The Portage Flyer, aka the Huntsville & Lake of Bays Railway, is based in Huntsville, Ontario. Operated as a part of the Muskoka Heritage Place, the railroad runs back and forth on a 3/4 mile-long segment of 42" gauge track with 0-4-0T #2. The Huntsville & Lake of Bays Railway Society has been in charge of the steam railroad since 2000.
Special thanks to Michael Hostetter for filming. - Авто та транспорт

So good to finally see a proper video on this operation. This little railway seems so often overlooked. From time to time I do a google search to check up on these little tank engines, lovely video.
It was a nice place to check out
Hey I work there! Thanks for featuring this little train! Lots of people don’t know about it
Glad you enjoyed. We’re happy to showcase all steam operations
Them 42” gauge lokies are the best, love working with that kinda stuff.
He made backing into that hitch look so easy. That's experience at it's best!
Delightful, almost surreal. For a such a small locomotive, that must be one of the largest footplate and platform spaces ever. The tiny camouflaged turntable could be designed to confuse the enemy! Greetings, Bob K.
Glad you enjoyed
5:20 That has to be the tiniest turntable i've ever seen!
It's not everyday you get to see a steam engine on a turntable that's shorter than the engine.
@@DynamoProductions-trains Yeah, one wrong move by a single inch either forwards or backwards...
I was the fireman on this locomotive and have gotten the opportunity to drive on and off this turn table. It's hard to get the hang of first time but gets easier with practice. Being off is not a problem because the wheels line up perfectly with marks on the rails so the brakeman has to get the engineer to line it up before we unlock the turntable at all.
Since you’ve posted this! Definitely add more Canadian steam vids pls!
We're planning more Canadian steam operations in the future
I'm HIGHLY disappointed that "THE" quote wasn't spoken at around the 5:25 mark... :P
Well you don't get to hear it everyday
@@DynamoProductions-trains So true!
Wonderful video, big thumbs up :)
Thanks
Portage Flyer Saddletank locomotive number 2 and trains on the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway in Muskoka Ontario. He gotta like that Saddletank engine
Nice video
Thanks
Dynamo Productions You’re welcome
Nicely done
Thanks
I need one for my driveway. Backing the car out is a pain.
Tha is a Lovely Railway and engine, its very small, but beatiful, love it, also great footage, You Earned a Sub, Keep up the Good Work ;)
Glad you enjoyed
@@DynamoProductions-trains A lot actually, love your videos, good edition, and very high quality, nothing more to say, you are awesome ^^
Is this the same old loco that once sat near the road in the park back in the 1960s ? As I remember it was in pretty rough shape.
It’s a miracle that you don’t have to switch microphones during the filming process due to the noise levels. You’d think that recording a steam whistle at such close proximity would cause some sort of damage to it.
Are those link and pin couplers? 1:41
Yes they are
Ok, the smallest turntable on earth.. very impressive
Quaint.
It certainly is
Why didn't they convert the locomotive an passenger cars to have nuckels because I believe those are simular passenger cars to the ones at Disney World an they use nuckels
Because they're designed this way
Did they ever have any plans to extend the railroad
It doesn't seem likely, it's a turntable on each end and a tank engine has limited range.
How do you get a job as an engineer on a steam locomotive?
Generally you show up to a steam operation and work your way up to engineer
Is there any schooling that could help get that job?
Also thank you so much for replying
Becoming an engineer on a steam engine isn't something you go to school for. You find a place nearby that runs a steam engine and you work your way to learn how.
Hey this may interest you. I was the locomotive fireman here for three years including when this was filmed but am now busy with other things. We actually run an engineer for a day program that costs around $300. We do 4 runs a day. One run we show you how everything works. You get a train without coaches practice run and the last 3 run with passengers you get to drive with the engineer there to help at all times.
I am willing to bet this would NOT Open during winter as *the coaches are completely open air
*Therefore I Would design New coaches to facilitate winter operations
This train does operate once during the winter for a Christmas run. You’re right however it is very cold! 😅
