Rakim (rah-Kim) is one of the greats. He was a pioneer of multi-syllable rhymes and internal rhyme schemes that changed rap forever. Eminem is one of the many who credit Rakim as one of his biggest influences.
The most beautifulest thing about the late 80's is you could simply turn on the radio in the car and hear Rakim, M.C.Lyte, BigDaddy Kane, HeavyD,Whodini, KRS1,SlickRick,DougieFresh, IceT,Spice1,KingTee all day before NWA pushed in gangster rap by YT. It was an underapprecited moment in time.
The God MC was very influential in Hip Hop. If you were to ask most MC’s who was their biggest influence. They would answer Rakim bars for days. The whole Paid in Full album is a straight up burner.🔥🔥🔥🎤🎤🎤. You should do Follow the Leader next.🎤🎤🎤🎤
I love seeing young folks getting their wigs split by the GOATS we came up on, BUT. I know even though you’re hearing the bars, the metaphors are going over your head. For example, he says "I nominated my DJ for president" on their first album there is a track titled Eric B. for president. Next, he says, "So pucker up and whistle My Melody" My melody is also a track from this same album, and it starts off with a whistle. Next, he drops "Before you know it you're following a fiend" The song he's best known for "Microphone Fiend" comes from their next album follow the leader. Rakim says, "put it in your pocket for later cause I’m moving the crowd and B a record fader" Move the crowd is also a track off the paid in Full album. I love watching you guys because history is being passed down but know you can’t get what we got out of this era because what made some of the bars so tight were the metaphors that we caught in real time. Keep digging and keep learning
It was 1987, I was in junior high and thoroughly enjoyed the straight lyrical skills of Eric B. and Rakim with no profanities needed in their raps. Rakim will always be a top 5 lyricist in my book.
You got the most girls if you got the most money. Aint nothing about a boom box. if you got money you got women and thats been the narrative since the beginning of time til today. its never changed and never willl.
That big boom box was dying around this time, it was more early, mid 80's. My uncle used to walk around leaning to one side for leverage, that's how big his shit was, had disco lights on it. He used to put bout 12 D batteries in that mf.
Rakim is the Original! I always pictured him sitting in a big chair just chillin because he barely breathes🤣 And some of us pretty girls had our own giant silver boomboxes! And they weren't light to carry but we had to show out!
Brought back great memories. Rap needs to go back to how it used to be an mc and a deck just to bang out great tunes. That's the boom box I had used to get all the girls with just a piece of cardboard and some banging tunes ❤
You gotta listen to both "Know The Ledge" and "Don't Sweat The Technique" by these guys... their music shaped me back in the 80s. I was a break dancer and loved hip-hop and rap, and I listened to heavy metal too, so it was a rough time for me lol
@@Pcytripper yep for sure. Wow, KRS-1 who was my friend Lubby's (RIP) boy! I told youngblood to check out Philly rapper Schoolly D and listen to P.S.K. or even Gucci Time. Ice T is a big fan. P.S.K.was big tune in my hood when I was growing up in Philly back in those days. Good times. Take care 🙂
This was almost 10 years before Martin and Gena. Lol. Rakim changed the Hip Hop game. Before him most rappers had what some call an ABC style. It was simple. Rakims flow was something new and blew minds. Rappers had to switch up and become more sophisticated after him.
We were in a nightclub when we first heard this song, and everyone went wild! Eric B. & Rakim were highly respected back then, because we knew every song would be a banger.
My first time hearing these guys, I'd just bought their cassette on a whim. I was maybe 13 and it was a hard time in life. So I took my new cassette to the football field at the high school, sat up on the bleachers and pressed play. All my worries fell away and I just vibed. Maybe for the first time in my life lol. This was literally the first album I'd ever bought and I hadn't even heard of them yet. My best memory with music.
Watch Eric B. & Rakim's other videos: Follow The Leader, Move The Crowd, Let The Rhythm Hit Em', Don't Sweat The Technique, Paid In Full, and many more!
Aye man,,the 80's did exist. This is like the third time you referred to an 80's hip hop song as the 90's. LOL C-mon man i love the 80's .Good channel tho. Im subscribin.
You know the funny thing about it is back in that day when those MC's heard this that we're getting ready to come out with their albums they threw them in the garbage and redid did everything he shut them down
"You can take 7 emcee's put em in a line, get 7 more brothers who think they can rhyme.. Well it will take 7 more before i go for mine, now that's 21 emcee's ate up at the same time" in reference to ".. Or you'll be one of those 7 emcee's". Rakim is the GOAT changed rap to what we have now in a similar sense to how Jordan changed basketball imo..
Having a. Boom Box did not mean you got the most girls, just like today it all comes down to "Money, Car's and your Own Place" and this was the mid 1980's. Rakim is the MC (Rapper) Eric B. The DJ.
When I was a kid in 88 i wanted to be Rakim when I grew up. True story B. I only buy Mercedes Benz cause that’s all Rakim had back then. Seriously I only have Benz cars cause of Rakim. Gotta be fly on some B-Boy shit
This is the difference between between your generation and my generation. People who rapped then, they lived what they rapped. Today, is content less garbage. No one will remember any of the idiots today a year from now. But someday some intergalactic kid 100 years from now can put this song on and be like damn, this is pretty cool. Also, name me one rapper today who can do their thing without cursing. Rakim and many can of that generation.
yo king..... u should check out HIT'EM HIGH from the first space jam album, othe the collab with busta and janet WHATS IT GONNA BE, AND LAST BUT NOT LEASE tHE FIRST EVER nu METAL SONG i i'm the man by athrax
Eric B is the DJ. Rakim is the MC. Rakim is definitely one of the all time greats. This was right before that gangsta stuff got big.
