David Haskell left us way too soon. Godspell is never the same without him. I knew him in the role in the original Cherry Lane play, the road show and the movie. I have never seen this performance till 2024...I am so blessed for modern technology. Thank you!
After a lifetime of adoring Godspell (and doing it in High School like half the world), I just found out TODAY that Mr. Nathan (Exec. Producer of Bones, a show which I enjoy) is THE Stephen Nathan that played Jesus in the original Godspell! God knows that that recording (as well as the movie version w/Victor Garber as Jesus) played a major part in my developmentr when I was a teen ager in the 70's and as an actor later on in life. Way to go Stephen!
Indeed, were it not for scoring the role of the Courier, he was the first choice for the role of Jesus in the film of Godspell, whose shooting schedule coincided with that of 1776. (Might be misremembering that, but I seem to have heard that a long time ago.)
"Momma Look Sharp" is one of my favs from 1776. It points out that underneath all of the political so socio-economics about the arguments for or against Independence, men and boys are dying, and it's the mothers who have to go find them.
Thank you for this! I’ve seen the movie with Victor Garber a lot, but I’ve always wanted to get a look at Stephen Nathan doing it! I listen to both the original cast and movie soundtracks a lot!
I was casted as Judas about a week ago, and this by far is my favorite. This version is amazing, and personally this version is better than the movie. I'm hoping our choreography is exactly like this one!
I remember seeing this on TV. The show is available on video as "That's Singing: Best of Broadway." It had Ethel Merman, the original cast of "Grease," it was just a great show. :)
We had to learn and sing this for a school music competition when I was 11. It was hard to learn and sing, and the judge said he couldn't hear the words very well because it was so fast. I never knew where the song had come from until I saw this. Even with these pros performing it's not always easy to hear what the words are!
absolutely. You have to have a keen ear. But they sing it faster the second time. The similar approach with the Major General song in Pirates of Penzance. When they really pick up the tempo you've already heard the lyrics once so it's not as much work understanding. However you have to have incredible diction and breath control to pull it off.
Like this a lot - and props to both for singing so fast while also doing rigorous dance moves and twirling canes. David Haskell is amazing, although perhaps I prefer Victor Garber's portrayal of Jesus a bit more.
What the heck happens at 0:41? Nathan comes in with the accompaniment, but drops a beat after singing "deep blue", yet is still with the accompaniment for "You bet that Job". That beat was apparently missing from the accompaniment (which seems prerecorded) and Nathan knew this and compensated for it. Weird.
There is a time difference between this video and the movie. The movie was made 1973 This video is from much later. Another comment says the clip iis from a 1985 special called "The Best of Broadway"
I love this clip. The closed captions, however, are insane! Did an "AI" generate the captions. Gee the song lyrics are online you could just cut and paste.
Because Victor Garber is the only actor that could ever play such a gentle and beautiful Christ. Nothing wrong with Stephen Nathan's performance, but....
@momofdougie What do you mean "some words arn't (sic) even in the real song"? I have the Original Off-Broadway Cast CD of this show and they sung the same words. Are you talking about how they skip over the last chorus where the entire cast joins them?
My right ear was missing out on the fun, but wow was this good! I'm sad they made it super fast and cut things out (probably because it was a live performance on a show), but it was good otherwise!
yes, your ten so you know better than everyone else on this page, good analogy i think, how about u 1 stop being jealous that they can sing better than you, and ok stephen said "when you go to heaven" instead of "when you get to heaven" that is the only line where those words were not used in the entire movie, and yes, they skipped the dialogue at the end, it doesn't matter, it was a commemoration, not the movie, so stop complaining and deal with it

My left ear enjoyed this performance very much.
So it wasn't my headphones.

Oh thank God, I thought I was having a stroke.

How young David Haskell is! God rest his talented soul.
It's weird seeing him without a beard lol
@@tjryeguy92 ikr 😆
Rest In Peace David Haskell
Man, I can watch this over and over, I'm playing Jesus tomorrow in my school production!
You're lucky you can have religion in school! Must not be a public school.
I love this, i'm so sad that David passed away in 2000 :(
I discovered this song because Gaten Matarazzo and Joshua Colley were singing this. And it was the best!
Just got chills . So great performing these guys in NYC.. It was All for the Best!
My last two brain cells
From the hairstyles it looks like the eighties, David Haskell looks different without his beard from the film.
No one does it better than these two :D
For those who like musicals and have a sharp eye, Stephen Nathan also played the Courier in the film version of "1776". He sang "Momma Look Sharp."

Amen Sarah! I did too. Played the Courier at age 18 in a regional production near SF. But I never had the opportunity to play Jesus. :^(
@@Woody615 yup. agreed. Powerful song.
My older brother (an aspiring actor at the time) took me to see Godspell in 1974, when Jeremy Sage was playing Jesus. Memorable show!
Thank you for this! I’ve seen the movie with Victor Garber a lot, but I’ve always wanted to get a look at Stephen Nathan doing it! I listen to both the original cast and movie soundtracks a lot!

Yes indeed. Lucky Londoners who got to see him w/ David Essex!
Awesome!
LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE Thank you!

Agree. Haskell and Garber had good chemistry.
There needs to be another movie of this. At least a Broadway revival.
LOVE IT
I would like to see a Mexican version with Hector Rivera as Jesus and Ernesto de la Cruz as Judas
Disney needs to get on that as a short film...
And the Abuela Playing Sonnia
im going to sing this in the 02!
Same...i really like our All for the best and we have a female as Judas and i personally think she does it a lot better
first time seeing this 1-4-22
really fun to do aand watch
my groups doin this number yay!!!!
I remember how surprised I was to find out that Stephen Nathan played the Courier in the film version of "1776". I didn't recognize him.
That's why he wasn't in the movie of Godspell. He was busy doing 1776. :-)

i already have! it was way fun!
but it was also hard
@rcktmanil Yay! This is just such a fun show.
I love the orchestration like it sounds so much better than the og lol
SO want to do this number... it looks like a lot of fun.
I liked Victor Garber much better too!
Does anyone know of other "Vaudeville/Musical Hall" songs like this? Thanks :)
im gonna be judas in my show choir xP
I love this clip. The closed captions, however, are insane! Did an "AI" generate the captions. Gee the song lyrics are online you could just cut and paste.

Thank you for posting! What a treat. Do you know the broadcast details on this performance?
Oh wow! This is awesome!
My left ear hurts
Aww thats ok. Thanks for replying ^_^
Why didn't Stephen Nathan do the movie?
Because Victor Garber is the only actor that could ever play such a gentle and beautiful Christ. Nothing wrong with Stephen Nathan's performance, but....
@@exitstageleft6070 Obviously Victor wasn't the only one who could play Jesus, because there is Stephen Nathan.....
Nothing wrong with Stephen Nathan. He was great. But Victor Garber was perfect
I see Jesus got to wear an actual Superman shirt this time

They did cut part of it out however that IS the tempo of the song. It wasn't sped up.
He said crying before sying check the lyrics

eight or nine years ago I was casted like Judas!!!!!!
I'M JUDAS
I agree with Victor Garber being better wholeheartedly.
.....and?
Just one question. Is Stephen Nathan still living? I know David Haskell is no longer with us.
As of December 6th 2019, Stephen Nathan seems to still be with us. :-)
Stephen was the showrunner for Bones
who is joe
Job, he was a guy who was super rich but Satan took it all away as like a test, but he stuck to God and in the end he got twice as much back
Joe mama
What happened to the sound?
1 dislike? Must be the devil.
This guy is no Victor Garber!
.....and?
Yep, I prefer Victor
David looked different without his beard
every actor has their crazy eyes lolol
Original Jesus guy is it?
When I direct it, they will look, not necessarily "act" like clowns. Make up included
most wont get it.....
one person's olive tree is dying.
Garber stupid auto correct

This is so UNFORTUNATELY JEWISH
Victor gabner way better
Yes I agree wholeheartedly
.....and?
You saw Stephen do it in NY in 1971....or .....?
Dude forgot his own song
The two different sides of Theists and atheists .
Not as good as the cast of the movie
Wow, this is so cynical.
