  • In this video, I do load development and testing with 55 FMJ bullets and CFE 223 powder. This combination did not work well previously when using a 68 grain bullet. Please refer to the video below.

It's been a while but when I tried CFE223 with a 55 gr bullet .75 and .8 was the best group I got also . I did get a couple of .6 groups with the 75 gr BTHP .

Hodgdon shows 26 to 27.8 grains . I know you aren't shooting an ar-15 but ... I am loading both the Hornady 55 grain spbt and fmjbt bullets with 27.2 gr of cfe 223 .
My ar's really like this load .
I don't have a bench rest but free hand im seeing decent accuracy.

I feel certain CFE223 is an excellent powder for an AR. Of course I'm shooting groups at 100 yards, but for home defense or battle/tactical use it's fine. Thanks for watching

PS: I just noticed a little picture on the front of the container of CFE 223 that has a picture of what looks like a 55 grain FMJ WC and it says "FMJ approved." That's obviously what it was designed for and where it will work best.

What is the name of that cheek rest? Have you done other modifications to that Ruger American? I like mine but in debating buying a stick for it or try to fix the stock it came with.

Hi 18wheels. I'm sorry, I don't know the name of the cheek rest. There are many available on Amazon. I think this one may have come from midwayusa.com. Yes I have made a few modifications. I got a two-part silicone mixture which I mixed and poured into the butt stock to add weight. I also added weight to the forestock and reinforced it with JB weld steel stick. And i modified the trigger. You can find a hack on UA-cam for replacing the trigger spring with a spring out of a ballpoint pen. It changes the trigger pull from 8 pounds to about 2 1/2 pounds. safe and functional.

That's what I'm working tonight myself. Create 55 FMJ with CFE223. I am trying to figure out what my AR barrow can do. Try different powder measurements... Question what would you suggest we be a good OAL? My bullet is not in the books I have and I know the max is length is 2.260. I was thinking of try to stay around 2.250 - 2.253 since not every bullet is the same size.
let me know what you think. Keep up the great videos I have learn things since I found your video.

Louie, thanks for watching.I appreciate the compliment. I load most of my .223 to 2.25 inches. My Ruger American uses AR magazines. That length works for it and my AR

@@EverydayReloadingandShooting My question how did you find your length. Did you just high and went down little by little?

Im limited by the length of my magazine, so mostly I load to 2.25 inches. I believe the FMJ actually calls for 2.2 inches. Either one will work. In an AR I don't think it makes any difference with regard to accuracy.
