Doobies doing a cover of Steely Dan is crazy cool.

Michael McDonald singing the bridge here at 2:57 takes me back nearly 50 years to Steely Dan's April 21, 1974 concert at the U. of Toledo. While waiting for the arena doors to open, my wife and I heard the band inside playing this song as their soundcheck. When they got to the bridge we heard a voice that we knew was no longer Donald Fagen's. Two hours later when they played it again to a live audience we could put Michael McDonald's face with that incredible voice we had heard earlier. The other enduring memory of "Pretzel Logic" was Donald Fagen leaving his piano during the long, bluesy outro and standing center stage, conducting the band like a symphony maestro. When Becker & Fagen ceased touring after July 1974, we followed guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and McDonald over to The Doobie Brothers to get our live music fix for the rest of that decade.

I'm glad they did this but not surprized because Michael played with Steely Dan and does this song with Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs as The Dukes of September...I hope they do it again and Michael sings more of it!!!😊❤

I used to get frustrated with the lineup changes but I was missing the point--these Brothers keep finding ways to win!

It's to bad that Tom couldn't be there but they marched on like the pros that they are. When I saw them the bass player sang most of the songs that Tom would have sung and did a fine job.

Where's Tom Johnston? He's not on stage here. A month after this show, he wasn't in the rained delayed show in Portsmouth VA on 7-3-23. My first thought is that I hope he's okay. I'm sorry that I didn't get to see him jam with his brothers, but, it was a good show. I was hoping to see him. In my opinion, he's the best voice they've ever had. However, Patrick Simmons showed me that he's truly the heart of this band. He proved that he can carry a show. It was a nice to see Bruce Hornsby drop in leading into the Pretzel Logic finale.
Tom, wherever you are, hope to see you soon.

Steely Dan opened for The Doobie Brothers on some of their west coast tour dates in 1973.

Pretty sure this request came from Mike McDonald - this was the song that got Mike recognised when he was a 21 year old in 1973 touring with Steely Dan that year. He sang a couple of songs including All Too Mobile Home and played second keys on the tours BUT it was this song that blew people away when Mike hit the bridge break "Well I stepped " etc. And it pretty much finished Donald Fagen touring and singing live. He said at the time "when Mike broke in and hit that bridge on Pretzel. I new my game was up". Mike was in the Doobie Brothers within months and the rest is hilarious as they say.
So yes, this is the song that broke Mike to a whole new audience.
Here is the original live from 1974. Much more of a raw early Dan rock tone and Mike clearly stands out taking the high parts. Go straight to 3.07 for his solo vocal, 21 years old, amazing: ua-cam.com/video/zapgcu8i3DA/v-deo.html

Love how Tom Johnson was just chillin mostly playing rhythm guitar and then sets things on fire with a lead guitar explosion. Then Pat and Tom playing together 🎶 Listen to the Music 🎶 😊
