Gosh, I remember how exciting it was to wake up on Christmas morning, run down the stairs, look under the tree, and unwrap my first copy of Itoi Shigesato no Bass Tsuri No. 1.
The creator of this series no longer has anything to do with the brand. He has recently started an indie company with some former Atlus/SEGA employees. He makes mostly mobile games that are gatchas but there's a small gem that's a spiritual successor to Custom Robo called SYNAPTIC DRIVE I think it's for Steam and digital only Nintendo Switch eShop. Gosh, I went through the entire comment section and there's so many that say they want a new Custom Robo... I hope they support the creator by getting his game.
I've been following this challenge for a while, but I wanted to personally single out this episode for praise. Having played the Gamecube _Custom Robo,_ heck, even before that, seeing _Custom Robo_ trophies in _Smash Bros._ piqued my interest in this series, but since the first two games never got released outside of Japan it's hard to find info on them, in English anyway. This video is the perfect length for a summary, going just in-depth enough to hit all the plot points and has conveyed what a playthrough is like. I honestly don't think this comprehensive a look at this game exists in the English world and I greatly appreciate that such a thing now exists. The same will likely go for several other Japanese only games in the future.
Unbelievable the amount of games in this series I've somehow never heard of (or didnt know there was an English patch). So thank you so much for this series, just for introducing me to so many good games!
It's one of these game that I was following and was disappointed that it didn't release in English, with the low number of games, especially RPG on the system :(
I enjoyed the GameCube one, I can't remember how JRPG-y it was though. And I guess if you were looking for something to compare this to, it's KINDA like a 1 v 1 version of Power Stone, but faster paced.
Custom Robo: Battle Revolution for the Gamecube is one of my favorite games on the console. The battle formula is just so good. So many combinations of weapons and movement options, and genuinely requiring different strategies for different enemies.
Same reason why tons of successful game concepts are sitting on the shelf while major companies blow billions on failed ideas. Huge disconnect between what people want and what studios and production companies executives want. The next Tenchu? What about Twisted Metal? Or Left 4 Dead 3? All games that would make millions if they made them but here we are.
It's the same game, just like how Animal Crossing was originally a Japanese Exclusive N64 game this also made the localization as a port on the Gamecube
Such a good game. I replayed it when you uploaded to your other channel and actually got to finish it. For anyone interested in this game; if your game crashes during any dialogue. Wait for the dialogue to go across the text box before mashing A. The crash happens if the text has animations like shaking. I believe this only happens at the final tournament and some flavour text throughout the game.
The gameplay in this game has more in common with modern games of today than of other games of the time. This was a very sophisticated and well polished blend of different types of game genres in a single game, for its time period.
1:28 I actually had a TV like that. It was old at the time, we used it out in tbe garage because it was the only place there was enough space. It was a CRT and probably very heavy I was too young to lift it. It eventually exploded and died. But it was awesome. Also we mainly used it to play N64 games on.
I grew up in Japan in the early 2000s and was fortunate enough to play this on N64 as a kid. It was my first region -locked hack (you literally had to hack off pieces of the cartridge to fit a North American N64) and neither my friend or i could read Japanese, so we made up our own story the whole way 😂 I think we named the final boss "King Bob" and made up all sorts of lore for him as he popped up throughout the game. If you've never played this one, it's definitely worth acquiring. Makes me sad that my original copy was lost to time.
we went to the back room of city hall. naturally team rocket revealed themselves. Tetsuo then thankfully revealed himself. Akria then manifested. it was a whole NEo Tokyo thing
Custom Robo is one of these forgotten Nintendo series. It is not so surprising you didn’t heard of it. It has a little acknowledgement in Smash Bros (with trophies and stuff) though. There is AaGamecube game, and also a DS game. Both are very good and they got released outside of Japan.
Yea, those TV's that you could only look at straight on or half the screen would disappear. They actually used to advertise the 'viewing angle' in the marketing. Gotta pay that extra $1,200 if you want to look at the TV more than 30 degrees off-center.
My dad had one of these that was a tube tv. It was probably 55 or 60 inches screen size. I can confirm it did weight about 500 pounds. It took 4 grown men to move it.
One of my FAVOURITE n64 games. Very UNFORTUNATE we did not get an International release. I have was fortunate enough to acquire the game and a JAPANESE N64 from a Pawn shop. I REALLY enjoyed the game, the ONLY problem, was the language. I literally had to scan my screen via Google translate on my phone. I would like to know where you’ve gotten the translated patch, so I can play it.
Thanks to learning of it in this video I just went and downloaded the patched rom and played through the entirety in one sitting. As soon as I watched this, I could tell it was essentially a megaman battlenetwork foreshadower. A lot of influence from this game in battlenetwork as well as OG pokemon. The music is incredible. Highly recommended for any fans of those series
Seems like a great game, lots of effort and content out into it. It's nice to see it. So many games of this era has so little effort and content out into them. The fighting reminds me of Power Stone on the DC.
Custom Robo (GameCube) is easily one of my top 5 couch party games with my homies. None of them had ever heard of it and now it’s always at our LAN parties. I didn’t know when I was younger that it was a sequel! I found out later in my life once the GameCube was older.
Never heard about this game, but it looks fun. Games like this is why a challenge like this is so interesting. You always discover some gems here and there.
They look cool, but image quality on those giant rear-projection CRTs from the 90s was brutally terrible. My uncle still has one in his basement. Also, multiplayer mode in the Gamecube Custom Robo game is so good. Almost GOAT-worthy
ThaB I want you to know that I love all of these videos, even when it's some goofy Japanese simulator game I've never heard of. Maybe even moreso because I learn about crazy games I didn't know existed! Thanks for keeping it going, you're awesome.

@@starpetalarts6668 wrong. The characters, plot & setting are completely different. Only a handful of characters from this game are in _Battle Revolution_ as cameos.
I hadn’t really realized just how much time this challenge was taking up, even though the timer is always there. As of this recording, Thab was at over 50 full days played, so over 150 workdays, assuming an eight hour shift. He’s probably approaching 100 days now in real time, and the equivalent of a full work year doing nothing but playing N64 games. Which, judging from a good chunk of these games, isn’t as glamorous as it sounds.
As an Armored Core player let me tell you I’m unironically glad this franchise didn’t last long enough to have proper online. If you’ve tried Armored Core 6 online, there’s meta builds that crush almost everything else and it ruins the experience unless you wanna get really cracked with a build you came up with. If they weren’t smart the same would probably happen with Custom Robo online. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we have a new Armored Core game for modern consoles, but the online in mech games needs help if we want a new Custom Robo with online multiplayer

Everyone acts all hard until the “and I mean all of them” hits. He really means all of them.
"I'm going to play every N64 game...
*Everyone yawns*
"...and I mean all of them."
*Screaming chimps intensify*
That's because Thab truly is a beast
So what’s the catch?
YES
That's a rear projection television. They were still pretty heavy, but not as if it had been a CRT

I used to have one of those way back when myself. Thing was huge as hell and held for longer than most things do nowadays.
Good times.
The sad part is that TV was probably just in need of a cap kit or new yolk. All of these TV's thrown away and destroyed, which is such a shame.

Beat this game with the Eng patch on emulator. One of the best N64 games of all time, some type of reboot would be dope.
The creators of the series left Nintendo and made their own game that is similar called SYNAPTIC DRIVE so I guess kind of a reboot already occurred?
The way you loathed Fukashi by the end was hysterical... He'll probably cry when he reads this...
I always look forward to 0:04
Aww Harley! I have heard her barking for years! Lol, nice to have a little life update on her 😊
Oh shi, Earthbound's creator had a fishing game?!
earthbound guy also used to be a regular judge on the original iron chef. itoi just does whatever he wants lol

It's rare that I see a new to me n64 game that I actually want to try.
The creator went on to make his own Indie company... his recent game SYNAPTIC DRIVE is the spiritual successor to the Custom Robo series.
I kinda miss the catch phrase "*number*, what is that?!" at the end thou :D

Weird I just finished the GameCube one lol so good. So Pervy. Good writing and fun customization
dude the part about multiplayer is so real. I was able to play the game that they released on gamecube. So disappointing to have to play alone.
That TV is more likely modeled after a projection television from the late 90s. Mostly air in there. :)
Yep, my Uncle had one. The picture was so washed out but projection was the only way to get a TV that size back in the day.
@aleckermit a good projection TV had a pretty nice picture for the time. The bulb was probably going out.

The final vs Hayao should be a highlight in itself Wowza
I loved custom robo on the GameCube, I had no idea there was a n64 entry in the series! I'm definitely going to check this one out
It's the same game, they ported it to GameCube. Check out SYNAPTIC DRIVE it's the spiritual successor and made by the original team on Custom Robo.
Damn this game looks great, I would have loved this as a kid - congrats on the puppies!!!

Man, I wish more N64 games had a visual style of the overworld of this game.

Congratulations Harley! Still loving this series, Thab. I'll be disappointed when it's finished in 17 years
I would compare this to a mix of Pokémon and a kids version of Armored Core

An equivilant to 1 month and 20 days of continuous game play. That in itself is a feat.
