For those of you who are confused. At 9:02 white(Magnus)moves his king at first to D4, and this is a terrible move because it allows black to move his bishop to F2 checking the king, forcing him to move and then taking the rook on the same diagonal. So Magnus tried to correct for this by playing C4 however this was not allowed as he already played D4

Dawa Moore So, he was disqualified because he let go of the piece and grabbed it again to move it over? Is that right? The other guy was being a bitch about it because he knows he could've lost?
kendall you are twisting it the wrong way. The match finished the moment Carslen put his king on d4 (not literally but it was a blunder). It took him sth like 0.2s to realize his mistake so he decided to reposition his king in hopes that nobody will notice he already moved (which was not the case).
I laughed my ass off at that part. Magnus was like, "wtf are you talking about?? That never happened." Then old dude got up to correct him, and Magnus was like, "ok ok, I can see you don't play with mulligans, that's fine, what evs bro."
For those that still don't understand , besides a rule violation of moving a piece and letting it go than moving it again ....The first square that Magnus moved the king to was d4 and had it stayed there it loses instantly ...Black would play Bishop f2 check and when Magnus moves his king Black picks up the rook on the b6 square .If you fast forward to around 10:05 you can see it very clearly and you can see Savchenko pointing at the king that at the rook probably telling Magnus you must keep the king on d4 and I win the rook with Bishop f2
If anyone is wondering why he lost. His opponent said "that was 2" meaning or referring to the rule. And magnus was confused then nods understanding. You can't move twice.
He didnt move twice, he changes a vertical move to a diagonal one. The rule is that once you let go of a piece, you cannot touch it again even if you are just changing your move to something else while its still your turn.
A move is complete when the player moving the piece removes his hand from the piece. In the video, Carlsen is seen moving his King from the square d3 to the square d4, placing the piece at the square d4 and taking his hand off the piece thereby completing his move. And then immediately within a fracture of a second, after realizing that that was not the right move, moved his King from d4 to c4. It is a classic case of touch-move violation.
That last moment when magnus know his gonna lose..and the only option now is to slap his opponent but settle down instead cuz a lot of old guy watching.
I feel like since he didn’t touch the timer and the second placement was still a legal move it should have been fine. I get that the moment you let go of the piece is your move... but it seems like an ugly way to win.
Lance Belaong you clearly didn’t read the second part of my comment. Anyway what I’m implying is that the rule of letting go of your piece makes sense in classical chess, but in blitz where a huge factor is running out of time, the clock seems to be a more legitimate source to set your move. That being said, I understand why the rules are the way they are, so you can’t make a bunch of fake moves to confuse your opponent. In this case, that clearly wasn’t Carlsen’s objective, so I understand why he gets so upset when his opponent chose to make such a petty challenge just to get an easy “win”.
Guys it's not of that sort as most of u thinking. Not a illegal move. He touched his king played kD4 Nd dropped it for a while which is blunder move as Bf2 will take White's rook for free and then black could easily progress wid a plus bishop nd win it. So carlsen suddenly saw Bf2 coming and pretend he doesn't dropped his rook at kD4 Nd moved it Kc4 opponent claimed that u dropped it on d4 becoz he was about to play bf2. So carlsen accepted he dropped and if he dropped then no point in playing as black will be easily winning wid plus bishop. So carlsen resign it on that spot. If he wanted to continue he can but he has to continue it with kd4. Nothing illegal in it. It's just he made blunder
It's a illegal move. U must be high on cocaine to make a blunder like that. Unless you're living somewhere that cocaine is legal. But then I wonder why your watching chess!
its not snitching when you're the one having a disadvantage. they are adversaries in a game of chess. snitching would be if someone from the audience would inform the arbiter. ofc a player will call out a rule break from the player he plays against.
@@TheStevenRocha once you take your hand off a piece you can't change your mind. He made his move, removed his hand, then touched it and moved it again. That's a serious foul in chess and caused him to lose. It might seem like a trivial thing, but that's professional chess.
@@TheStevenRochaThe touch-move rule in chess specifies that, if a player deliberately touches a piece on the board when it is their turn to move, then they must move or capture that piece if it is legal to do so. If it is the player's piece that was touched, it must be moved if they have a legal move. I hope that helps. You should play...there is no other game like it. Absolutely the best board game ever created.
@@craigpaulson3503If once you take you hand of the piece its a move and you can't change it why do you have to click on the clock? Can't they have someone else taking care of the time?
I think Magnus quickly realised that moving the King to D4 would be an issue as the opponent would give a check with Bishop at F2 and eventually capture the Rook. So, he would have tried to move the King to C4 but then it would be considered a double move.
It was a blunder, it happens. Very pity and sad. :-) The opponent thought " Oh really I win ? I enjoy my opponent's blunder I prepared myself for the loss anyway".
whats the point of the clock if the touch rule is enforced, they really gotta update these rules the end of the turn should be when he presses the clock
@@sadmillionare3542 You are crazy. If that was allowed people would move all kinds of pieces on board as long, they don't press the clock. What a mess. The rules as they stand right now make far more sense than your suggestion.
I don't play chess, I don't even know both their name. But even I know the winner, that guy who moves the chess twice in row basically loss. Simple logic lol.
The face magnus makes isnt out of anger, it's actually him telling his opponent to shush because they arent allowed to talk to eachother. You can see him lighten up when he realizes he made a mistake and was called out for it.
Mmm doesn't make sense to me. At the instant he release/retouch the piece he necessarly knows he is in grey zone, it is a basic rule. Like a soccer player touching the ball with hands. For me it's either a simple and ordinary "What ?" when you hear nothing and frown, or a more ambivalent reaction.

@@hansdekorver7365 It's a reference to the Avengers and also I'm saying the reason the King is moving is because they are in an endgame and the King has to get involved in order to control squares and queen a pawn ♟
This was a fun game. At 5:11, magnus traps his opponent’s queen. She has nowhere to go. So the only way magnus’ opponent can save his queen is if he sacrifices his knight. So after that, he’s down a piece and Magnus is in a completely winning position. Unfortunately during 9:08, Magnus realizes that him moving his king there would put him in a completely losing position since his opponent can check his king with the bishop and pick up his rook. So he tries to move his king to the correct square, but then he touches it twice and that breaks the rule. So Magnus lost but he was basically in a completely winning position and lost due to a technicality I guess. But rules are rules
Funny thing... The guy claiming to win 2 out of 5 is a troll, obviously, but the funny thing is.. GMs rarely even have 3 wins (counting the one he "gave" Carlsen) out of 5 games... Interesting concept of top level chess.
He dropped the king on d4 which would have allowed the bishop to check on f2 followed by bishop takes rook. He realized that and tried to move the rook to e4 instead, but he was not allowed to since he had already stopped touching the rook when it feel on d4. He resigned because he was going to loose his rook on the next two moves.
To those who didn't get it: Black defended with the accelerated dragon to which White replied with a Maroczy bind. After going for a poisoned pawn and nearly getting his Queen trapped, Black desperado'ed a Knight and reached an endgame where he was the exchange down, banking his hopes on a pawn promotion but ultimately settling for a fortress. Magnus finally blundered by missing a skewer which would see him lose his rook and tried to correct his move - but as they are playing under touch-move rules, he had to accept defeat. Hope this clarifies things.
The thing is when you already placed a figure you can much better imagine how the game will go on this move. You can for example place some moves looking which is the best one without that rule.
I was watching this on a big screen tv. First 30 seconds or so was wishing that they put a 2d board to see the moves. Didn’t realize it was there all along and just had to turn my head to see it.
For those who might not understand 9:05, he completed his bad move (first) and gave his rook for free because Black would check and take White rook. And that is it, he lost the game as you can think twice but not move twice
@@osamayousef9433 what machine u meant? The chess clock to keep timing and if you see the backbround board, it shows Carlsen first move, not the adjusted one
Carlsen handled it with grace, though. He didn't try to deny he did it. He was clearly disappointed in himself, but realized what he'd done and accepted his loss with class. It's disappointing, but anyone who has ever played tournament chess has made that mistake at one point or another.
I don't understand why Magnus lost. In a blitz u can take your hand off a piece and then change the move if u didn't push a clock button. For example, Kasparov with Nakamura in St.Louise. Garry change his knight move. Also, i personally watched how Firouzja change his move in game with Jan Nepomniachtchi in World Blitz and Rapid Championship 2018 and then he lost in few moves. But he did that.
Its european rules. In american style blitz you can still change your move before you press the clock. As far as I know not many tournaments are played according to such rules ( at least not outside usa) Edit:Grammar

If anyone is wondering why he lost. His opponent said "that was 2" meaning or referring to the rule. And magnus was confused then nods understanding. You can't move twice.
He was NOT confused...he knew exactly what he did as soon as he did it.

Atleast you’re XOTWOD
I feel like since he didn’t touch the timer and the second placement was still a legal move it should have been fine. I get that the moment you let go of the piece is your move... but it seems like an ugly way to win.
i thought the same thing. But then again, they should slow down just a tad. make too many mistakes trying to be too fast
Bruh he let go of the king thats why

Carlsen handled it with grace, though. He didn't try to deny he did it. He was clearly disappointed in himself, but realized what he'd done and accepted his loss with class.
