    Acquired a 94 it out of a field west Oahu and have a lot of parts ordered or in the mail! Runs but dies when giving throttle.
    Both the front brake and clutch reservoirs had been poorly screwed closed I'm guessing 5 years ago, and were dry as dust. Cracked tires and flaking rim paint, busted brake pedal, cracked but complete fairings...
    New brake lines and caliper rebuild under way.
    Good to get overviews like this and glad you you got it running!

    Those are pressed in Jets. !!! Vice grips twist and turn and pull out. !!! May have to replace them if you bend them. ???? There will be oxidation White gravel under them you must remove and clean the whole all the way through !!! There are several air bleed holes that must be cleaned all the way through also. !!!! I use bread ties with the paper removed I also make my own drill bits out of speaker wire wrapped together and bend a crank to drill and poke through the small holes. !!!!!

    Another UA-cam video, once again, and all too often, proving the incompetence of the previous owner, and the new owner has to pick up the pieces, and put in a lot of effort, for the motorcycle to survive. so, good job on your caring for the bike.

    Thanks buddy. Doing my VFR400R carbs in the next few days. Like you, I also want to do the minimum amount of work to get it running properly. Don't want to spend months on the crabs when there are other jobs to do, oh, and riding!

      No such thing as minimum work. !!!! 2 days of soaking in seafoam. Replacing all the Jets and seats. Making drill bits out of bread ties and speaker wires to clean all the little itty bitty air bleed holes. Miscellaneous gaskets. Possibly new floats and float valves and seats. Gage balancing them on the bench. Vacuum balancing them on the bike running. Your first half a dozen carb rebuild always bite you in the ass. Slower is faster. !!! Don't overlook or skip anything. Expect to take them off and rebuild them 3 times at least ????

    It's easier to take the whole seat unit off in one piece, don't need to split it at all. Good vid tho, nice one :-)

    Very interesting vid! I am in the process of doing exactly this on my 1990 FL. It runs fine but one or more of the float bowl shut off pins has failed and it happily p*sses fuel through the overflow pipe all over the ground.. Only difference is the petcock is on the left on mine and has a regulator diaphragm that only allows fuel to flow when the pump is in operation so it only leaks when the engine is running. I Did wonder whether inserting wires down the jets to assist in cleaning was a wise idea but you got it going so I shall do the same, with care of course! I have had push fit jets break off trying to remove them so on a bike of this age if it ain't broke... clean it seems the way to go. Good job!

    Thanks for a very helpful vid. I tried to clean my carbs today, because the motor's running bad (very high idle, starts without choke, bad reply on throttle). Hoped to find it messy inside, but it was quite clean. Tho, I wasn't able to get a wire through main jet. Maybe my wire was too thick? What size of wire fits?

    Hi , helpful video. I have a 1997 model of the same bike and when I pull the choke lever the revs do not rise and the engine tries to stall. Have you any idea what the issue might be?

    thanks for the video, i just tore into my vf700s sabres carbs. i had lost fuel to the rear cylinders. ive cleaned as much as i could without separating the carbs, now its running on all 4 but i have little power and had to really raise my idle up. any ideas?

    Mine's done 60K Miles, carbs really filthy, Bike was given me by my mate as it was written off when used as a getaway bike in a robbery!!
    Fairings cracked, but was running fine. problem is it started but poured petrol over the workshop floor. So I took the carbs off.
    Will have to do a check, float bowls etc
    Did you re-synchronise the carbs, or was that not necessary

    Hi
    do you still own the bike and if so how is it running. Just bought one pick up later this week but watching this video has made me question my purchase.

    • @symballs
      @symballs  7 років тому +1

      I dont own the bike. I am not sure how its doing now. Don't despair though, if you can get the bike started you can run seafoam treatments through the gas tank. that will clear out alot of buildup as I mentioned to another below. If you cant get it to turn over because it is totally starved of fuel then someone will have to take the carbs apart. I think the VFR is a good bike, just like anything sometimes it needs care

    • @ricksimpson2167
      @ricksimpson2167 6 років тому

      Good job that bike really looks intimidating. !!!! I would guess for all that work 5. 8 hour days. ???? I'm thinking about buying a VF 750 Cruiser type bike that needs carbs rebuilt and jetted for Vance & Hines exhaust. I've rebuilt a lot of carbs but on the V type engines they're tough. And these double v Motor they are truly insane. !!!! Does the airbox and carb have to be removed to change the rear spark plugs. ???? What would it cost in a shop to clean rebuild and rejet the carbs and I guess you should put new plugs into at that time. ???

    Robin,
    I have a '96 with carbs in same condition. all you did to the jet that is un removable is run wire down through it? It is frustrating that its not removable. I believe its the choke fuel pickup jet?
    I'm installing new needles as well. I wanted to know if there was anything else you can add to insure a complete cleaning of the carbs. You know how difficult they are to remove and install.
    Thank you

    • @symballs
      @symballs  8 років тому

      Yeah, i ran a wrire down that jet. The smallest wire. I did this after soaking the whole bank of carbs in pinesol for a few days to soften up the crud. Initially i couldnt even get the wire down the jet. After i sprayed carb cleaner in all the orifices until i could see the liquid come out the other end.

      cbr 600 rr Chevy Tahoe LT how much does it cost to have a shop remove clean and replace the carburetors. ???? How much would it cost to have them rejetted for a Vance & Hines exhaust system. ????

      Yep,,,, I was just quoting roughly $500,,,, remove clean,,,, bench balance,,,, synchronize,,,, and new spark plugs,,,,. I'll do all of it myself,,,, but may have Honda,,,, do the synchros nation,,. !!! ??? May even slightly drill out all of the Jets,,,. 2 thousands larger,,,. ??? And add a washer under the main jet,,,,

      +Rodney Jones If the bike still runs I would put some Seafoam in the tank to clean the carbs. you may need more than one treatment, but it is alot easier than taking the motorcycle apart.

    Hi Robyn, I know it's a while ago now, and this wasn't your bike, but did you discover the reason for the oil on the plugs and filter? Also I believe I detect a Canadian accent, but was it a California model? I hear they have their exhaust shit fed back to them through the carbs, which surely can't be healthy for the engine!! Bloody bullshit climate legislation!! When do they ban cow farts?
    The state of the filter was alarming. Did you perform a compression test? My guess is you didn't because it looks like a much harder job to access than on my CB-1, and that's a bugger on the inside cylinders. Could be valve seals I guess. It's sad to see a great bike neglected that badly isn't it?
    Thank you for the instructional vid. Finally, can you send me a bottle of pineol in the UK? ;)) We don't have it here and I don't know what the equivalent is.

    Use a eye dropper and drip seafoam in every hole and see where it comes out at and if it goes through the hole quickly. Or if it's plugged clogged up. ???? This is way too much work not to do them 100%. Most times you'll have to remove them and rebuild them 3 times to you learn what not to skip. ???? Thousands of dollars in cams and pistons and they still won't run like a raped ape unless the carbs are done perfect. ,!!!!!
