SPOILER ALERT ... ... ... In this week's episode we recorded a bit at the end to explain the combo, but we got one of the details wrong! Etherium Sculptor does not reduce the amount of life you have to pay when casting spells off the top of your library using Bolas's Citadel. If you have only Bolas's Citadel, Sensei's Divining Top, and Etherium Sculptor, you are indeed limited to drawing an amount of cards that's less than (or equal to if you want to be really technical) your life total. Fortunately for Jan, he also had an Aetherflux Reservoir, which meant that this distinction did not affect the outcome of this game in the slightest. Thanks for watching!
The reason i love this channel is because i don't have to pause the video to read up on the cards. You keep them on the screen for a long time and even reads them out loud for us aswell. Keep up the good work! I would suggest a turn-counter in the future so we can keep track of the turns during the game
Underground Sea (Underground Sea) Underground Sea (Underground Sea) Life is much danker Down where it's stanker Take it from me! Up in the sun they slave away Down here we make Dimir all day Don't get too pensive This card's expensive Underground Sea! This popped into my head more or less fully-formed at around 7:00 and I felt I had to share. I'm not even sorry.
I believe that you can't apply sculptor's discount to artifacts, that you play from the top of your library? because Citadel says "pay life equal to it's CMC"
You are absolutely correct! We screwed up the interaction at the time, however even if it was played properly it wouldn't have mattered because resevoir was out as well!
Introduction overlay "pops" are much better this week. Again, I'm not trying to be super critical, but I feel like you guys are putting a lot of effort into this new deck introduction style, and I want to continue to provide feedback. You guys are awesome!
Glad to hear! We're going with a MUCH more complicated mixing method that we're hoping will really improve the quality. We definitely appreciate the feedback because this stuff seems to sound different on every device!
I almost won with it in sealed. Had it been anywhere but the last two cards of my deck (which it was), I’d have won during extra turns, but it was one card too deep for me to draw into it.
I am not a player of cedh I’m probably very far in the opposite direction but the video quality and the editing is so good it makes CEDH gameplay very entertaining! Awesome work I really enjoy it!
I have a version of this combo in Emry but instead of Bolas's Citadel its Mystic Forge, mostly so that if I hit a land I can at least filter it once using the Forge's activated ability.
Wanted to point out that that even if he wanted to, Bill could not re-soulbond to kraum when it enters. Soulbond can only take place if both creatures are unpaired. Deadeye can "re-soulbond" by blinking itself, but other soulbond creatures are stuck once paired until one of the paired creatures leaves the battlefield, stops being a creature, or changes control.
Circu is the reason I found this channel. I built it myself and definitely felt that Paradox Engine ban. I decided to go the Doomsday route instead though. The lantern pieces stayed in to facilitate Scepter combos as well as cut a few cards off of my own Doomsday piles.
A cost reducer doesn’t reduce the paying one life for top. Citadel says: pay one life for its converted mana cost, the cmc of top is still 1. It would have closed the deal anyway though :) love your channel!
This Bolas's Citadel/aetherflux reservoir/Sensei's Divining Top combo is one of my favorites. It got me my first turn 3 win. I had a mana vault, sol ring, dark ritual, vampiric tutor, Sensei's Divining top and 2 lands in my opening hand. Played out fast mana and Sensei's Divining top turn 1, vamp tutored at the end of turn 2 for Bolas's Citadel. Turn 3 did the Bolas's Citadel/Sensei's diving top combo till I hit a tutor. Hit a lotus petal, chrome mox on the way to the demonic tutor. Played aetherflux reservoir and the rest was history. *also I hit a paradox engine before the demonic tutor. This game took place 2 days before paradox engine was banned.
Love the camaraderie you guys all have. Reminds me of me and my best friends. Always an enjoyable watch, and Alex yet again proving to be a wonderful addition to the show. Great game and congratulations to Jan on the circu victory, well deserved!
Circu still exiles the land, but it doesn't prevent that land from being played by other players because it specifies that you can't "cast" cards with that name.
Eliot is testing Kroxa as a replacement for Xantcha at the head of his Rakdos WGD deck, and it is very promising! Expect to see something late this season.
Jerry talking here, I think thassa's oracle is sweet. I've always loved lab man strategies. And this will for sure replace lab man in breya where I have jace as another option. I'll also add it as the second lab man in Tishana ( I dont run Jace because 3 blue is VERY difficult for the deck to pull off)
Yes, even though Bolas's Citadel has a restriction on when you're able to look at cards, by the time you've cast your spell and Circus abilities have triggered your able to look at the top card again before you have to make any decisions regarding Circus abilities. -Jan
I didn't get the combo at first so was kind of salty when they all just scooped being familiar with the combo and understanding they had lost then say "if you didn't follow what just happened we have a video that explains it". But then they go ahead and explain it, so my salt was expelled and I didn't have to impotently shake my fist in the comments.
i could be wrong, but i think jan shouldn't have been able to look at the top card before deciding whether to self-mill with circu or not? the ruling on citadel says "If the top card of your library changes while you’re casting a spell, playing a land, or activating an ability, you can’t look at the new top card until you finish doing so. This means that if you cast the top card of your library, you can’t look at the next one until you’re done paying for that spell." -- and since Circu triggers immediately off cast, and requires a target to be chosing immediately upon triggering, I believe Jan technically shouldn't have a window to be allowed to take a peek seeing as there's no instance to hold priority while not actively putting something on the stack?
also, another potentially wrong nitpick - shouldn't etherium sculptor not interact with bolas's citadel? because the citadel says "pay life equal to its converted mana cost rather than pay its mana cost", and sculptor doesn't actually change the CMC? i don't think it would have changed how jan's line played out either way though
I'm not certain Jan couldn't look at the top card of his library. Jan does finish casting the spell, which causes a TRIGGERED ability to go off. He does need to put the triggered ability onto the stack before he can do anything else that uses the stack, but that is not one of the things listed on the gatherer judge rulings that has to be completed before looking at the top card. The ruling on gatherer specifically lists ACTIVATED abilities, casting spells, and playing lands. Normally, looking at the top card does not use the stack. I lean toward saying he would be able to look before finishing putting Circu's ability on the stack, but am not sure. I am not a judge and couldn't find a definitive answer in my quick internet search. If someone does find a clear answer (or is a judge who can tell me why), please let me know.
So first you are absolutely correct about the Etherium Sculptor, that was a mistake on my part! I had it confused with similar effects (Mystic Force). For the interaction with Bolas's Citadel, the important part from that ruling is that if your casting a spell, you can't look at the top card until you finish paying for the spell. What that means is once I've paid the life and the spell is fully cast on the stack, I can look at the top card again before I make any decisions about my trigger targets. Hopefully that made sense! If not let me know and I'll try and clarify more! -Jan
While I do agree that Flash/Hulk is broken, why would they ban flash? the RC doesn't care about cEDH and Flash/Hulk is such a rare thing in casual it doesn't matter.
Maui Bermudez cEDH is EDH blah blah blah highest level of the format blah blah blah. They can’t differ between the two since the want to be the same blah blah blah thus it’ll get banned regardless of what level the majority plays at with enough cries. I have Flash Hulk but I run 0 tutors so half the time Flash is a dead card for me.
One player takes a 6 minute solitaire turn and the other 3 guys scoop... I personally love cEDH but unfortunately I think this is one of the reasons why it gets a bad rap
I thumbed this video down for mentioning Josh Lee Kwai's name. Everyone is always on his nut and The Command Zone makes mediocre content. Do it again and I will thumb down again.

Hey, sorry about that here is the updated list: archidekt.com/decks/89453#Tishy_Fishy thanks!
Circu is nonland cards right? So Exotic Orchard for example can still be cast by the other players?
Lands can not be casted. They are played. Effects that restrict or enable casts do not affect lands.
Circu still exiles the land, but it doesn't prevent that land from being played by other players because it specifies that you can't "cast" cards with that name.

so, you can look at the top card of your library before deciding who to target with Circu?
Yes, even though Bolas's Citadel has a restriction on when you're able to look at cards, by the time you've cast your spell and Circus abilities have triggered your able to look at the top card again before you have to make any decisions regarding Circus abilities.
