Inspire IC1.5 REVIEW + comparison to other COSTCO "knockoff" DIY Peloton bike choices + Assembly

  • The Inspire IC1.5 indoor cycle from costco is a popular DIY Peloton alternative, but COSTCO also has two other indoor cycling bike choices that many people use as a peloton bike alternative. I have full reviews on the other 2 indoor bikes offered in costco stores, the Proform Tour de France CBC, and the Echelon EX4s.

The prices range from $385 for the Proform, to about $500 for the Inspire IC1.5, up to $1000 for the Echelon EX-4s if it's not on sale. Mostly in this video I talk about how the inspire compares to the Proform and the Peloton bike, because the proform costco bike is most similarly priced to the Inspire ic1.5.
In general I think the Inspire ic1.5 is better then the Proform tour de france for a DIY peloton option because the Inspire can be operated completely independent from any proprietary software or screens. The resistance knob on the inspire ic1.5 is a traditional magnetic resistance controlled by a physical mechanism so you don't have to rely on batteries or power from an outlet for the resistance to work.
I have timestamps for this video to help you navigate to the information you need.

Is the inspire ic1.5 the "best" DIY peloton alternative? Well, that remains to be answered, I think it is the best of the 3 costco bikes, but the echelon ex-15, joroto x2, and the sunny 1805, as well as the schwinn ic4 are also great options, and if you want to order a bike online or don't have a costoco membership these are particularly good choices.
We also look at the Inspire ic1.5 app in this video. The bike gives all the important metrics such as cadence, power, and resistance. The max resistance of the inspire ic1.5 is equal to about 65ish on the peloton bike plus based on my testing.
let me know if you want a full inspire ic1.5 peloton conversion chart for the resistance.
The echelon ex-4s is a nicer machine then the inspire ic1.5 but it is also much more expensive and comes with a 10 inch screen. the resistance on the echelon costco bike is stronger then the other two costco indoor bikes and it is also digitally controlled, meaning it will not work if it's not plugged into an outlet. The echelon ex4s is a good option if you wan to join echelon and commit to it, but probably not the greatest bike to make a diy peloton and use the peloton digital app due to the 10 inch screen being mounted to the bike. fyi, this is not a spin bike it is an indoor exercise bike.

I was so happy to see this review. I bought an Inspire IC.5 from the studio in Anaheim Hills and have been using it for a month. I have not tried any other bikes and hearing your review was very informative. I do love the quiet ride it gives. The classes are great. This is so convenient to have in my home. It is allowing me to get back into Spinning since I have been stuck at home during the pandemic. I did buy a set of Shimano pedals online and upgraded the seat, but everything else was great out of the box. The pedals were simple to change out . I keep looking for a gadget to hold the my dumbells or allow a larger water bottle holder. Once I am clipped into the pedals I hate having to stop to get things out of my reach. I am going to try a tall utility cart to roll over during a long ride or class with arm workouts. Everything else on the bike is right there thanks to the tablet /smart phone holder, but a cart will probably do the trick.
I really enjoyed the unboxing and comparison to the Peleton. I still had a desire to try a Peleton but your video showed me I am not missing anything that I can't live without. The huge price tag on that Peleton bike kept me from getting a bike for a year. This was perfect for my budget and one of my favorite instructors from 24 HR fitness is on the Inspire App and I was so surprised. Throw some LED lights up, turn down the lights, crank up the FAN and it's almost as good as being in a Spin class.

I just bought the Inspire 1.5 from my local Costco and I have a question. In the manual you mention about a bluetooth/Ant+ heart rate monitor. Since I happen to have one, I would like to know how do you add the heart rate monitor to the statistics on the app. Cause I fail to see why you mention it in the manual if there is no way to add it to it. Thanks.

Between the ProForm CBC from Costco and the IC1.5 I liked the physical resistance knob on the IC1.5 vs the motor on the ProForm bc I figure the motor will die eventually. Between the Echelon Sport/EX15 and the IC1.5 I liked the echelon more bc it's seat was more stable but it only comes with 1 year warranty. The IC1.5 has a 10 year frame, 3 year parts, 1 year labor warranty and the added peace of mind having purchased it from Costco. So I went with the IC1.5 and I'm happy with it so far.

Greetings - #1, love the channel & content - You're my go-to resource for making my first spin bike purchase and have been watching a lot of your videos over the last month or so.
#2 - If, or when you make a comparison of this bike versus the Echelon EX-15 (Connect / Sport), you might want to point out that as of a recent update to Echelon's Fitness app, apparently you can no longer do free rides without being bombarded with advertisements or the app completely not functioning correctly, or trying to basically get you to purchase their monthly subscription to achieve ride stats, etc. The app has a very high number of negative reviews as of the last couple weeks. That is a huge purchasing decision for a lot of consumers doing a DIY Peloton bike.
I do however, look forward to that comparison video. As a current Costco member, I plan to highly consider this bike (Inspire IC 1.5) as my first bike.
    Thanks!

It seems the lower end Echelons at Walmart cut back their free service from 6 months on the Connect/Sport to 30 days?? What does the Ex-15 give?
The Costco EX4S was on sale at $799 and gives a free year of service normally $999.

Anyway, I agree, the pedals don't give adequate support. do you know of any cage-style pedals you can recommend that do give good support? Also, I noticed you can "pause" the stats on the ride and then resume it. Seems like they might have added that feature so you don't lose your data after you stop pedaling.

    • @Tom-bo4jj

As another poster mentioned, if you download the qdomyos-zwift app and contact the developer he can add you to beta testing which will enable your IC1.5 to connect to his app and then ultimately gives you Zwift connectivity. You can run the qdomyos-zwift app on your phone and run the Zwift app on a tablet or vice versa and that will enable your connection from the bike to Zwift. So yes, you can do it through a creative method. I personally have done that and enjoy it quite a bit, but yes you do need two separate mobile devices to do this as one device will connect to your bike, while the other device will connect to the device that is connected to your bike so that it can see the metrics. Odd but true and works well for me.
