I used to fish the River Ouse in Sussex some 45 odd years ago. One night, I was fishing with a couple mates. _Now to set the scene to this story._ Where we fished, the road was upstream and some 200 yards to our right. To our left, the river divided into two with one way, the far one, going to a weir and the other, our side, to a sluice gate with a drop off on the other side of about six foot. A further 100 yards after the sluice, if that, was a small but significant stream which you'd need to see what to do, to jump across to carry on downstream with a high hedge on it's opposite bank. And if you went along the river, the next bridge was some 2 to 2 1/2 miles downstream. *Now for the story.* Just before midnight, one of my mates said, _"Someone's coming."_ We all looked to our right and on the path that was a couple foot higher than we were, was a hooded, caped person. Small in stature so we assumed they were female. She had no torch or anything. Just walking along. _Though as I recall, I can't remember her legs. Just a hooded person with a long cape. As she walked behind us, we were asking _"Is OK? Do you need any help."_ Just trying to be helpful. But she didn't stop. Just kept walking towards where the sluice was. We then chatted for about 30 seconds wondering who and more importantly, why they were walking along the riverbank at night without a torch. So my two mates, with torches in hand and on, decided to jog along and catch her up. So off they went. Some 15 to 20 minutes later, they returned. They saw no one. Nothing. They had searched the fields below us after they had reached the aforementioned stream. Just incase she had gone into the fields. They had even jogged to a small pond that was in a field just incase she had managed to walk in that direction. I recall seeing their torchlights flashing as they had searched. *So...* Did we see a ghost? I'm still not sure. But if it wasn't, then who was she and where did she go? 🤔🤷♂ My two mates jogged after her so they'd have caught up before she'd even gotten to the sluice. _However, and is something none of us knew beforehand._ That Monday at darts, we were recalling that night to one of our darts team and he said, _"You know that big old house that's way across the fields and about 1/2 mile away from the main road? That used to be a convent!"_ EDIT - Great story. 👍
I used to fish there almost 40 years ago. It was slightly smaller at 1 1/2 acres and reed lined at the shallow end. All the carp were 10lb+ as apart from a little 8lb common, the best was a 29 I think. It was really tough, blank days and weeks were the norm. It was owned by Fourways Fisheries as I recall. Im not sure how many tickets they sold, but it was often really packed, too many for such a small lake, but a bit quieter in the week days. When it got dark, boy was it dark, being tree lined and no lights anywhere. It definitely had a real "lost in time" atmosphere like nowhere else I fished before or since...
Class watch! I’m itching to get the rods out but have to sit on my hands this weekend 😂 such a beautiful venue & the fish look even better! I’d love to add one or two to my album for sure. Top angling Simon, awesome fish!
Definitely going to try, already looked on the website & their gallery. The Little Lin and Lego would be my targets for the album but they all looked stunning!
@@petra2885 If nobody has ever actually been to the old copper mine, they really cannot get a sense of just how the atmosphere is creepy during daylight hours, after dark it becomes a whole other level of dark and eerie. As if the woods become alive with spirits and the ghosts who wonder that woodland. No other place I have been comes close to that place. It is a whole other level of creepy. It will test anyone's resolve staying overnight at the old flooded copper mine. What a place. This lake looks like a picnic site in comparison.
Yes! What an atmosphere. I didn't fish it, but travelled a long way to see it after reading that great chapter in Chris's book....was it 'the old copper mine'?
I used to fish a small lake, more of a pond really, in a hollow in the hills. The only access was through woodland, so there was no quick escape route. In all the times I fished it I only ever saw one other angler, and him only on two occasions. It was the quietest place I ever fished, too, you could hear a twig break on the opposite side. It was a genuinely unnerving experience being there, but it had decent carp and some huge roach. I once took relatives for a walk round it, and without me saying anything they all wanted to leave immediately. I subsequently found out it had a reputation for being haunted, which didn't surprise me in the least!
Fished here with my dad in the late seventies it is well spooky dad used to take me there before school lol he got dementia know I still take him carping.
I think the guy who told the story about the lake in Oswestry was relaying Robs story and didn't realise he was telling it to the person that started the story.
never seen any ghosts while fishing but i did have sleep paralysis whilst fishing in a peg that an old boy had died in years before, he was an old tench angler that hated carp anglers. i woke up in the early hours and could not move, i was sweating and the air was thick and had a sickly feeling to it but nothing was there, it lasted probs no longer than 30 seconds but that was enough for me, i packed up in the dark and left, i never fished that side of the lake again. f that.
Bang a night vision camera on ,at night you might catch something,I'm a carp angler paranormal researcher investigator there's plenty over the years I've seen in the day and night.
Oh wow two of my favourite things! The paranormal and fishing! Right up my street! And a stunning old English estate lake to boot! I'd much rather see an apportion of a boy than some bloke screaming at me haha now I just need to find 5 other anglers to tolerate me for a few days 👻👻👻
Spooky 👻 but lovely looking lake. Great editing 😅 Im in my bivy and it's raining in Germany 🌧 full moon and all. Had to turn my volume up to max to hear it. So yeah at 10:13 you did get me 😅 Great one mate 😄👌
@SimonCrow 3 nights in only 2 small ones of around 8 kg. Still 7 nights to go and it's lovely anyways specially this time of the year🍂 being on the bank . So 🤞for a 🐳
Very intensive atmosphere🎥 Good story. Top angling 👍 I have noticed Avid landing net, it looks rock solid when netting. Is this breach landing net, or you are testing some prototype landing net? Looking forward for next upload👍
Trouble with these waters only available for the select few , lots of waters I fished when I was a young man I cannot fish because of the extortionate prices 🤬syndicated just like your lake 🤡
Good old hook lake. It still holds a place close to my heart. The first syndicate I ever joined. Must be nearly 25 years since I've walked it's banks.
Still a lovely place mate
