  • Johnny Marr joins Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch on stage at St. Luke's Church in London on 24 October 2003 as part of Bert's 60th birthday celebration, a BBC Special presentation.
Q: Did it surprise you that they were so into your music?
BJ: Well, I was surprised about Bernard. I think Bernard was surprised as well, actually. Because Johnny was the original fan. And then, Bernard was a fan of Johnny's. And through that whole sort of system, we ended up playing all three of us together, which was something like three generations. And for each, a guitar player in general - not those two - but any guitar player to play with me, it's not so much because of who I am or anything. It's because it's a challenge. Because I don't play regular music. I don't always stick to the bars or how many this, that or the next thing. Made quite a jump, you know. I think that's what Bernard's intrigued by it, how it fits together. And Johnny is still, he's unstoppable. He's like guitar mad.

My favourite acoustic player, backed up by my favourite electric player. Couldn't beat it.

Great sound. It does irk me when people are sniffy about Johnny Marr. Okay, his 'technique' is probably not the greatest, but he gets more feeling out of a guitar than plenty of technically superior guitarists. Renbourne is probably technically better than Jansch, but I know which I prefer. Music is about feeling and emotion, not technique. These guys understand that. Absolutely brilliant.

Johnny Marr is a legend. His sense of getting intensity without going into power chords or blues rockish cliche is second to none. Remember he wrote all of the Smiths catalogue between the ages of 19-23.

Yup, style counts for more than technique

And I don't get how anyone thinks Johnny Marr doesn't have a great technique :D he ain't punk rocker but actually a great guitarist.
Bert Jansch wouldn't've played with him otherwise.

Johnny Marr once said he decided to play the Rickenbacker guitar because it was a more limited sound, so it would make him try harder, that shows the integrity of the man & his respect for the guitar. Jansch what can you say, LEGEND..

Through learning, This Charming man at home on guitar. I discovered Johnny Marr respected Bert Jansch hugely.
I had never heard of him.
The tunes this man plays are so incredibly good and his skill is through the roof.
when they play together, it is some of the best I have ever seen!

Criticism of Johnny Marr! You have to pity these people.
Because they have revolutionised which Genre / decade?
Bitter, resentful, and it shows. There is not a world class musician / Guitarist who would not freely acknowledge his on going contribution to music.
Ergo... To Any and all of you...
Failure is a bitter pill to swallow 😂
The man is a legend of music... You unfortunately are nothing whatsoever. 🤣

Only heard recently that Janch was one of Johnnys influences, which makes total sense when you consider his beautifully crafted arpeggio guitar lines. So good that he got to play with him, this is a lovely rendition of a classic.

This is an amazing duet that I hate to criticize other than Bert's guitar is drowned out by Johnny Marr - I'd love to hear a version where Bert's guitar is leveled up
