  • Made in Birmingham- World War II
    Thanks to a great generation.
By 1944, 400,000 Brummies were involved in war work - a greater percentage of the population than anywhere else in the UK. Their efforts have often been overlooked, whilst the sacrifice of those who died has been forgotten. Overlooked and forgotten by all bar the people of Birmingham, who remain proud of the city's role in overcoming tyranny

My grandad "Tom Haywood"was born in Aston, Birmingham. He spent WW2 as an Anti Aircraft Gunner in Brum. My Mama "Connie George" enlisted and was sent to birmingham, she was a bomb girl. It was there they met. I am Their legacy. I am proud. x

My Mom worked on the Spitfires. Something at the factory made her ill, so she became a "clippy" on the trams. Didn't see her fiance "Desert Rat" for 4 years. They didn't seem to moan in those days as much as we do now, strangely.

Amazing. My dad was captured by the Germans in 1941 and mom worked in the factories. How scary.

My mom worked on the bombers. She lived in Smethwick until 1944... saw a lot of bombing and sadness.

I envy the war generation's fortitude. How they suffered, yet repeatedly dusted themselves off and got on with the business of living.

My grandfather (14th Burma) used to tell me things and then change the subject. He taught me enough to know...

I lived in Yardley for my teenage years, there was a lot of racism, and so we moved back.
