This guy was not just a Delta Operator, but a legend at the Unit. The fact that he has the humility to compete as a purple belt in a Jiu-jitsu tournament says a lot about his character.
Yeah, I could see his bio for these meets. "John McPhee is an American studying Jiu-jitsu since 2008. Is 6'0" and weighs in at 255 lbs. He is a purple belt. Footnote:He's killed several 100 dirties all around the globe. Good luck"
Sir, as a broken down 56-year old retired and physically broken man, I have all the respect in the world for you. This was a great showing and something to be VERY proud of. Well done!
As someone who only started my jiujitsu journey a little more than a year ago and am just a 4 stripe white belt, I can tell you that you absolutely gave him a run for his money. 5 minutes is an eternity on the mat. Good job, brother!!!
Kudos for stepping into the arena. I STARTED my amateur triathlon career when I was 45 and competed for 10 years till my knees failed me. Us old guys gotta keep hammerin'.
First of all, you did awesome! Great job man. As a former college wrestler myself, I have grappled with judo guys and they are no joke. May I suggest something that has helped my cardiovascular endurance? If you aren’t utilizing the jump rope right now, I promise that you WILL notice a difference rather quickly. You are a legend, Sir… always a pleasure to watch your videos.
John, you’re the soldier that all roads lead to. I first ran into you after Pat was on w Jocko.., as funny as that sounds.., I started that podcast but as soon as I did when I looked at the comments people were talking about how the there was a guy called the Sheriff of Baghdad who once “killed 1,000 people in a night” which was gravely taken out of context.., but the things they were saying about you made Pat look like.., well, Pat. There’s was little content of you back then.., but not long after Ryan Fugit had you on and I became a fan of his through you. I just want to thank you for giving your story so freely and staying true to yourself these last 13 years…and for doing Combat Stories when you did. It’s good to see you competing and still living life doing what you love.
Check out his content with Ryan Fugit. Learn about the Mr. Goodbar test. Without Combat Stories a lot of these military podcast wouldn’t have been thought of.
Good work! As a 54 year-old man who's let himself go, (particularly over the last 53 years), I feel inspired to start doing a few press-ups every day, just in case!
Mad respect to both men, they are both legends in their countries. They both had to hold back because they both have moves that would not be allowed in Jujutsu. I would pay to see both of these men fight in the MMA. Please keep in mind John is older and as dangerous as ever, both are amazing men!
Good luck next weekend at Worlds Shrek! Fellow purple belt here. Your videos have helped me with mindset at work and also during a difficult physical therapy phase. Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸
You da' man! Excellent job. I'm 64 years old, after nearly a lifetime practicing other striking martial arts, I started training BJJ at 36. Now a 4th degree bb. Competed into my fifties in both bjj and judo. Still teach on and off. I've had shoulder surgery, (still a bad shoulder), leg surgery, broke my tibia on the mat in bjj, on and on. I've got injuries on top of my injuries and I don't regret a single f*cking day of training or competing. BJJ is a physically exhausting sport, especially against a room full of younger men every night. Seriously sir, you have all my respect.
Quitting isn’t in The Sheriff’s vocab! Conquered it at the unit and is hungry for more. This is the beginning of his journey to conquer again. Like the natives said in the past, the bear in him will never rest. Go get it baby! You inspire the F out of me.
It’s fantastic to see iron keeping iron sharp. Another good example like Tim Kennedy staying in the game keeping busy being a monster but in a better way. Jiu Jitsu humbles any monster.
Who the hell did they put you against, Kublai Khan? Nice effort, dude. At our age, that was a great showing. In the famous last words of the captain of the Titanic, "Full steam ahead, and fuck the icebergs!"
great job old man! you kept that youngster at bay really well! you are a testament to "old guys rock"! i am 64 yrs. and just retired from 40 yrs. of M.A. training. mostly traditional karate-do. had both hips replaced and now knees are gone. i envy you for staying at it! i wish i could. use it or lose it brother! well done!
I wish i would have known you where there. It would have been great to meet you. I compete at blue ultra heavy Master 3 division, but i competed in Master 2 the whole year to challenge myself.
Honestly, I wish you did VLOGS! Keep up the hard work, man! I’m 28. I’ve been battling with some depression issues lately and your attitude has really given me perspective on my life. Thank you for that.
@@joepic85 hahaha. Yeah, thats true. I moved to a town with a MMA gym in high school my freshman year and these guys kept talking shit to me, so we did “body shots” I kept up and actually won. This kid decides lets roll, he choked me so hard my eyes felt like they were gonna pop out and my Adams apple made me feel like something was jn my throat. Ignorance and being a teenager made me continue to call him a bitch and refuse to tap- I woke up with him standing over me scared to death. He had choked me unconcious. Hes a pro fighter now and were best friends to this day. 🤣👌🏼 Depression is weird thing though! I think once I find my way again I will get over it. Its mainly the recourse of my actions, my sons mom cheated and now I’m paying for it by her using him as a weapon against me. Shitty situation but its mine to deal with.
@@joepic85 It wasnt my actual Adams apple. I was trying to convey that it felt like I had a lump in my throat, but yeah he wasn’t the best. We were kids though and I wasnt going out easy. You ever tried choking a horse while its trying to buck you off? 🤣🤌🏼 I like watching Danaher teach. I think if I ever got taken to the ground I could hold my own unless it was someone who had trained. I've always wanted to learn… its never too late though. I've always been into boxing and stand up but I think versatility is crucial in anything in life. How would you go about starting? Like walking into the gym then what? I don't know the culture too well.
Looking forward to seeing you at it again. That snap down takedown off the collar grip is a good one to keep honing: Feel the pressure pushing back and hit him with a hard snap. So efficient and usually leads to front head position of back takes. I know he was back stepping a lot so the pressure wasn't there. Either way, it was AWESOME seeing you out there doing it!
Being a 50 year old purple myself , I'm happy every day I can still do it, some days I give the younger guys a run for their money other day I feel like if I was a horse they would shoot me. Good job.
Great job! Your videos are cool because it motivates us to put ourselves in vulnerable situations to get better. As a dad, I am trying to do that with my kids with sports. Really cool to see your hard work and humility.
John you got one hell of a gas tank. For those who don’t roll, John was pushing the pace from the get go. Even tho it end up on the ground with the guy trying to get side control, shriek was expending so much energy and was able to get back up and kept going. You wanna know what’s one of CAGs criteria to get in the unit? Shrek just showed everyone a great example of it. Just pulling on dudes Gi is tiring. Now I know now why Tim Kennedy don’t want none. The SOB ain’t no joke! Respect!
All respect and gratefulness for all you've done, and all you share including this, all for the help and edification and encouragement to us strangers that haven't given one one millionth of what you have to so many others at some much risk and pain to yourself. If you had won, it wouldn't be any more of a gift to us to let us see and learn from a master of chasing down good things and getting rid of evil things. Will be praying for you Sir Shrek, for great encouragement to be received by you, and that your heart learn of all that Christ offers, for only in Christ is all fulfillment and Grace and Forgiveness for anything rattling around found.
This gave me instant flashback to when I randomly decided to compete in a Freestyle wrestling tournament at 34 years old. It took me about 4 hours to fully recover from 6 minutes of wrestling.
No matter what style of fighting, when we get up to our age, endurance is always a mofo...This comes into the equation whether in a real fight or in competition. Way to represent CSM...HOOAH!!!👊
I use to do a lot of Japanese Jujitsu, which is a lot more stand up Jujitsu, but honestly though if I were to do more of the ground stuff then I would study Catch Can Wrestling which is way more brutal than Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I like it more because It's just evil. Awesome job and keep working at it then you'll be great at it. I enjoy watching your interviews and listening to your stories.
This video i think may have just encouraged me to start training again. Seeing you out there knowing you're gassed but keep pushing.. I'm 40 years old. I still weight train and run stairs but no mma training of any kind in almost 5 years now. I just get so fu

You have more power than him, and he was pretty worn out the second half. He was just trying to nullify and milk the clock after he got his points. I took Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu back in the day (for what it's worth), and in Judo the idea is taking your opponent's balance always. When you went for the foots sweep, he basically pulled you straight down since your balance and momentum went laterally. Attacks and are always counter or perpendicular to the opponents movements. Another other option, if he was maybe able to have more power would be to try to rotate you off balance, but that takes more finesse and generally means both folks go down. You gave him your back and he didn't immediately go for an sub. That is telling he was not comfortable being the aggressor. Loved your AAR analysis, always on point with your insight! - Stephen
A few of my friends went this year to Vegas to compete in the white belt category, One friend got 1st and the other got 2nd in different age groups . I hope to see you there next year and get a chance to say hi, you are a beast.
This guy was not just a Delta Operator, but a legend at the Unit. The fact that he has the humility to compete as a purple belt in a Jiu-jitsu tournament says a lot about his character.

Isn't any man who passed selection in The Unit a legend??
Amazing a 60 year old retired veteran competing with dudes half his age. Keep it up SGM as you continue to impress this retiree.
"Humility to compete as a purple belt" - that's a wild statement. It's not showing humility it's showing he's a normal person.
