My Dad told me a story of an interview that Tiger Williams had after the Flying V was released and the reporter asked what he thought of the new jerseys. The Canucks also were coming off of a bad season, and all Williams apparently said was "Last year we played like clowns, this year we are dressing like them".
When they were first introduced...the Kings had full gold unis (including the pants) which made the Kings players look like taxi cabs with legs... The only thing you prayed for with Vancouver was that the game was radio only...but even those jerseys were too ugly for radio...

During their playoff run in 82 their ugliness was somewhat trendy. Also remember Roger Nielson's white towel waving in the crowd.

I love the 90s St Louis jersey. I was near tears when i saw them on the ice wearing it this year. Its such a good jersey, but honestly, I think the white one is lackluster. I love the blue one, have an original and a rerelease.
As you're a well versed hockey fan, I'm sure you're very likely aware of the "trumpet" jersey that wasn't used. Very rare. And because it wasn't used, isnt necessarily a fit for this list. I would love one, myself, but the players sounded like they were borderline striking over that jersey.

The Mooterus was so hideous that they realized pretty quickly they needed to burn them and never speak of them again.
There were entire SEASONS than Nashville wore those mustard monstrosities more than their primary jerseys. It was an awful look that they just refused to acknowledge was an abomination unto Lord Stanley of Preston.
The Burger King jersey is way uglier.

I am eternally grateful to the Devils for beating the fat-assed Texans in 2000, and those Disneyland Ducks in 2003; because they kept the Cup out of the sun belt.

I remember I want to say it was an All Star game segment in the late 80's or early 90's, with Alex Trebek doing a comedy skit, and at one point he described the Canucks flying V jersey as " A chameleon wandered into the Canucks dressing room. And exploded."
The details may be hazy but that (and the jersey itself) have stuck with me all these years.

Man, talking about how ugly Islanders jersey’s are but showing the orange one with the original crest instead of the black one that just says “Isles” across it is downright criminal.
My first thought, too. Shows two jerseys for them at first and another later, and none of them are that one.
The 5 worst:
5: Dallas (Mooterus)
4: Los Angeles (Burger King)
3: Anaheim (Wild Wing)
1: Tie: Vancouver (Flying V), Nashville (Grey Poupon)
and the reason those two are tied at the top is sheer volume of on ice appearances. Even finding action photos of the other three is relatively rare. Those two were worn so often it is incredible.

Gus The slug is pretty bad, but the turd burger might be worse. As a Sabres fan, we have multiple bad options to choose from. 😬 At least we’re going back to royal blue next season, so the jerseys should look good even if we’re trash in the standings.

@@c0stathecraycraygreek459 The slug gets a bad rap, mostly because Buffalo announced at the time (back in 2006) that they were going back to blue and gold (after a decade wearing black and red), but then brought out those instead of the royal blue originals many were hoping for. The turd burger is the only Sabres jersey that I actually had any legitimate dislike for.

The whole ugly thing is so subjective because look at the ugly Christmas sweater. It’s almost “hip” or trendy to wear ugly stuff. Just look at runway models, they’re constantly wearing ugly stuff.
Christmas sweaters are for an occasion, and runway models are more for art, people aren't actually wearing that shit on the day to day.

I'm an Oilers fan and I absolutely hate the road construction jerseys. Orange is a secondary colour for the Oilers, not a primary colour.

The Calgary Flames horse is beautiful to me. Being born in the year of the firehorse according to the Chinese calendar, I saw that jersey one Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada and decided I had to have it. First time I wore it, it scared little children.
OK, not a jersey but you need to throw in the full-length Cooperalls the Flyers wore in '81 - major fail.

That Arizona jersey is one of my favorites along side the other Kachina jersey. Also I 100% agree on that particular Stars jersey. It was horrible in my opinion, way to plain for a team who's jersey's are normally pretty cool looking with exception to a few(The Winter Classic 2020 jersey for instance which looks like complete shit, and the 03-06 Thirds jersey with that god awful bull thing logo on the front).
Note on the 03-06 Thirds Jersey for Dallas, The San Antonio Rampage use a revised version of that old logo and it looks fantastic

I think it would be interesting to look at which mid-90's third and current stadium series abomination are actually aesthetically pleasing. I love when teams modernize - whether it's improving an existing design or modernizing a historical look - but I think I can count 3rd jerseys that I like on one hand. I do like the idea of having different jerseys but most are just poorly done.

Glad to see you agree with me about Old Blasty, Shannon. I literally have no idea why some Flames fans want that thing to come back. And I also had the EXACT same thought as yourself, when they unveiled it on local news in Calgary in what.... 1998? 1999? I was 9 or 10, watching the news with my Dad, and the curtain came down with all the Flames and effects and blah blah blah.... I said to my Dad "Is that supposed to be a dragon?" He said "I think its supposed to be a Horse because of the Stampede." Definitely an early childhood hockey memory that sticks out.

The 2019 Winter Classic for the Hawks is a favorite from the fans it was a design Hawk fans wanted for year in an outdoor jersey I am glad it is now the Hawks Heritage jersey they wear for about 4 times this season.
Any jersey that Anaheim has is ugly. Period.

I've gotta be honest, a lot of the ones you've shown are some of my all-time favorite jerseys. That Colorado Rockies especially. I think that's gorgeous. That St. Louis Blues is among my favorite Blues jerseys. As far as the ducks go, I'll take anything with that logo on it over the new logo. And finally, I will take the Gortons fisherman Islanders jersey over the boring blue and orange seal EVERY day of the week.
I’ve always thought that the Lighthouse from the shoulder of the Islanders Capt. Fishsticks jersey would have made a good main logo.

It's the same shade of green of the classic Mighty Ducks colors. I don't know why it looks that far blue in the video.

I have been considering a fanatics NYI Fisherman for a while. I haven't been able to bring myself to move on it, because I've heard people tell me fanatics logos crease easily and permanently. Have you heard of, or had that happen? You are 100% right. If you can't fork over at least $250 you can't get that jersey in a CCM or Starter.
The Preds mustard jerseys always been one of my favorites. Would love a snapback in that style
HOnestly could care less about this video but as a Nashville preds fan, since the franchise was formed, I can say one of our favorite jerseys was the one you picked out. It’s a classic out here. Not sure what you see wrong with it.... it’s everything you want from a vintage jersey.
Shannon, can you tell how "wide" a hockey jersey should be for say, fan usage at home? I'm 6'1 (186cm) tall and quite slim, is 26"(pit to pit) jersey too big? Could you give some pointers? Thanks.
Have you done a breakdown of total number of NHL jerseys owned, which ones you bought, which ones were gifted to you, money spent per year, anything like that? I "finished" my collection (at least one jersey for each current team) with 14 jerseys totaling $570 since September 2017. Fullmoonjerseys was a big help.

For the Oilers current home jersey, I think if they went with the royal blue instead of the navy blue, it could have looked a lot better. It would have made it so there wasn’t such a drastic contrast.
Chicago’s black and white classic is awesome! Maybe stitching would have helped...
horror/thriller author sez: As a lifelong student of design and diehard Blues fan, I'd say you're spot-on with most of your assessments (NAILING that God-awful Blues jersey with the rounded-edged Blue Note featuring "St. Louis," the inexplicable use of red, and the nightmarish slant of both striping and numbers; can't see these jerseys without thinking of Yzerman's crushing double OT goal). That being said, think you misfired on several, including Carolina (while the "storm warning" flags work better as shoulder patches than stripes, the abstract logo is destined to be a classic), Chicago (striking overall design; best throwback jersey of the bunch), Edmonton (actually like the orange), L.A. (while the overall design is dubious, think the fierce-looking "King's Head" would make a great logo if it were larger and centered), and Vancouver: along with Phoenix's original "kachina" jersey, a bold, ahead-of-its-time statement that is destined to be a classic.
