Encampment behind Hamilton city hall told to vacate

  • People living in tents at Hamilton city hall have been given orders by Hamilton bylaw officers to leave their encampment.
As many as 50 or 60 people are living in the tents including Montana-Lee Abela. Abela lives with her emotional support dog, Mylie, and has been homeless for a few years.
Abela says, “I would like to be back home with my family I’m just too embarrassed to go back home. Like, living the way I am right now I want to clean myself up for them.”
Hamilton city bylaw officers served notices on Friday telling them to leave voluntarily. The officers didn’t say what would happen if they don’t go.
Many people living in the encampment tell CHCH News that they have nowhere else to go. Encampment resident Jammy Pierre says, “… It’s frustrating because they haven’t presented any more solutions and I don’t think that setting up a tent should be considered an act of rebellion.”
The people who live there say they don’t know what to expect next but say the bylaw officers indicated they’d be back on Monday following the order for these people to leave. The city has forcibly removed encampments in the past.
The City of Hamilton has since declared a state of emergency over homelessness, and has asked the province for more money to help the people on the street.
Some city councillors say they’re disappointed by the city’s order to clear out the tent community without providing options. Hamilton city council is due to consider a new approach to tent encampments.

They are drug addicts first, and homeless only as consequence. The woman admitted that she has a place to stay with her family. She just wants to be in a place where she can freely buy and use drugs.
They need forced rehab, not free housing.
It’s mind boggling that everyone repeats “the solution is affordable housing” when talking about severe drug addictions

City Hall should be welcoming the homeless, after all, they`re the ones that have allow the housing to get so out of control. City Hall is paid for by taxes, the people own it and the people should be allowed to occupy it during Any emergency.

What I don't understand is when they give the tent people notices to evacuate they don't give them an alternative place to rest , but the city has no problems with large RVs parking at the Hamilton waterfront trust Pier 8 parking lot for years, today there are approximately 4 to 5 large RVs left in the parking lot where people are living in them and not paying any fees, these large RVs are parked right next to the children's playground, these large RVs that have been parked there for years without being harassed or evicted , and are very very creepy and suspicious, hey a child could go missing when you go to the Hamilton waterfront trust roller rink and playgrounds, it's so easy to hide them in one of these parked RVs. Nobody knows who these people are I never see the police ever approach these RVs not one time in 3 years, they don't look like homeless people to me because they have fancy pickup trucks that are worth more than $50,000. Get rid of these creepy possible pedophile RVs off the Hamilton waterfront trust parking lot and away from the children's playground.

@@megatoncellular I noticed that they removed the RVs the day after I posted this comment, everybody at Williams Cafe was completely surprised and how fast the city moves when it wants to move . At least now the children's playground and roller rink is a bit safer without having creeps peep at them through their Windows behind drapes. Hamilton has let in a lot of predators, and hamiltonians are naively way way too trusting.. Hamilton is way behind the times and are NOT aware of the SIGNS that can HARM CHILDREN,
just last year HWT BUILDING (Hamilton water terminal ) tried to put up an lgbtq MAP (minor attracted persons) flag on theirr flag pole in their inside community patio (flags are calling cards), thank God somebody that knew the lgbtq map (pedophile) symbol complained to City Hall immediately and they took that dangerous flag down within hours, but unfortunately for children the HWT building completely inundated last Summer's children's activities( on their community patio) pedaling and promoting lgbtq propaganda, including drag shows with grown men twerking and playing with little children (grooming ).. this rainbow politics and agendas needs to stay away from children, especially if you're going to be calling the area family friendly.
Ps there are no safe spaces for children and and their families that are not drinking the rainbow Kool-Aid.

Portable housing benefits reduce homelessness. Bad behaviour, renovictions, and falling behind on your rent causes homelessness. Bad behaviour is #1. The shelter system in Hamilton can be very sketchy because I was in Hamilton's shelter system for 7 months. I can see why some people sleep on the street.

The only thing that will help alleviate the problem while maintaining a capitalist economic model at this point is for the triple residency bubble to pop and for the market to subsequently collapse, bringing everything back down to affordable levels but throwing the economy into another, even greater recession reminiscent of 2008.

I mean, given that we, "the public," voted for the politicians that allowed the problem of housing unavailability to persist and worsen, or otherwise didn't vote for or didn't run as politicians who tried to resolve the problem, then, yes, it IS rightfully "our problem" to bear.
So long as we people of Hamilton can't unite behind councillors who will help provide housing for these people, then we Hamiltonians will collectively have to bear the brunt of our failure of a social services system; this is because we are privileged enough to be eligible to vote for councillors (you need a fixed address to vote in municipal elections), and thus _noblesse oblige_ dictates we had ought to use our privileges to help those less fortunate than us - i.e. those who *don't* have a fixed address.

@@ontariofirs7347 This is Canada, not the USA, we don't have a constitution, we have a charter of rights and freedom; and while it's true that it has been ruled that the charter does not enshrine a right to housing, it's still being challenged in the courts, so it's not off the table.
Putting it more straightforward, however, it doesn't matter if it's enshrined in law or not, because it is objectively, morally, and economically the right thing to do; guaranteeing everyone access to housing, that is.
The economy is stagnating because no one has disposable income due to the rising cost of housing - if all rent and mortgage rates were capped, and everyone was guaranteed access to at least a room with a bed and a locking door, then the economy could start to flow more now that people don't need to fear not being able to afford rent.
As for the morality aspect - I mean, do I need to explain to you why it is that not making people live on the streets in a city where it can get as hot as 30C in the summer and -40C in the winter is the morally good thing to do?
Objectively, getting them off the street increases their chance of getting off drugs, getting them the mental healthcare they need, getting them back in the workforce, and ultimately getting them contributing to society again - even if they don't get that far, getting them off the street will reduce the sense of lawlessness in the area and thereby increase public safety; in either case, it is objectively a good thing for society that we get these people housed.

    • @Luscinia_Nightengale
      @Luscinia_Nightengale 11 місяців тому

Get a haircut - with what money? They're homeless and unemployed, how will they pay for a haircut or tools to cut their own hair?
Get a real job - how can they do that? You need a fixed address to get hired by most places as employers tend to be biased against the homeless.
You also tend to need a bank account so that you can submit a direct deposit form, but there's no bank that will open an account for someone without proof of address, and that's assuming security even lets them inside the bank at all.
To add further insult to injury, most homeless people are unlikely to have ID on their person as wallets are where those are typically stored, and wallets are ALSO the most commonly stolen personal article; without ID, no employer will hire you because you need to show your SIN and in addition to that, you almost always need to show at least one piece of photo ID corroborating your identity if you want to open a bank account.
Now, you COULD got to service Ontario and Service Canada to get your ID reissued, but the problem there is that these processes cost money, which, again, these people don't have because they're unemployable because they don't have ID; it's a cache 22 wherein no matter what they do, they can never escape there situation without outside help, which the government seems hellbent on trying to avoid doing at all costs.
So, in conclusion, to your question of "Why don't they get a haircut and a real job?" the answer is this; the system is fundamentally set up to PREVENT them from doing EITHER.

Ever heard of Occam's Razor? It is admittedly a fallacious argument, but I feel it's still poignant here; it proposes that most often, the scenario that makes the fewest assumptions is typically the correct answer.
Now, lets go through the list of assumptions here for them to be actors. First, assume they're acting, second, assume there's some benefit to be gained from this performance, third, assume there is someone willing to fund this false story, fourth, assume that no one in the government would call out this false story, fifth, assume that no locals would call out the falsehood, sixth, assume that you can somehow hire enough actors to simulate a large enough homeless population in the city to convince half a million people that there is a homelessness problem in Hamilton.
Now, let's go through the list of assumptions for the scenario in which these are real people. First, assume that homelessness exists. Second, assume these people are homeless.
