  • Finished Michael Crichton's The Lost World, and I gotta say...it's WAY better than the movie, The Lost World: Jurassic Park. I love Steven Spielberg, but it seems they really departed the source material for their Jurassic Park sequel.

    Funny how no one who has reviewed this book got it right. I've heard no one mention complexity theory or self-organizing behavior which are key to the novel.

      It was a good book and I can't believe they barely used it for the movie. But I'm so glad I read it and know how the story should've gone. Thank you so much for watching!

    I like in the movie how In Gen did have a whole team of guys that was pretty cool, i thought Dodgson only having a few guys with him as he went around and collected eggs wasn't as interesting. However, i love that Dodgson and Biosyn where the villains in this book. I think after The Lost World movie came out the only logical kind of human villains that they could have had in the film franchise would be Dodgson and Biosyn. It would have been cool if the theme park in Jurassic World was started by Dodgson and Bioysin!

    I’m a child of the 80s and read this along with JP countless times. I was obsessed with dinos, computers, and genetics. I still read parts of them quite often, and can’t wait to read them to my daughter in a few years.

    I just finished reading the book for the first time a couple weeks ago while with a friend on vacation. I kept updating him about the adventures of the "bicycle idiot" from when Levine chased the T-Rex on a bicycle. Got him laughing every time and by the end, we were both genuinely surprised Levine survived.

    I wanted more about the carnotaurus they were so interesting and cool and they were feared by other dinos and only really showed up at night kinds disappointed we never got more of them besides one killing diego

      I don't know if i buy carnotaurus being able to camouflage..i feel like its basically impossible for scientists to know if dinosaurs could do that from just their bones but i don't know..that was maybe too much of a stretch for me maybe.

    I hate to rain on your parade, but I think Michael Crichton wrote himself into a corner with the Lost World of Jurassic Park book.
    Now don't get me wrong I love the books, but something is a mis when I finished reading them.
    For example: At the end of Jurassic Park we are left with Isle Nublar destroyed and Dinosaurs on the mainland of Costa Rica, and which is never address in the Lost World book. Other than the Costa Rica military burning the remains of the dinosaurs that wash up on shore.
    Another thing to note is the DX virus. As you may remember the DX virus was causing the dinosaurs to die at a young age. To which explains Dr. Malcom mentioned how smaller the dinosaurs were. When compared to his visit to the other island, and it was more than likely the dinosaurs were going to die off again.
    Also and this is the most important part is Steven Spielberg, Michael Crichton, and Universal Studios had all signed a contract to make 6 movies. with the way the Lost World had ended there's no way to write a 3rd book. Also the actor who played as Dodson he went jail, so pretty sure the Steven Spielberg team had to rewrite the story Lost World.
    P.S. if you want a better version of the Lost World of Jurassic Park then look Tops Comic books. According to most the Tops Comic books of Jurassic Park and Lost World of Jurassic Park includes all of the deleted scenes that were cut out of the movies.

    While I did like the lost world novel a lot, it would not have been a good film if they adapted it too closely. The book had a lot of talk of animal behaviou and evolution, while I enjoyed all that theory talk, it would not hold the attention of the audience. The film is pretty much a loose adaptation of the novel. If I can pick 1 part from the novel to have made it into the film, it would definitely be Sarah and kelly on the motorcycle chasing the raptor with they key stuck in its mouth.

    • @ChrisDurban
      @ChrisDurban  5 років тому +3

      That scene with them chasing the raptor was freaking epic! Loved it! I agree, this would've been a harder direct adaptation because of all the talking and explaining. But overall, like the raptor chase, there was so much they could've done. And the ending of the book was far better than a loose t-rex in San Diego.

    I remember reading this book when it first came out and I was really young, probably 10 years old (and never read it since), and whenever I watch the movie I still remember how different the book was, and how disappointing the movie was when I first saw it. It was totally the first book I read that got made into a movie. I might just go back and read it again now, I remember it being a really good book, even as a 10 year old!

    Subbed👍 I enjoyed both Jurassic park books so much that I find myself going back to them. I like Crichton’s style of writing and the theme/world building of this man-made bio horror (for lack of a better term). I haven’t come across another book that recreates that same sense of suspense and intrigue. BTW, I do agree about Malcom’s morphine-induced ramblings. I live in Japan 🇯🇵 and bought a Japanese translation of this book for cheap on amazon to practice my reading comprehension but his ramblings in my second language made me put the book down for a little break and a nap lol 😂 😴

    I have read both the books and just wanted to know if all the dinosaurs on Site B are doomed because of the disease? The characters mentioned at the end of the book mentioned that compys and raptors are spreading the disease and it will slowly spread throughout the herbivores. Also didn't understand the island having a large carnivore population, why is that significant?

    • @ChrisDurban
      @ChrisDurban  3 роки тому

      It's been awhile since I read it, but if memory serves the virus was taking out those dinos. I think the carnivores had a large population because of how aggressive they were.

    • @ghouse1239
      @ghouse1239 3 роки тому

      @@ChrisDurban Correct, the disease was not allowing dinosaurs to mature fully and they died. As I understood, this was only happening with some herbivores as the tyrannosaurs and the raptors were atleast seemed to have fully grown but the explanation for the spread of this disease happened during the last 5 minutes of the book and seemed a bit hurried to me which was weird. Looks like the dinosaurs on site b will just die over time due to this disease which is so sad especially considering what happened in the first book. The raptors seemed excited to leave the island at the end of the first book but they later get bombed on and killed, such a weird and sad ending.

    I recently re read both Jurassic novels and I used to think the movie was better but my opinion has changed lol, I think the novel is more interesting and better done than the movie. The Lost World is just purely Michael Crichton being critical of modern science practices, which whether you agree with it or not it is well written. And I think the novel does have a decent amount of cons (no interaction between hero and villains, some dumb plot stuff) and it’s not as good as the first one but this has made me want to read more Crichton for sure.

    We may not have needed san Diego to Rex, but damn it looked good lol. It also brought validation to a currently discredited Ian Malcolm, setting him up in a prestigious enough position to speak to congress in the new ones

    Yeah the book is a fantastic read as well as the first and are my favourite books, I find them so immersive and enjoyable to read. I love the setting of an untouched Island jungle to me is such a cool setting but to then add Dinosaurs just tops it off and makes it perfect for me. The journey of these characters and the adventure they go on feels like it's your own witch just goes to show how well written both books were. Can't say enough how much I love these books.
    A few issues I have with The Lost World though is that it feels a tad rushed and some scenes feel as though Michael remembered a film was going to be adapted from the book or at least used for reference so it felt like he had to write very action focused.. movie material basically. For example the motorcycle chase with the raptors where Kelly and Sarah were chasing after them trying to shoot one or something. It felt out of place and over the top for the sake of it potentially being used for the film like the film people had spoken to him prior and been like oh try add some scenes we can use for the film you know some cool action scenes that sort of thing.
    I can't help but think some scenes like that would play out differently or even happen at all without the lingering knowledge of a movie adaptation. Motorcycle scene wasn't bad or anything, just for me at least didn't fit so well with how the raptors were written and how much of a great threat they were to then have a young girl shooting at them on the back of a motorcycle at full speed just felt off as I'm sure they should have been both ripped to pieces.
    Arby in the cage with the raptors I think it lasted way to long.
    Eddies death also felt very dragged out (literally) his remains kept turning up or kept being seen as the raptors dragged him everywhere and it became a bit like ok we get it he's dead. It felt like the book kept wanting to point out how gruesome it was, also as haunting and as sad as Eddies death was it seemed to lack the punch most other death scenes gave. I think maybe because it was kinda predictable that if anyone was gunna die there it would be Eddie and you just knew by reading the scene that someone had to have died in that situation to keep the raptors being this ultimate threat. So when it did happen I was already prepared.
    I think the only other nitpick I can really remember is some lines of dialogue felt a bit off for the character can't remember what it was about but it felt like it was said to create a debate to happen for us to read something like that but nothing to impact the book.

    • @ChrisDurban
      @ChrisDurban  5 років тому +1

      The Lost World was much weaker overall than the first book. I agree with you some scenes felt rushed and written to be used in a movie. Which is hilarious seeing as how the movie ignored the whole book lol!
      Yet, the book was so much stronger than the movie. So hitting it from that perspective was so much better.

      Durbania I still do really enjoy The Lost World film but the book is absolutely better. I would love to see a sort of spinoff JP film that takes the books scene by scene and adapts it for the big screen. It might not do much for casual viewers as there's a lot of talk of theories and evolution etc but I think they'd do well enough and for fans of the books it would be a dream come true.

    I mean, unpopular opinion, I liked the San Diego ending. Not only did we get a lot of fan service with the buck wrecking house, but it was a major wake up call. Jurassic Park was one thing, that was a storm and corporate espionage. The rex in San Diego? That was all Ingens arrogance. The arrogance of thinking you create such a powerful animal and control it so easily.

    The novel is soooo much better than the movie. Which may explain why I hate the movie and can never keep straight Parts 2 and 3, because I enjoyed the novel so much and then the sequel movies came out and were garbage.
