I’ve been wanting one for years! One of the guys I grew up with had one from back in the day. Idk why that Burgundy mist is just awesome! Years ago I had a Candy Apple Model 2 which I regretfully sold.
I bought one of these in 1987 after I got my very first credit card in the mail. Walked straight down to Guitar Resurrection in Austin and laid that plastic down. I STILL HAVE IT. I added a Gibson PAF to the neck position (after I routed a cavity and drilled the necessary tunnel) and a toggle switch. I've owned many guitars in my day, and this is still the best-sounding one I've ever owned. That goes for both the bridge and neck pickups. I just dusted the guitar off and started playing it, which led me to find this video.
Might be an odd question, but what tier were these guitars, in the context of everything else offered at the time? I’m curious about the Model series’s contemporaneous reputation. In the 90s when all the alt rockers and grungers made vintage Fenders and Gibson's the thing again, you could find these on the used rack at GC for like $150 (specifically saw a blue model 2 for that price). These have a straight 16" radius per Charvel San Dimas factory specs (not a 12"-16" compound radius). I don't know whwhere you get the idea these are compound radius?
There was no info on the orig. spec sheets about the radius but IIRC when I did the research I found posts on jcfonline or similar about the early Japanese charvels having compound radii., where some people had measured their necks. I don't have gauges to check myself.
@@mastertheguitar Yeah, they didn't start doing the whole compound radius thing until well into the 90's. It should also be noted that these early Japanese Charvels have the "short" (or "small") Jackson headstock. 🎸
Faaaark, what a great sounding guitar... bloody good vid, thank you. Just subscribed, be nice to see more 80s sounds from this axe. Sexy looking guitar, neck and headstock remind me of a woman’s leg in a dark stocking with a high heel upside down lol
Hot rod red, pointy headstock, that screams Steve Vai on Crossroads: ua-cam.com/video/CqdL36VKbMQ/v-deo.html By the way I didn't know these drop-D toggles were a thing, that's a pretty awesome thing to have, especially if it doesn't mess up with the overall tuning (though I suppose that's why it has a locking nut
They are very cool if setup correctly, the trem stop helps as you can tighten springs so that moving to drop D the trem doesn’t move with the slightly less string tension. TBF It’s not that much of a tension change really.
That's not an '86, it's '87 or '88. '86 has a Kahler trem and a "TM" next to the Charvel logo on the headstock. '87-'88 have a Jackson Floyd style trem and an "R" next to the Charvel logo on the headstock. Nice jam tho.
The Kahler trem has been replaced (as mentioned in the video ;) ) also there was a transitional period where some late 86 models had the (R) on the headstock.

Mark i really miss your long hair
Would that be a soloist style body or what?
tabs for the backing track?
I played 1 ....but i borrowed it....
Whoa 💯🔥✌
Faaaark, what a great sounding guitar... bloody good vid, thank you. Just subscribed, be nice to see more 80s sounds from this axe. Sexy looking guitar, neck and headstock remind me of a woman’s leg in a dark stocking with a high heel upside down lol
In '86 Charvel necks were satin finished with a yellow stain. Is this a US Charvel or a US from Ontario, Ca?

You know how to make it sing nice red hot rocker
i have any on blue
Desperate living, driving me mad
Whats the very first riff you played in the beginning?
At the very start it’s a demo tune I wrote for the intro/specs :) in the actual demo I played a bit of Tooth and Nail by Dokken to begin with.
What song is that riff from ? 3:25
Trividon Unchained by Van Halen :)
@@mastertheguitar thanks for the quick reply
Hot rod red, pointy headstock, that screams Steve Vai on Crossroads: ua-cam.com/video/CqdL36VKbMQ/v-deo.html
By the way I didn't know these drop-D toggles were a thing, that's a pretty awesome thing to have, especially if it doesn't mess up with the overall tuning (though I suppose that's why it has a locking nut
They are very cool if setup correctly, the trem stop helps as you can tighten springs so that moving to drop D the trem doesn’t move with the slightly less string tension. TBF It’s not that much of a tension change really.
Is this the same guitar that Jeff Young played in Megadeth?
Just checked, he played Tom Anderson guitars whilst he was in Megadeth.
@@mastertheguitar Thanks for the info man 🤘
How do you know the year? Mine’s 306185 and I don’t know the year
audiozone.dk/index-filer/charvel-japan-import-guitars.php is good for info
But for the trust rod, what is needed,6 mm or 7mm?
That's not an '86, it's '87 or '88. '86 has a Kahler trem and a "TM" next to the Charvel logo on the headstock. '87-'88 have a Jackson Floyd style trem and an "R" next to the Charvel logo on the headstock. Nice jam tho.
The Kahler trem has been replaced (as mentioned in the video ;) ) also there was a transitional period where some late 86 models had the (R) on the headstock.
@@mastertheguitar Gotcha. I replaced the Kahler on my white '86 Model 2 with an OFR. Had to drill new holes. I replace the nut with an OFR as well. It required a shim.
@@mastertheguitar I tune mine down a half step too. Mine has a different pickup though. I've had a D-tuna laying around for years, I think I'll put it on my model 2 as well. I like those other mods as well. Totally agree with your assessment, stellar quality, great player, excellent tone. What amp are you using? Sounds incredible. Well done.
Yeah such great guitars! I love having the D tuna on there :) takes a wee bit of balancing tuning wise but very handy. Amp wise I run through my Line 6 HELIX
@toonz9971 Yeah, I don’t know when they transitioned to having the cover. The serial on mine is 248xxx which most likely puts it into one of the later produced guitars of ’86, though info is very scarce.
Tengo una igual en negra de los 90 impecable original amo esa guitarra no la vendo
All you need is a kill switch, arcade type.
Kahler's locknut fixes the junk JT6 problem if you have an 86 or an 87.
Why did I get megadeth vibes from the intro
a red sexy rock machine
charvel / fender should reissue those models, they're missing out on a potential market. And not everyone wants to buy the funny coloured evh models.
There is a model 2 being offered..
$500? 2022 these sell for $1000 all day if they are in average condition. I've seen some in Excellent/Mint go for $1200+
Yeah prices have been going up quite a bit since I got mine!
