Probably everyone everywhere has already commented on this, but it was such a heartwarming moment when in DB Super Goku silently replayed this fight while waiting for Frieza. True respect in and out of universe for Grandpa Gohan.
“That’s impossible! The only one who knows that technique is Goku! And Gohan… Annnd Master Roshi… And Krillin… And Yamcha. And me, that one time I tried it just to see if I could-“
Look, even in a world with the dragon balls, it's hard to believe that your grandpa just showed up outta nowhere! It's one thing if YOU went and wished for him to come back, but without you doing anything?? That's why they had a hard time figuring it out. Also, you might not remember this, but Baba was also the one who brought Goku back from the dead in DBZ during the Buu arc.
I'm not sure why you feel like Roshi should recognize Gohan based on appearance. He's wearing a full face mask. Yes, we've seen him in that outfit in flashbacks, but that doesn't mean Roshi would think "only Gohan would wear those very ordinary clothes"
Fortuneteller Baba has the ability to bring a dead person to earth for a day. That is how she brings back Grandpa Gohan, and how she brings back Goku at the start of the Buu Saga.
There are a few episodes in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, where when Goku is shadow fighting, he is actually recreating this fight from memory. I've seen a few videos, where they are played side by side. It shows how important this fight was to Goku.
I still remember when I first saw this as a kid, I had a suspicion but was still absolutely surprised. Mostly because I didn’t know about how Baba could bring people back from the dead for a day because the Buu saga hadn’t aired yet, because it was still being dubbed.
I feel like its worth mentioning that this was from a different era of anime. Yes, there is a lot of wasted time, like the stare off...but it was how they portrayed intensity back then. DB, and DBZ especially, definitely exaggerated it...but I personally like that they didn't always rush the action. It builds anticipation!
This is a fantastic fight! It must have been a great twist for the audience when they first watched back in the 80's. This mysterious fighter grabs Goku's tail, a weakness only those close to Goku know about. Folks must have been stunned back then!
I remember that I was stunned. Up to this point in the series we never had seen a dead person in soul form before so to find out that it was Gohan was such a nice treat. It also leads to one of my favorite scenes in all of DB which is goku’s reaction to gohan-something we never really see from goku again.
It's been a lot of episodes so far, but we gotta remember that it's only been about a year since anyone knew of the Dragon Balls' existence, let alone what they did. At this point in the story, assuming someone used the Dragon Balls to do something otherwise inexplicable would be far from anyone's first guess.
I absolutely love the call back scene we saw in Dragon Ball Super. Shortly before the tournament of power started, Goku has to stop by Baba’s palace to pick up Frieza for the TOP. (Because Baba let Frieza come back for 1 day like she did here with Grandpa Gohan and then Goku in the Buu Saga) As Goku waiting outside for Baba and Frieza to come out, he’s stand in the exact ring he’s fighting Grandpa Gohan in right now… then you Goku reliving their fight and doing move for move that he did back in this episode. It’s one of my favorite scenes from the entirety of Super.
The fifty years to learn came from Gohan I believe. Roshi only had 2 Students before the modern ones, Gohan was the only one to use it besides Roshi till Goku... then Yamcha... and so on Meaning unfortunately for Grandpa Gohan he is weaker than Yamcha.
I think in raw power Goku has been stronger than Roshi since the first martial arts tournament except when Roshi does a full-power kamehameha. But he was way behind in skill back then. With the training with Korin, he's caught up in skill somewhat, being able to read opponents and anticipate actions, but he's not at a master level in skill.
if you remember in the buu saga of dbz, Goku comes back for a day thanks to Baba bring back someone who died for a day is one of the magic powers of Baba
this is sick. i just found you off your dbza reactions and i was LITERALLY thinking about rewatching og dragon ball, too. i love this episode as well, it really hits my heart 🥺 i hope you enjoy the rest of the series bc i love it separate from the other db stuff, and the japanese dub is sooo charming so you should watch that on your own time if you want. ok bye
Goku might be stronger than roshi in terms of raw physical strength. However Roshi has experience, technique, and skills on his side. And Goku isn’t incredibly stronger than Roshi. Roshi is still very strong. Id say the reason hes not as physically strong is his age which might contribute to the slight gap in their physical strength.
Melon seems to have a hard time grasping cartoonisms. A simple mask or wig = completely different person. Voice? Body? Fighting style? None of that matters. MASK HIDES ALL. Also goku is just plain stupid. Don't forget in Super he is easily tricked by Beerus wearing a giant dome mask
Hi Melon I think you missed what going on Grandpa Gohan don't want revenge he to kindhearted for that he came back to so he could luring a lesson and even if it for Goku acdntlly Kill him I am 100 percent sure Gohan wouldn't hold it against him he loves Goku that way he left the 4 star Dragon ball for him to look after

Episode 94 if anyone wants to find a clip.

also roshi is 300 years old. it is difficult to recollect many things
@marcintosh4040 plus gohan is a old man. It's possible roshi hasn't seen him in years
And Gohan has a halo, last time Roshi saw him he didn’t have one also Roshi knew Gohan was dead

Vegeta too
Frieza as well @@fernandobanda5734

Do you have a link to those videos?
Both Gohan and Goku's Kamehamehas are notably wilder than Roshi's here. This is a pretty good fight. Both of them went hard.
I still remember when I first saw this as a kid, I had a suspicion but was still absolutely surprised. Mostly because I didn’t know about how Baba could bring people back from the dead for a day because the Buu saga hadn’t aired yet, because it was still being dubbed.

When I first saw this, I thought Goku was going to rip his own tail off in over to overcome his weakness and fulfill his promise to Upa.
Yea I could see that happening too
I love this fight and Grandpa Gohan would reveal himself the next episode

I’ve been liking every video for a while now. I hope the rest of the series won’t end up being patreon exclusive.

Grandpa Gohan knows how to pad the run time.

Me and my friend were also making hella jokes about Grandpa Gohan wanting revenge against Goku for killing him in this fight lmao
I really want you to finish this series . I love your reactions. It makes me think of my first time watching dragonball
if you remember in the buu saga of dbz, Goku comes back for a day thanks to Baba
bring back someone who died for a day is one of the magic powers of Baba
Melon: it's understandable for Goku to not recognize Gohan, cuz he is distracted by the fight.
Me: Also he real dumb
