    I think there are a few people that hate thrash metal because I used to play it too loud 😄 ... also the rivalry between glam and thrash is a bit overstated here. The two never really competed with each other - glam was more about the parties and good times with hooks and riffs that were more accessible to the ladies and some of the old generation, while thrash was all about energy, aggression and dynamics. The two styles were only rarely fighting for the same listeners, there really wasn't that much direct conflict.

      Pretty sure it was never really serious, but there was certainly a thing with Metallica and Twisted Sister - there's a quote somewhere where the TS singer (no idea!) pointed out that they are 'all one big metal family' and the response (let's just assume it was James... ) was No!!! Fuck you!!!
      Metal 'purists' Metallica, there. Look at them now!

      I think if glam metal wasn't called "metal" in the first place, it wouldn't have gotten half the hate it has. There are some bands which legitimately qualify as metal (eg. early Motley Crue, Twisted Sister), while other bands in the movement (eg. Poison, Bon Jovi) were some variation of hard rock or pop rock.

    I love thrash. I'm not old enough to have actually lived through the era, but I became obsessed with thrash metal throughout high school and, thanks to the Internet, I was able to dig up literally hundreds of bands -- from the well-known greats like Megadeth, Sepultura, Vio-lence, Overkill and Exodus, to more obscure bands like Xentrix, Ulysses Siren and Morbid Saint. It was an incredible voyage of discovery that I think back on with great fondness now. The "neo-thrash" bands, however, are almost uniformly terrible. They sound stale as all hell. They're trying much too hard to imitate and revive the 80s instead of doing what they should do, which is to take influences and then warp those influences in such a way that their presence becomes difficult to detect. That way, the music produced by the new band can sound fresh. Vektor is been pretty much the only band in this group that has successfully pulled this off. _Terminal Redux_ is a work of art.
    The cringiest thing of all about the newer thrash bands, however, is that they STILL make songs about "killing poseurs." In the 80s when Paul Baloff was screaming about this, it made sense because in the 80s, metal was being infested with kitschy glam metal and becoming commercialized. Its artistic integrity was being undermined. At a time like that, getting angry about poseurs made sense and resonated with people because it was a response to a genuine issue of the time. But that's not true anymore. It's not even close to true. Metal is nowhere close to commercially mainstream these days. Mainstream pop artists are not adopting and bastardizing metal's sound. And so, if you go around today complaining about "poseurs," the question must be asked: Who exactly are you complaining about? The complaint rings hollow. It sounds fake. They look like they're play-acting, pretending that it's still the 80s. It's stupid.
    The reason why newer thrash sounds so terrible is that it failed to evolve. It's not the 80s anymore. We live in a completely different world now. And by not adapting thrash to the real issues of our time, the newer thrash bands sound tone deaf. When people seek out art, they're usually searching for some kind of spiritual nourishment, whether they realize it or not. Hollow escapism is not nourishment, and deep down, people realize that.

  • @daveroxit
    @daveroxit 4 роки тому +6

    I'm always torn about the issue of bands who change their sound or style over time. Artists from the late '60s and early '70s, operating in a post-Beatles climate, frequently felt that changing things up was a way to stay vital and demonstrate growth. Later generations have embraced the idea of "branding" and never straying from an established sound, look, or style that has been proven to work. One path, if done right, can provide the thrill of ongoing discovery, but runs the risk of inconsistency; the other, when done right, may provide consistency but runs the risk of succumbing to cliche. I don't think a lot of rock or metal fans want to hear anything different from their beloved bands; they love the romance of the *idea* of rebellion, but when it comes down to it they are a deeply conservative bunch who lose their minds if anything changes.

    • @TheSchemer1

      @@nokturnalmortum4763 Death Metal can be boring, but at least Death Metal is one of those genres where the bands push themselves to levels of greatness. I grew up on thrash 30 years ago, and it's a genre that after so many years gets boring. Bands just open E, and palm mute their way through songs. There have only ever been a handful of thrash bands that ever achieved greater heights in song writing. The smartest thing Metallica ever did was abandon thrash metal. Death Angel was another band that released broke away from Thrash and made the amazing Act3, but have since returned to boring, formulaic thrash. Exodus created one song that showed they had potential to reach greater heights of song writing and that was Architect of Pain, and then they went back to paint by numbers thrash songs. Overkill never pushed themselves beyond phone in the same album 19 times. Where as you have tons of Death Metal acts like Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Septicflesh, Fleshgod Apocalypse, etc. who created something beyond boring paint by numbers tunes. Never content to release the same albums over and over. The only thrash bands I can think of that really created anything brilliant were Voivod, Metallica, Megadeth, Death Angel(for a short period anyways). Testament always had the potential for something greater but never went for it. I would say that Classic Metal eg. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Satan, Grim Reaper etc. and Death Metal(although death metal has the limit vocal factor) are far more exciting than thrash.\

    You have a great straight-forwardness with your speaking and production, it's pretty damn good. Also, I'd say another reason why some people dislike or hate thrash is that they just can't stand the speed and heaviness. This seems kind of implied but it's reasonably true, especially when a lot of people are used to quite high production quality and more-over production fidelity and clarity, so older works may sound a bit crusty to them. Especially works by more underground/lesser known bands, for example Teutonic bands, as there supposedly wasn't as much of a scene as there was in the Bay Area and the U.S. in general. I'm not certain but I'm reasonably sure that Germany didn't have access to the productive means that studios in the U.S. did.

    @coverkillernation, I'm a Born Again Christian and like Thrash Metal from Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, some Overkill, as well as some Testament. And I even like a few songs from Slayer (They deffanately have a gift from God to play music because they're sound and vocals together are great, I just get the feeling that more than likely God is probably not happy with the lyrics and a number of song titles they have along with allot of other bands, artists groups genres of music) Some songs I like from them are: South Of Heaven, Dead Skin Mask, Raining Blood, Chemical Warfare and maybe a few more. When it comes to albums, I buy albums for the music not the cover. Like I bought Anthrax For All Kings (2016) (Love the music on there.) I'm just not crazy about the fact that they use basically a pentagram on some of they're albums including that one. Also As well as the fact that they tend to have basically an upside down cross on allot of they're albums. But I don't tend to judge based on the cover looking at it seeing different imagery going "Okay I should just stay away from this music completely since it has a pentagram or an upside down cross on it." I look at the songs, listed on the back and maybe listen to some of the songs on the Internet and or read the lyrics first to see what I think. And If I really like a number of the songs or even a few, and or have heard that it's a good album, I might check it out. Some albums have a great cover and look like I might really like the music on them, then listened to the music and It just wasn't for me. Other albums the cover may have had some strange imagery and the music was fine, and good. I just don't always agree with the lyrics on all songs. But there are some songs like Creeping Death for example that is all pretty accurate to The Plagues Of Egypt described in the Movies like The Ten Commandments and others that are based off The Bible so that's proof right there that Thrash, as well as other genres of Metal are not Evil. Blac Metal I'm not sure about though, I'd say the music itself sounds fine, but the lyrics I'm not entirely sure about. I had went to a Slipknot Concert a little while back and Behemoth was one of the opening acts, I thought they sounded pretty good, except for the fact that I couldn't understand a word they were saying 90% of the time.

      You are not alone, brother. I'm Christian as well; have been for most of my life and I really enjoy a lot of metal. My favorite thrash band is Kreator which have a lot of evil looking album covers. I learned to not "judge a book by it's cover" so much because while they have have demons and skeletons on the covers, their lyrics have no satanic content. It's mostly political and social themes, or songs about horror movies they've seen. As long as the lyrics aren't blasphemous, I'm pretty open minded.

Even bands that aren't full fledged thrash bands such as Chimaira, Trivium, Lamb Of God, Iced Earth and even Bullet For My Valentine have incorporated elements and aspects of thrash metal that I enjoy listening to. I love the heaviness and the aggression of the style, but my real problem with it is it's elitist fanbase which causes me to turn my back on it as a whole. It's the same issue that I have with traditional death metal and basic black metal. The music isn't the problem, it's the fanbases elitism is what turns me off to the music.

    For me (only counting pure thrash metal bands: progressive thrash metal and other possible subgenres of it not included)
    1. I like mid-tempo metal better.
    2. The drumming is mainly repetitive,intense,and up tempo drumming. I prefer more creative,dynamic,and expressive drumming.
    3. Aside from a few bands like Metallica and maybe Evile,I’ve found that thrash metal songs are generally shorter and I like when plenty of longer songs are mixed in a band’s discography.
    4. Thrash metal is a subgenre I need to be in the mood to listen to. Whereas subgenres like progressive metal and symphonic metal are ones I can listen to all the time.
    5. A lot of thrash metal bands don’t have a diverse discography. You kind of know what you’re getting when you listen to thrash metal bands. This doesn’t always bother me (again,I like symphonic metal),but it’s more bothersome here given the many other things I don’t like about thrash metal.

      You're absolutely right, you have to be in the right mood but also i think thrash metal is a metal subgenre that needs to be played live or in some outdoor big speakers. It's powerful music and to understand it completely (some songs are still too repetitive with the drums) you need to move with energy. What do you think?

    • @corbinm5237
      @corbinm5237 4 роки тому

      Andrea Sabbadin I would say in a way,yes. But I think if you’re musically inclined or at least know what to listen for then it doesn’t take a specific environment to understand the music. Maybe to enjoy it better,but not understand it. I’m sure seeing a thrash metal band live is intense and great,but for me personally I’d rather see a band like Dream Theater or Periphery live that includes intensity but also complexity,melody,and dynamic contrast. Thrashing and shredding riffs are great,but I can only listen to so much before I get bored and want something different.

    • @drmemer3633

      @@drmemer3633 that’s fair. I totally get that,but for my personal taste I prefer drummers like Mario Duplantier and Matt Halpern who can play up tempo and intense,but mainly play with intuitiveness and creativity. I’m sure there are a few drummers like that in thrash metal,but I haven’t found any yet. And as far as listening to metal anytime goes,I’m personally a jazz,blues,progressive music,and rock fan before I’m a metalhead. With those four genres,I genuinely like most of what I’ve heard there and I’d rarely if ever turn the music off if someone played a song from those genres. With metal,I’d say at least 90% of it is stuff I don’t like and what I do like is anything that’s non extreme progressive metal/djent. Symphonic metal too. That’s about it really.

Keep in mind it was brand new and it set the bar incredibly high as it was setting the world on fire. The bands that came after were either trying to copy it or at a minimum were highly influenced by it. Us oldy types do like newer kinds of metal too though, we just hold early metal like Sabbath, NWOBHM and thrash very close to or hearts. It is our Beatles and our Stones. To be honest, if you are so resistant to give thrash a fair chance, perhaps you're the one who's close minded? Perhaps you've pre judged those bands or follow a trend to dislike them? If not, that's cool. Not trying to make accusations. When something as powerful and complex as thrash comes out, more stripped down forms of metal are just harder to appreciate. Although lets be honest it's not really metal. Then I became of age and realized it took a fuck ton more talent to play thrash and started into my journey into metal. Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth said goodbuy to Poison Warrant and Motley Crue. No regrets HAHA!

I have always had a problem with the fact that they could “ call out “ “conservatives” but the PMRC was headed by Tipper Gore , Al Gore’s wife definitely a “ liberal” . Be consistent; both sides have problems and the liberal side is just as hypocritical as the right and maybe more. Keep thrashing; you can unite the “right” and the “left” with smart lyrics that address the problems not ostracizing the “ other side”.

    Thrash didn't remain same if you look at the bigger picture. If you define thrash only with its technicallity, then it'll seem it remained same but if you see it as a spirit you can that it's just been changed and derivated into different forms of metal. Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Lamb of God, Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Killswitch Engage, Pantera, Mayhem; all these bands have done their own version of thrash music. They are all inspired by thrash metal and hardcore punk movements. Btw I have never seen a single metalhead that is a die hard glam metal fan hated thrash because of it. Glam metal never had a die hard fanbase or "scene kids" their fan base was basically consisting of groupies and guys who were trying to nail them. Since there were no scene kids in the sunset strip there weren't any community of the glam fanbase to derive different sounds of it later on.

    The problem with thrash is the same problem that effects any subgenre that's getting old. Too much of the same, lack of imagination, and not bringing anything new to the table. The true artists move on before the genre gets too stale. I also think a bunch of nerds doing the tough guy act irritates anyone over the age of 15.
    Thrash was a great genre, but it's done, except for the occasional gem eg Vector. We should however, at the very least, thank thrash for disposing of glam. But then, with glam defeated, many thrash bands tried pandering to the mainstream. Which basically made them comparable to the glam bands they hated so much.
    I was also irritated by the thrash bands acting like grunge killed thrash, and that metal was non existent during the grunge years. During this time was an explosion of underground metal. Only commercial metal was dead.

      the artist formally known as craig lastname the lack of diversity is probably my biggest problem with thrash metal as a whole. You basically know what every band’s whole discography sounds like when you listen to one song from them. It’s not an appealing genre to me to begin with,but if it were more diverse and creative instead of stagnant then I’d probably like it more. That’s why I love Sylosis so much; a band rooted in thrash metal that incorporates strong progressive metal and death metal influences. It’s so fresh and stands out from the rest. There isn’t a lot of that in thrash metal.

      Considering that some of those glam bands are doing stadium tours this year, statements like yours seem childish. Also its the thrash bands who moved away from thrash sound to a more commercial Hard Rock sound in the early 90s, You can also make the argument that glam killed thrash with that logic. Truth is both styles have ran out of steam in the early 90s and lost their momentum while influencing New bands that came out in the 00s.

    • @craigroaring
      @craigroaring 4 роки тому

      @@LuchaLibertaria Childish? How so? I don't think doing stadium tours means anything. Most pop music can do that. If that is what dictates what a great band is then we could say that Taylor Swift is better than Opeth.

    • @LuchaLibertaria
      @LuchaLibertaria 4 роки тому

      @@craigroaring that whole 'x killed this genre' argument, as if its some boxing match, is childish. Music genres reach their creative peak and after that they lose their momentum due to oversaturation of the market, lack of creative ideas etc. Stadium tours means that genre still has a fanbase who are willing to go and see them and are numerous enough to sell out a stadium. It doesn't say anything about the quality of music but it shows that genre isn't quite 'dead' yet. Taylor Swift can do a stadium show, so does Iron Maiden and Roger Waters. Being popular doesn't mean that you suck, You can be popular without losing your musical integrity.

    Lol, I'm really late, but I just don't like it because I find it cringy. I actually do like some bands and songs tho like from Metallica, Sodom, Toxic Holocaust and Repulsion, mostly the blackened-thrash stuff. but overall I can't stand the clean vocals that try to sound evil like Paul Bolaffs or Tom Araya's or the straight up clean, melodic singing like Joey Belladonna, or even worse the high pitched, fast paced, choppy vocals like Violator or Municipal Waste. Might as well use distorted, fried vocals, or shreiks if you want to present an evil or angry image. Also I find Tom Araya's random princess screams in some Slayer songs like Angel of Death and Aggressive Perfector to be unnecessary and out of place in an evil sounding song. It would be so much better if he shrieked it or growled. Other than that it's also the fashion and culture that turns me off. I don't really like the having greasy long hair, trying to look ugly and intimidating and smelling like shit and getting wasted all the time part of it, I prefer the glam style. And I think neo thrash is stupid because they try to hang on to the 80s thrash sound, vibe and fashion. Ultimately, I prefer black metal and it's subgenres and fusiongenres when it comes to extreme metal.

Receptiveness is good in rap lol it took over metal since 1995. Ac/dc is repeptive. Creativity is needed desperately from scratch not copy, steal, & paste. As someone who preferred Thrash in the 80's as their favorite genre by the 90's I was bored shitless of it. I pretty much stopped listening to every thrash band(except Slayer) and got more into other forms of heavy music eg. Death Metal, post hardcore, hardcore, Doom metal, industrial metal. The problem with thrash is that it's so generic. Very few bands push themselves for greatness, and in order to do that you really have to stop playing thrash it seems. I can't name one other band that even tried to write a record as great as Master of Puppets. There were great records out there, but none on that level. Several bands released albums as good as Ride the Lighting eg. The Legacy, and The Ultra-violence. I can only think of a few bands that ever reached any levels of songwriting greatness and that was Voivod, Megadeth, Metallica, and Death Angel(although Death Angel have since returned to repeating the same thrash album over and over again). Testament had all the potential but never pushed themselves for that epics song, or album. Overkill just wrote the same album over and over. It just seems like Thrash bands are content to just open E, and palm mute, their way though songs. Just using the tritone up and down the neck. It just got boring. These days I prefer classic metal eg. Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Grim Reaper, Budgie, Doom Metal, and death metal because I find the riffs, and compositions more interesting. Classic metal bands actually write riffs instead of just jerking of the guitar neck with the tritone.
