I can’t listen to your songs just once. I have to repeat them until I memorize all the words. Then, I sing them on my walk to work. I sing them to my goddaughters. I sing them to my husband. I sing them to myself when I am crying myself to sleep. I love your art. Thank you for sharing your gift.
If we could bottle certainty, there would be no need for heroes. Great lyrics, Jesse from a 71 yr old great grandmother. My cousin was Hank Williams, and he would have loved you. He passed the year I was born, but he was a strong lyrical poet who was 2- 3rds, tormented by this world. Keep letting the words come. You are loved by us who truly hear you. ❤
I live right in the path Helene took across Appalachia and I can’t even explain how hard those opening lines hit… “…in the middle of an ocean, and I can’t hardly see the shore / It’s a hard way to find out you don’t wanna be a sailor/ Halfway across in your mother’s trailer.” I know this is probably meant as a wider metaphor about doubt, disempowerment, etc but there are so many people with stories that sound just like that… And in fact the ocean was the very metaphor that came to my mind when I saw the river that day, just crashing waves and impossibly wide. And of course it ain’t just about the flood, it’s that pain compounded with all the other ugliness that’s going on in the wider world, the death and blood and fear and hatred that weighs on our souls. So for us there’s a sickening uncertainty that’s twofold, regarding the disaster and regarding everything else. I didn’t know I could be this tired. And yet like the chorus observes, the sun still shines. As if to drive the point home, the weather here has been absolutely gorgeous and peaceful ever since the storm. How strange it is to be picking up the broken pieces of shattered lives amidst a paradise… But all I can say though is, listening to this was profoundly cathartic and released months of tears that needed to be shed. I hope you come here someday with this song in hand, not for me so much as for all the people I think need to hear it too. Thank you Jesse 🙏
