  • In My Prepper Pantry Grocery Haul Meat and Protein, I'm continuing to work at putting together a three month prepper pantry as I prepare for the second wave so this grocery haul is meant to fill in the protein gaps. There may be tough times ahead so I’m engaging in emergency preparedness by putting up an emergency food supply. I’ve tried to choose carefully as I'm concerned about long term food storage, shelf stable items, food variety, and of course, nutritious value. This is prepping for beginners so join me as I share my prepping journey.       @@davidbown2707 On a daily basis, I feed two. How many do I prepare for? Four. I have two disabled sisters that I put aside things for them as well. My resources are just a little bit better than theirs.

    I recently found your channel and have enjoyed watching your videos. I grew up in the country and my parents had a large garden and had a cow and a pig killed every year. Summers were spent canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. I was brought up with foods being stocked up until the next summer when it started all over again. I'm 60 now and buy a few types of vegs to can or freeze from local farmers and I buy meat only when it's on sale or has been reduced. My grocery shopping is mainly items on sale that week. I have always kept a really stocked pantry and deep freezer. I can't understand why some people call it hoarding. I never thought of myself as hoarding. I just thought I was being prepared and frugal.

    When my husband and I have a meatless meal it is usually Potato pancakes or pierogis. My husband loves the ones made with farmers cheese but most people like them with mashed potato and cheddar cheese. We fry ours in butter with a little onion. I also have a spaghetti sauce recipe that is meatless. I used canned tomatoes from Italy and a large onion cut into four large pieces, a tablespoon of sugar, and a whole stick of butter. I simmer it on low for eight to ten hours (You can use a crock pot or on the stove) until the onions disappear. It is so good. serve over any pasta. I love garlic lots of it but this sauce doesn't need it it is good in a different way. I once had a man painting our house while I was making this sauce and he smelled it all day coming out the windows. He came off his ladder and demanded some of whatever I was cooking or he was not going to finish painting the house for any amount of money. The poor man was serious we had to give him some of our dinner. Also Breakfast for dinner is always a hit. I don't have time to make homemade pancakes for breakfast but they make a tasty and filling dinner with some bacon and I like a fried sunny side up egg on top of mine, hubby doesn't.

      I love your spaghetti sauce recipe. I am going to try it this week. I bought some gnocchi, first time, and it was delicious with a creamy spinach sauce but I can only imagine this with a red pasta sauce. That is too funny about the painter. Hahaha! He should have packed a lunch. I like breakfast for dinner too!

    Hello! We stock up on ground beef where I either scramble and brown it, then bag it in separate batches for tacos, spaghetti, beef pot pie, lasagna or make individual patties, flash freeze, then bag and take out for however many we plan to use. We also stock up on chicken breasts and leg quarters (the leg quarters make THE BEST stock) for Poppy Seed Chicken Casserole, Chicken and Dumplings, Chicken and Dressing. There’s also turkey wings for baking and turkey necks for boiling. Thanks for sharing! Blessed be!!

      Girl, you are on it. I don’t usually take the time to do all of that ahead of time but I can see where it can make a difference. Not only in how you store but even space in your freezer. I’d not thought to buy necks and wings for boiling but it makes perfect sense. You’d have “drippings’ to make dressing anytime if you season up the turkey while boiling. I’ll have to remember that.

    When you try the roast beef hash, make sure you brown it. It just tastes so much better when you brown it on both sides. I strongly suggest using a nonstick skillet, and don't add any fat.

    I’m a vegan for 15 years now and love veggie burger and tofu and some other meat substitute. I’m also a prepper too, I love your channel and enjoying watching all your videos even this one ahahahah ahahahah, you know it’s all about getting the things and food ones family enjoys.     We get our beef from a friend who keeps a herd of black angus cows(a terrific price!), and our fish from a family member for free. Pork and chicken I stock up at Costco when they have their $5 off a pack sale. Canned meat on the shelves, and home canned chili and beef stew put up for the winter.I’m stocked up and feeling set for the next 4 months at least- will need a turkey and ham for the upcoming holidays.

    I have Alpha gal, the Lone-star Tick Disease. So “nothing” from a mammal. I make sure I have ground chicken because to me it takes on seasonings and flavors better than ground turkey. I also keep tilapia, canned salmon, tuna, turkey bacon and turkey sausage on hand. When the first shut down came, I could not find meats for myself for months. I’ve since bought a new upright freezer and have started filling it with meats that are safe for me to eat 🙌.

      It, you did the right thing. Actually, so many people bought freezers after the shut down, to get one, you must go on a waiting list and it takes a couple of months to get it. Filling the freezer with what your family needs is smart. Don’t buy things you won’t eat. I’ve not tried ground chicken. I’ll look for that the Nest time I go shopping, I forgot about tilapia. My hubby likes that but I don’t eat fish other than tuna for tuna salad sandwiches or tuna noodle casserole. I also need more canned salmon. I will eat a salmon paddie if needed.

    One can of chunky soup with meat and veggies over rice makes a meal for us.
    I can meats (chicken breast, pork, ground beef, beef roast, sausage and bacon) but I buy the one pound cans of ham for 2.99.
    Buy all my meats on sale only and then can it.
    Lots of dry beans in my extended pantry. Organization is essential especially if you have to store in various places in your house (under beds, closets etc).

      Frankie Odom I’m working on getting in more dry beans. I don’t have enough. I wish I knew how to can meats, I can only do water bath canning. I’ll have to figure this out,

      This and That with Denise Jordan Denise, I knew nothing about canning but I watched a lot of canning videos on you tube. I am 70 and only been canning about 4 years. I actually almost feel addicted to canning. It just feels so good to see all those jars of meats, potatoes and other vegetables on my shelves. Don’t have to worry about losing electricity during hurricane season.

      I added a can of instant rice to a can of condensed vegetable soup with a little less than a can of water and cook it that way. It makes a Spanish rice kind of dish and sometimes I added a little ketchup. I lived on this in college and when I started teaching.

      @@homemakingwithdenise hi! I have been canning leftover catering from my workplace and have about two months of meat canned up. I dont have a fridge or freezer. Ive put up a years worth of rice and have chickens rabbits and a big garden for greens. I live in germany, so the stores and prices are realy different here, but im sure the hike in price will hit us soon too. For now, i buy a quarter of a steer from my neighbor per year and the rest from the butcher. I love seeing how other people build a larder though!

      Hi, Denise. I am proud to say, my husband and I have been diligently prepping for years. We live in rural Nebraska, and know from experience that weather isn’t always our friend. Power outages, heavy snowfall and ice are common. So we are proud to say we are always ready.

    Please when shopping for metal shelving to store your prepper canned foods, water etc, please make sure you buy one's stronger than what you estimate you'll need. I strongly recommend th metal shelves, and I make sure to get the covers for them. That way anyone in my home isn't seeing everything I've got stored away for hard times. One more thing about metal shelving units, look at the weight capacity per shelf, and overall. My personal favorite holds up to 4800 pounds. That's a whole lot of canned foods, and dry staples.

    Ms. Denise, you are not dreaming. The prices are going up! I noticed it back in April. I had been eating chicken and shrimp, and wanted some beef. I was shocked! Then my mom said her local market in her small town was selling those soups for 2.50 per can! I use nuts. When they go on sale like after the holidays, or right before, I stock up on those. Cashews are good in place of chicken. For example your standard chicken and rice dish can have cashews instead . Peanuts are good in soup. Sunflower seeds on a garden salad. Great ways to up the protein or just eat vegan. The high fat is very satisfying and better for you.

    I went and did a meat stock up today and I ended up with about 50 pounds of meat $121 10 pounds of the meat was bacon for $25 the rest of the meat was 10 pounds of hamburger and then there was country style ribs, racks of ribs, sausage, chicken and steak. It was nice to replenish my meat freezer. That keystone meat also comes in beef, pork and chicken as well. I have been slowly preparing a little each month for the last 8 months I have kids home full time for home schooling so there is a lot of eating going on in my house. Along with the frozen meats I am also putting away canned chicken, spam, canned beef canned ham, chili, beans also walmart has a great value corned beef hash for $1.66 and it is very good I have been picking it up they have it in smaller cans or larger cans with my bunch I cook a large can and then add 6 eggs and some veggies and it makes a great breakfast for 5 big eaters. These are some of the things I am putting away.

    Hi Denise - I've been enjoying your videos especially about your prepper pantry. Prepping is something I've been interested in for years. As I am stuck at home in quarantine with Covid 19 right now, I've been researching tons of videos on UA-cam. One are I'm seeing an absolute lack of is any video that might pertain to prepping and food security for a single person! In all videos, they are geared toward reading large families or at least a 2 person household. Please consider giving some thought to a video geared toward the single person - meal ideas, food storage, anything where you don't have to store 20 extra servings. I have been single for a long time so I know a lot of things that work for me but I'm sure you have viewers who could benefit from ideas like this! Thanks for all your great ideas!

    I .buy meat when it is on sale. Some I freeze, but I also can chicken, roast and ground beef, as well as chili, beef stew, etc. A suggestion when you vacuum seal the meat. If you take it out of the packaging it will seal better. There is ait within the package, so the meat can still get freezer burn. If you want to keep it in the packaging, cut a small hole in the wrapper. That will take all of the air out. I have stocked up on canned tuna, sardines, salmon, soups, corned beef hash and hot tamales. I tried to get am assortment that I could try and will buy more of the ones I like. You have a great assortment. I was glad to see those ham hocks! I use them to flavor my butter beans .A dish of those with cornbread is one of my comfort meals!

    Just used a qt baggie of pulled pork, basic seasonings, from my deep freeze last night. It's now 1/2 BBQ; 1/2 lime/cilantro/garlic, & 1 powdered lime packet- was enough for rice, & black beans too.

      @@homemakingwithdenise Hello I became a prepper July 22 of this year. There are 3 of us my daughter 19 lives at home. My family does not support me in this journey. They say I buy to much food, nothing is going to happen, my husband says stay out of 5he store. Yet any meal they think they want I can cook it with out good to the store. How can I get them to join me in prepping?

    Denise, I have stocked up on dried meats like pepperoni, salami, sausage- all great on pizza or with pasta dishes. If my electric goes out - I won’t have to eat those right away. They can pretty much be on a shelf while I cook up my defrosting meat. I also stock up on bacon - easy to store and offers us variety. Keilbasa and good hot dogs are in my freezer for variety- again if the freezer goes out they buy me a little time so we can cook and eat the foods that are going to be bad first. Stocking up for a 3 month meat supply with two refrigerator freezers for a family of 5 isn’t easy. I just got a vacuum sealer too.

      I’m loving my vacuum sealer. We just cleaned out our deep freezer and at the very bottom, buried under fish, were chops and a few other freezer burned items I had to throw out. We bought another small freezer so all the fish and ice block things can go in one freezer and I can keep track of what’s in the other one.

    My friend Tina recommended your channel, and I am delighted. We are both long time pantry people- we both do it to contain costs. Shop the pantry- which you fill on sales and case-lot specials with things you always buy! And we’ve always viewed the freezer as an extension of the dry & canned goods.
    My protein stash list: Canned Tuna, salmon and sardines. Canned veggies. Frozen ground pork & beef, chicken thighs, pork and beef stir fry sliced meat, roast beef, whole chicken, salmon pattie and salmon fillets. White fish fillets. Pork ribs and johnsonville Brats & mild Italiansausages.

      My husband is enjoying shop the pantry. It just makes life so much easier and it’s cost effective. I’m trying to decide if I want a Costco membership. I thanked Tina for sending you over. Looks like we keep similar things in our freezers.

    We have a family with various dietary needs (Type 1 Diabetes, Gluten Free, Vegan, Keto) and RedBeans and Rice works great for our big family meals! One pot of beans with sausage, one without. Rice and riced cauliflower. Lovely side salad. Traditional Mom’s cornbread and one made Vegan/Gluten Free. Nobody leaves hungry and everyone feels included. 😊❤️ And most importantly, healthy.

      I think I’m good on meat for the next four months but like you, Ill need a turkey and ham for the holidays. I looked for turkey but the guy said they won’t get any in until closer to Thanksgiving. I’ve got to learn how to pressure can so I can do meat options. We’re good on fish. I’m married to the big fisherman of the Midwest. Our freezer is well stocked. I should do a video on how he prepares it for freezing. Hmmmm. Ideas. Ideas.

    I'm not vegan, but I think quinoa is a high protein food. I stock up on chicken, ground beef, pork and roasts. Mostly what my hubby and kids will eat. Love watching your channel! So much great information.

      This and That with Denise Jordan prepping for the winter months that is what I do every year I love any tip I can get especially this time of the year sometimes our roads are blocked and it’s hard to get to stores so a well stocked working pantry is the way to go and I never heard of the four corner pantry as the saying goes “you learn something new everyday “

    ❤me some sardines! We make them in deviled eggs with onion & mayo. My favorite vegetarian meal to make for the kids is pasta, Alfredo sauce & I throw in whatever frozen veggies I have in the freezer like Broccoli, carrots, corn & tomatoes & basil.

      I’m pretty sure I got that Keystone at Target, but I could be misremembering. If you don’t see it there, definitely Walmart and Aldi. And yes, isn’t Mary amazing?

      @@homemakingwithdenise they all carry a lot of different things right now. It's just finding where. Yes Target did say they carry keystone when i googled it. They didn't have any, i found mines at Walmart. I have to go to different Walmarts to find different kinds.

    Make sure you have a pressure canner to be able to can your ground meat and chicken in case your electric goes out. That includes having a way to cook it when you have no power.

    Meatless: morning star sausage patties are really good for breakfast. We heat them in a skillet and then pour a little maple syrup on them until it gets a little sticky (not so thin). They are amazing, my daughter has me hooked on them.

    I found over the years practicing food storage (I live in a hurricane area), that having foods that have the best nutrition with the least additives becomes important. With regular use of many of these foods, what you may eat once or twice a week becomes daily and perhaps not as healthy as you would like under normal circumstances. So I became interested in dehydrating fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. I also started canning my own soups, meats such as chicken, turkey, and ground beef. They are mostly ready to eat and I know what goes in the jars. So I suggest for those homemakers interested in preparing yearly for savings, to eat healthy, and have the convenience of not having to run to the store so often, to invest in canning and dehydrating supplies along with a great vacuum sealer!

      I want to learn to can meats and soups. I can do water bath canning but not pressure canning with meats. I’m going to learn this winter, I just bought a food dehydrator but alive got to learn how to use it,

      This and That with Denise Jordan I agree! I just started my prepper pantry and I am allowing $10 to $30 a week depending on my budget. I love your channel and I am soooo glad I came across it.       I have never really thought to check Target for canned meats. I have not been able to get canned meat ( other then chicken and tuna ) in my area in months. I live in NorthWest Alabama and we still don't have full shelves. Somethings are still hard if not impossible to find.

    I have found that cooked meat is smaller in my chest freezer. And I 'form' it flat, and freeze it flat, so it fits better.
    We buy the family pack of meat, and cook and meal pkg it b4 freezing.
    Whole canned chicken- have not heard good things.
    Beef stew, serve on top of egg noodles.
    Have you tried lime&cilantro as a meal flavor? (Vigo makes a rice packet) pork chops, black beand and rice. We really like the flavor.

    Tfs Denise. I have been working on my pepper pantry, which are my kitchen cabinet ☺. I don't by a lot of meats except skinless chicken breast and ground Chuck. When I get it together I may do a video. Tfs and I'm enjoying these videos.

    Loving your video and tips, it helps a lot to plan, we have had weeks at a time with bad weather in the winter. Meat is so expensive I've been trying to find alternatives we eat a lot of eggs.

    I made meatballs. Fried them up, froze them on cookie sheets, then put in freezer bag in freezer. This way if freezer goes out, they are already cooked and hopefully I can put those in refrig? Or we can take out a few or a lot a bit at a time to put in sauce or just to slice ( like a mini meatloaf) for sandwiches. Made beef barley veg soup very concentrated so takes up less room in freezer. When it's time to eat the soup I just add water to the condensed soup. Praying freezer doesn't go out as they are difficult to find now since they were made in China.

    Denise, great stuff here! I just recently discovered your channel and I am loving it. Regarding plant-based proteins: I just recently found one myself (I'm a meat eater)... Tofu... it became a great option as stores have jacked up meat prices/have meat insecurity. Why is it super? It freezes beautifully- cut into the pieces you wish to use and flash frozen on a tray first! Looks a little odd in its frozen state but comes right back to normal when defrosted. I toss in a half cup for any broth-based soup I'm making these days for some added protein. Hope this helps, and keep up the great content

    Cuban pork roast.
    [Boston butt, cut into fist sized chunks, marinate overnight] in:
    Mojo Criollo (Spanish foods section), Italian salad dressing, orange juice; Old Bay, minced garlic, onion powder, rosemary, salt, pepper.
    The fluid, need enough to cover your meat. So eyeball it. Figure 80% Mojo, 20% other. Mix the Ital.dressing and o.j., taste to be sweet zesty, can add lime juice if like it tart. The dry, figure it by ## of meat and what you normally use.
    So its next day. Sear all the chunks, drop it right back in the marinade with raw meat. Wait for it, I am not insane.
    When done with all searing I use a pressure cooker for quick, or a slow cooker. And all that marinade gets cooked.
    It is now pulled pork in a savory juice. Black beans, I use canned, adding a couple ladles of that juice. Can do the same if making from dry. Make your rice.
    This makes meals that freeze really well, especially the pork. Also great for a potluck as can be mixed into 1 big dish, extra juices on side.
    Serve with salad, bresd&butter.

    Hi Denise, Everytime I go to Aldi's I get a bag of their frozen chicken breasts and their cattlemen's ranch burgers. I also get cubed steak from meijers and Kroger. A friend of mine makes a spread from Vienna sausages for her grandkids, she mashes the sausages adds Mayo fresh dill and dill relish. Still tastes horrible to me. Lol. Stay safe

    I prefer the roast beef hash, but I can’t find it often. But yes, meat prices are ridiculous, but I’m about to stock up anyway. Need to clean my deep freezer out.

    My 3-6 month pantry includes vacuum sealed dried beans (and rice), tuna and chicken. I'm mostly plant based so what I have will last me a long time. In my freezer I have Beyond Burgers and Gardein "chicken" nuggets.

      I think we are going to move towards a more plant based diet, I’m going to start with a meatless Monday option and see how it goes over, we will see, if you hear screaming at your house, you’ll know the hubby has lost his mind. Hahaha! He usually eats whatever I cook going meatless once a week, weeeeelllllllllll, we will see.

    Hi sis..yes it is me again..i love how you are preparing..I don’t have a small freezer, and there is none to buy! I have a bottom freezer connected to my fridge. It is full and can’t fit anything else..any suggestion where to put extra meat.

    I don't buy much meat for the freezer. I do buy to home can. Bags of chicken hind quarters cooked, diced and canned are the basis for many varied meals. I also have home canned chicken breast, turkey, turkey breast, pork, pork loin, ground beef and beef chunks. Each pint with the addition of noodles, pasta, rice etc. can make several meals. I'm down to my last two jars of beef chunks and will not be buying more to can at current prices.

    Some great meatless options: Gardein meatless crumbles work great with spaghetti sauce, with dirty rice mix, for taco nights, in soups. Many people can’t tell the difference! Baked tofu is delicious in salads, stirfrys, on pizza, on its own or can bake in crumbles and add to sauces with pastas, etc. Blackeyed peas and rice (Hoppin John) is delicious with a side salad or veggie. Chao dairy free cheese makes great grilled cheese and you can find it at Walmart and Kroger now. Once you start to look, there are so many more meatless options than there were even 5 years ago in “regular” grocery store. Great for not only vegan/vegetarians but also for people trying to lower their cholesterol or just wanting to try new recipes and explore new delicious flavors!     These videos are so helpful. Thank you. For me chicken breast, ground meat and canned chicken are must haves. I also like having some cans of lentil soup in my pantry. I add some extra pasta and top with Parmesan cheese. If possible, could you please share best ways to freeze meats and the lengths of time they can be frozen. Thank you!

    We are not vegetarian but I am trying to cut down on meat for financial and health reasons. I love to use the Morningstar crumbles for things like pasta and Mexican dishes.
    Could you please go over your inventory system?

      Deborah Reuteler Oh...sure. I can do another inventory and show how I do it. I’ve used the Morningstar crumbles , maybe twice, and cooked with tofu several times. It does work out nicely.

      @@homemakingwithdenise I actually haven't tried them yet but i have seen videos of people taste testing them and saying they're good so I am hoping for the best...the ingredients are simple just the meat and salt so I figure it'll be good. I don't have a lot of freezer space so I must keep canned items. I am also buying some sauces such as bbque for these meats as well as extra spices to season them with like I would normally cook... I have bought the ground beef, beef, chicken and pork. I could make a pulled pork sandwich, spaghetti with meat sauce, tacos, add to soups, etc...
      I figure it'll be a nice change from rice and beans at least!

      @@homemakingwithdenise I love tuna and salmon salad. I also make tuna and salmon patties. With tuna I also make tuna noodle casserole or tuna potato and pea casserole. In the casseroles I used creamed soup.

      @@homemakingwithdenise It's really an easy recipe. I just slice potatoes and onions on a mandolin so they're nice and thin. I grease a baking dish with some butter. I usually use condensed cream of celery soup, mixed with about a half a can of milk. It just depends on how much I'm making. Then I layer the potatoes, soup, onions, soup, tuna, frozen peas, potatoes and start over. Of course salt and pepper. Sometimes I even use a little celery salt.
      I bake it in the oven until the potatoes are tender. 350 degrees for about 40 minutes (I think) LOL it's been a while since I've made this :) This is one of those OLD recipes my Mom used to make, with no recipe.

    I would rather buy more canned meat, all of them, instead of fresh meat! If the power goes out for a week or month or however long, you have cooked meats instead of all that lost frozen fresh meats! Some of that fresh meats you can dehydrate and keep it in bags! I’m just thinking of a possible outage nation-wide!

      Well, I'm not thinking of a nationwide power outage. typically, we get power outages related to storms and such which only affects certain grids. However, I am using up more of the fresh and frozen.
