My hypothesis is that young creative talent is blocked from the usual TV/Film because they haven't got deep pockets to do internships. So they are streaming on Twitch, doing video essays on UA-cam, or making comedy skits on Instagram or TikTok.

Rees-Mogg opening the fete and clearing off in short order is exactly how be behaves in the village he lives in. He once made a point of saying that he goes to the local pub - which he did exactly once according to the landlord.

The reason why Hollywood is creatively bankrupt is because studios bought tons of IPs and now they're sitting on them trying to keep the rights. This requires them to produce remake after remake, sequel after sequel, because otherwise they lose the right to the IP. So it's a vicious cycle of an overproduction of the same old content because 1) studios can own the full rights to an IP and 2) studios can lose the full rights to an IP. To break the vicious cycle, either part 1) or part 2) of this process needs to end. I have no idea which solution is better, but something has to change.

I'm doing a year of reading books from the 1800's and it has been FANTASTIC. But you have to get used to complex characters you might not like, were not used to that - they are either good or bad today but in 1850 they could cope with complexity.

Unfortunately most adults don't realize that. It's annoying how grown people now consume this stuff. When I was growing up there were, like, three children's movies and the rest was regular adult stuff, sophisticated, or not, but adult. Now everything is a kids movie. So glad you spilled the proverbial beans. The entertainment industry is bankrupt because it relies on proven certified successful synopsis (ie Marvel comics, Celebrated authors Jane Austen, long running TV series) but not or seldom on new storylines. Harry Potter - new - led to countless copycat wizardly movies. etc
IMHO, we should get new shows with new plots. Not the umpteenth version of Henry Tudor six wives. BBC Ghosts was lovely deserving fully its 5th seasons. Not sure its American franchise deserves same as it brings nothing more. As an old (older than my own date of birth) French movie director used to say: to make a successful movie you need 3 things. First a good idea. Then a good idea to finally have a good idea. Creation implies inventing a universe. If your universe is set in history, you need to sail as close to real history as you can. Which is why for example Paris Police 1900&1905 along the 4 seasons of Vienna Blood are pretty good. Creation implies also accepting the sewers of it. The imperfections. Warts and all. Not sure Hollywood understands accepting warts is a guaranty of success.

Between those and reality TV there is no reason to watch network TV or any TV for that matter. One franchise left out was the Transformers. Yea, I'm tired of them as well as all the superhero crap. UA-cam is pretty much all my entertainment at the moment.

Alexei Sayle's Stuff in 1989 had a skit about the glut of holiday programs at the time filming on the same beach in Alicante practically on top of each other ending up in a fight.

There’s an American series that has ended for good called Evil, and it’s a great watch with original stories. But even though it’s regularly high in the charts it’s been dropped through lack of money. Absolutely crazy! I hope another company picks it up.

He's right about the film industry and sequels, spin off TV series and audio books voiced by Stephen Fry.

Life was much better in the year 1985. I was basically a baby at that point, I was just 35 years old

Life imitating art: In Thick Of It had a 'resigned' Malcolm Tucker being pitched a reality TV series, that character promptly walked out of the meeting because even a thorough going arsehole like Tucker recognised that it was beneath him.
    Rees-Mogg... "Where do I sign?"

This subject might make a good sequel sketch to the Monty Python sketch about the gentlemen sitting in chairs 1-up'ing each other in a Lancashire accent on how hard of a life they had coming up. "D-list celebs fighting and f*cking each other on an exploding island ?!! You were lucky!"

Star Wars was 45 years ago! They are still pumping out trash based on that "IP." If that had been the situation when I was growing up during the 1960s, we'd have been watching the 12th iteration of The Birth of A Nation instead of 2001 A Space Odyssey.

I rewatched the old Guy Richie movie "Revolver" last night. It has gotten much better over the years. It was "too much" when it came out, but now it's spot on right. Check it out folks!

May I add film biographies to the list?
That's another avenue when you have no ideas.

The simple act of reading through unsolicited scripts and ideas has probably become too much of an outrageous concept.

I'd watch "The Lobster 2" or "Melancholia, the Aftermath" or "Mother!, the Flood".
