The first episode of a series about the creative and innovative use of roofs in cities. Rotterdam is at the forefront of changing so called “gray roofs” into useful, green, creative roofs where city life is becoming more pleasant, greener and more sustainable.
Esther Wienese takes us on a visit to a real plot on the roof of a building: De Dak Akker (The Roof Plot).. where they grow vegetables and flowers on a high roof top right in the center of Rotterdam.. also the terrace of a delicious Bistro overlooks the garden. All together a great example of innovation on how we can use the space in a city.
Every year millions of people worldwide migrate to cities.
Cities are therefore becoming fuller, dirtier, warmer and less green.
A solution for a healthier and more liveable city is nearby: on the roof tops!
On roofs top you can live, work, play sports, play, eat, drink, grow vegetables, generate energy and collect rainwater.
