Why do you torch the inside and outside of the hive boxes?

Hi there! I am very interested in these. Does someone know why the external side of the boards is grey? Did the wood undergo some treatment? Thanks in advance for any piece of information!

will this work with the American honey bee

      Yeah.
The main reason for this construction seems to be thick walls for insulation against the colder winters in the mountains. The smaller hive diameter also means the bees have less space to heat up and can pack themselves in tighter against the comb that is much closer together than in a Langstroth hive. So the bees are more resistant to cold, rain, wind, and invasion of pests.
For American honeybees, which are generally more populous than Japanese honeybees, you might have trouble with them absconding due to lack of space.
Otherwise is far less ideal than your "usual" Langstroth hive for general productivity in ideal climate

I will make one for the "American" honeybee. Maybe just a little bigger. Our bees still prefer trees just like any other
