to follow along easily! Thank you so much! I have liked and subscribed! 😊
Great tutorial, thank you.
Hey Anthony, Great teaching on how do this. Everything you said, worked 1000%. Great job. Keep it up.
thank you for clear and awesome explanation
Thank you so much! This really helped
Very easy. Thank you!
I thought you would work on that image to remove reflections of green and process. In my experience , after this step I use hue/saturation to remove the green from objects... But in the objects works fine, but in skin looks terrible so I have to use brush tool to try to correct skin areas
Are these global color selections ? If subject has a green accessory similar to background will it also be removed ? Is there not a much easier faster method or plugin available ? Adobe premier video is much more automated for example
Excellent video, no unnecessary info at all :) Thanks!
Wish I watched your video before my last shoot. I was under the impression that a green screen would "help" me more easily isolate an image to work with layers. Got some bad reflections and the green edges are tough to edit out in making selections. Your video is very helpful. I don't have PS, only PS Elements. Any tips there? Thank you again.
Can you do a video where you remove the green from the bag and from her dress? How to Adjust those areas without adjusting the entire image.
Yes, we need to finish the task.
Yes, I just recorded it. Here it is:
ua-cam.com/video/UTt8RgZItME/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing. Also, strobe lights can be powerfull but are of course also ajustables. You don't need to blast your green background just because you can...
thank you I learned a lot
well done, You teaching the basics and details very well.
Absolute legend!!
you sound EXACTLY like sheldon from home movies
Didn't expect to see the I booked a ticket to Japan guy here

I am sure the software is better than it was 15 or so years ago when I played with these green backgrounds. It was more damn trouble than it was worth. These are tough times for professional photographers. I hope you are doing well
After all these years Photoshop still doesn't have one click keying.
Nice content : )
i removed the background but there's still green in the skin.. how can i remove that
Thank you, this is what I wanted!
THANK YOU BRO! Now I can add some flashy thunders into my thumbnails :DDD
Thank you for this quick and easy approach to isolating a subject away from a background. I'm hopeful you can provide a link to a better, perhaps neutral, background to use. I'm having trouble finding and picking one.
Go with a gray background or white, depending on what you're shooting.
2:36 Thank me later
thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!
thanks really annoying having to lsten to 3 minutes of random talking when u justr want to know how to use chroma key
@@laufttv6977 exactly, you’re welcome!
thank you.
how to deselect the clicked area? honestly speaking i didnt use any of those what you said just a quick selection tool and removing background that what I needed but you forgot to add on how to add a background or tone the skin.
Good photoshop work, the comments on green screen are wrong though. I saw in the comments someone mentioned how to properly light the background and they are spot on. This green screen image was not properly lit and you can kill the strobe issue he talked about with better lighting. Also, professionals do in fact use green screen, or blue screens. That is due to the fact that green is easier to key out, one of the furthest colors from skin tone, and much easier for light to reflect off of. The sensors in cameras also are able to pick up the primary colors in much greater detail and anything close to a true green or true blue the camera can catch amazingly well. This means when you go to key out the subject the sharpness will be higher with a green or blue background, whichever color works best depends on the camera sensor. To be clear, real professionals do use green or blue backgrounds, they just know how to handle it in post, grey backgrounds will give you haze around a subject unless the alternate colors in the mask are very very bright.
good explenation
Thanks you so much. it is work
Since you are doing this with Photoshop, why aren't using the best professional-level tools that Photoshop has for keying out green or blue?
02:40 is when he starts to show you how to do it.
now how we get rid off the green tint
thxx
thank u
i can't color range it doesn't allow me
I find my video lights also cause all this colour cast, too! Just use a grey or black background no matter what!
There' so much talking in between points.... Scripts are great.
super
You're so soft-spoken.
2:42
Select >> Color Range
Bit shocked to see how few "Likes" you have!! ~ maybe you have not been around for that long (unless I research I won't know) ~ but judging by this video you are right in the frame and I compliment you on being non egocentric (drives me nuts when people are more concerned about themselves than the topic) ... unfussy, to the point ~ well done keep going ... of to see your color cast video ~ best to you db
well this actually edits out what is inside the mask for me
she is greener than before!
So your kept showing us the bottom of the bag but didn't do anything with it. And what about the dress?
BoSS!!!!
Tutorial starts at 2:35 for those needing it ;)

Unnecessary long video, but it helped me a little
Thanks. You explained that very well. I like your videos because they are short and to the point. I learn new techniques in a matter of minutes.
2:40, get past the fluff!
Tutorial starts at 2:40
it takes you 9 minutes to explain a simple thing, bruh
they man deserves an award. you just saved me so much time . wow i've been doing the same old way since 2010
2:40 Starts
Real video starts at 2:33
This is why I absolutely hate photoshop. There is no "color range" under select on my recent version. This happens almost every time I try to use photoshop.
bro spent 2 minutes and 30 seconds to start the tutorial
Video starts at 2:30 for those who came for the tutorial.
I see only green artefacts...
Jesus fucking christ died so we wouldn't have to wait @2:35 minutes for this video to explain something that could have been explained in 30-60 seconds
this video could be a minute and half...why is it so long
This is great but 2:39 elapsed before any useful information was provided.
can we not avoid the subtitles please? its to precious to not be seen
TWO MINUTES AND 36 seconds to begin tutorial. I would've subscribed if it weren't for that.
it is a waste of time to wacht the whole video you did not even tell how you ken get rid of all the green
Too much talk and slow for simple process
Dude get to the point
omg how slow is this video
So you can't
jesus get on with it
Play it on ×1.5 he's talking really slow
this video could have been much shorter. I hate long tutorials as do most people
Why not just get to the point? could be literary a 2 min video. Thanks anyway.
He might have a better like to dislike ratio if he wasn't so deprecating to most of the viewers he wishes to attract. Just sayin'......
please stop rambaling
Not Nice The Video
too much talking
no talk, just do it...too much talking
All nice, but u really talk to much.....
3 minutes on start wasted. That's not how the tutorials work, man.
please don't overtalk
I usually give good impressions to most of the videos i watched but so sorry, not with this...its a waste of time watching.
Never ever photograph on green screen.
talk to much
2:43 Thank me later
