Ernie Johnson is a fabulous host, don’t think they’ll ever be a sports host I enjoy to watch more than him. He can handle any news with ease and poise, something that not many others could do. It will be a sad day when he decides to retire.

If it weren't for coach Thompson it wouldn't be no Alonzo mourning, mutombo, Patrick Ewing, and Allen iverson all in the hall of fame
I remember that heat Knick series..coach Thompson was there cheering on both of his boys
The first 3 would have been fine going somewhere else they were too good. AI tho you really can say that for, Thompson was the only one that gave him a chance and being that Iverson was really only 5’11” no NBA team woulda gave him a chance if he tried going right into draft.

Josh Daily Mutumbo didn’t play basketball until he got to Georgetown and he wasn’t recruited he got an academic scholarship and Thompson invited him out to practice and he got better playing against Alonzo

Like he just lost his dad.I remember NOBODY wanted to touch A.I after his legal / blackball issues( despite his immense talent)His mom went to coach Thompson and begged him to give A.I a second chance in LIFE not just basketball.He must feel he owes EVERYTHING to Big John.

I met him at the Vegas airport in the early 90s. I was so happy to see him sitting at a table. He saw the eagerness in me looking at him that when he was leaving, he came over and ask if I wanted a picture with him. One of my best days. Still have my picture.

Shaq's story about John Thompson giving AI a chance when he was in jail and noone was there for him gave me goosebumps. What an incredible man. RIP coach
I grew up in Baltimore and was a huge Georgetown fan because of Reggie Williams and David Wingate, two Baltimore basketball players who played at Georgetown. John Thompson seemed larger than life. The fact that he was 6'9" might have given creedence to what my imagination told me, but nevertheless, John Thompson mattered. He touched the lives of so many Black boys and turned them into Black men. John Thompson saved Allen Iverson's life. What is going through AI's mind now? What about Patrick Ewing? He went from having a storied NBA career to being the emotional, physical, and spiritual embodiment of John Thompson Jr as Ewing is now the head coach of Georgetown's basketball team. What about Alonzo Mourning? What about Dikembe Mutombo? Mutombo is arguably the greatest humanitarian the sports world has ever seen. We will never see another Mutombo. Where did his spirit of giving and selflessness come from? We know the answer to that question. John Thompson mattered.

At age 10 it was the first time that I saw a black man coaching a basketball team....in the 1982 Final Four. I watched in awe and amazement!! Left a profound impact on me. Loved those Hoya teams from 1982-1985.
As a Tarheel Fan I was at that game Classic.
This is why Inside the NBA is my favorite show. Guys know how to read the room well. And every legend that dies they all have some memories with them.
RIP to John Thompson!!!! A real Legend & hero in the black community. I grew up watching so many clips & speeches from him in sports documentaries never knowing who he really was & his value until I got older. If it wasnt for him, there would be no A.I. & countless other stand up black men that he raised. This one got to me & I had to pause & reflect for a few minutes. REST IN POWER TO THIS BLACK KING!

Dc born and raised. John Thompson one of my favorite coaches of All-time . Came to my school one time and spoke to us , excellent speaker. Got to shake his hand and talk to him, tall man. Didn’t see the Pat Ewing era but the Iverson era was my childhood , had everybody doing his crossover . Hoya Grey all day , definitely had the best shoes and gear.

I was born with a heart defect and they rushed me to Georgetown Hospital, they had amazing cardiologists and I owe my life to that institution. Having said that, I grew up in the DMV and was a fan of the Hoyas. I wasn't around for the glory years but the younger generation knew what Coach Thompson meant to DC. Rest in Peace, Coach #hoyasaxa

I grew up in DC also...and I had my 2nd open-heart surgery at Georgetown Hospital, so I know where you're coming from

80's college basketball was the ACC and The Big East ( you can throw independent DePaul in there too).The Big East was loaded from top to bottom.Georgetown, St.John's, Syracuse, Villanova.You had Michael Adams at Boston College,Otis Thorpe at Providence, Clyde Vaughn at Pitt, Earl Kelley at UConn.We all know about Ewing, Mullin, Pearl, Pinckney.So many great teams, coaches, players and rivalries.Big Mondays were must see.These were my ball playing years.Couldnt wait to get on the court after watching Georgetown play.Made me step my defense up and wanted to block EVERYTHING like Ewing.John Thompson not only coached great players, but he molded young men into grown men.R.I.P Big John.

RIP Coach John Thompson. I’ll never forget about the story of him confronting Rayful Edmond, an infamous drug lord, and warning him to stay away from his players. The man held so much power and was respected by everyone.

Coach Thompson made me learn about and appreciate American college basketball, I was 13 when he won his NCAA championship, I became a fan, this from a kid from Canada.

Great man and great coach. Those Georgetown Hoyas teams with Patrick Ewing in the 80s are iconic. Won the National Championship in 1984 and made the Finals 2 other times

Michael Jackson was my favorite player. Georgetown was my team. Sleepy Floyd, Wingate, Broadnax, Dalton, Brown, and Pat. Those were the teams that put them on the map. BIG JOHN - a DC Icon. A basketball legend. May you rest in the land of endless sausage sandwiches!

I will always remember John Thompson not as a coach but as a father figure to all his player. I can relate to this in 1982 . As a student at UNC I was fortunate to attend the national championship game that year in New Orleans. Fred Brown made a terrible pass to James Worthy an course the rest is history. I managed through the game to work my way to the benches. When Brown made that pass everyone was at a fever pitch. What alot people didn't notice John Thompson made a bee line to Freddy Brown not to scold him, but to hug him and tell him that ok we will get them next year. He was embrassing him if it was his on son. That was the most powerful thing I ever seen. This kid probably blowed your national championship and you are holding him. What a man. Thank you Coach Thompson. RIP. By the way say hi to Dean for me . We sure miss y'all .

R.I.P to the legendary coach John Thompson. He will never be forgotten because he put Georgetown University on the map. Georgetown team jackets in the 80's were very popular because of him.

Coach Thompson was the same age as Coach Jerry Sloan who also passed at age 78 this year. Both were excellent coaches and both will be dearly missed.

God I love this foursome. Seriously, I don't watch much basketball but I could listen to this group talk all day about any subject. So well spoken. Just a fantastic group.
I will miss this man. I have been watching and cheering for him and the Hoyas almost my entire life. As a little girl growing up in Baltimore he reminded me of my father. He had a big presence, a great voice, and a contagious smile. There was a joy and a love you could see in the interactions and the many small moments between him and his players. Georgetown and Basketball were lucky to have had Big John for so many years.

When charles barley dies, I'm gonna cry for weeks. He's one of the realest people ever. Yes he's extremely funny and entertaining, but he's on point. He always hits the nail and they down play it most of the time.
