  • Yes. Dry fly fishermen have a long, well-earned reputation of being insufferable snobs. My old man is a lifetime fly fisherman. Now 85, he gets a pass for any pretentious behavior as far as I'm concerned.

Just went on a float trip on the Grey Reef. Caught lots of decent sized fish on wet flies. Great trip. Watching a trout sip your dry fly is 100% better.

I started out dry fly fishing only, years later on a guided trip a guide introduced me to wet fly fishing because nothing was happening on a dry. The results was the largest brown I have ever caught 27 inch on a Carey special size 8 , now I use both, just depends on the time of year and my instincts.

Totally nailed it, in that the absolute whole reason I wanted to be a fly fisherman, was to catch a trout on a dry fly. 35 years later it has not changed, and only become stronger, and we have the Bow River up here in Alberta to fish all winter, but it's never very appealing to go out and drag the bottom. I'd rather tend the fire and drink coffee and Irish cream.

Well said. Dad could go all day without a tug. We're just out enjoying the art of fishing, not to collect fish stories.

The dry fly snobbery, is mostly like our catch and release snobbery. Fly fishing can't exist on public waters with catch and kill, almost anywhere. But in the UK, on private waters, many were catch and kill, you were not allowed to release fish. So if a club wanted to maintain a population of real fish they had to make it difficult to catch them, so they imposed tackle restrictions. Catching fish on dry flies, in the early days was challenging. We may need to move in that direction someday, catch and release with people harassing fish with 30 fish Perdigon days is not sustainable.
Dry fly fishing can be sophisticated, but it can also be pretty dumbed down. A dry fly attractor fly that is unsinkable is not a master's turn to fish. Nymph fishing can be as sophisticated as dry fly fishing, except the drag issues are 3 not 2 dimensional.
The true snobbery arose from actual class distinctions, probably mostly in the UK, where water is private property, and the great locations were privately owned. Hard to get a beat on a Salmon river owned by the Monarch. In America, though now we have to fight for it, water is normally publicly accessible. The great fly fishers are just regular people. And even the ones who might be associated with upper class pretensions like Schwiebert, were perfectly pleasant and helpful people to meet at shows.

Each to their own, which I think was the point. Happy fishing!

You want to raise eyebrows with these boys, show up with your Cabela's hat and waders and talk up how great walleye fishing is....

Most of the really great dryfly trout guys I know are also excellent walleye and smallmouth fishermen. When there are no hatches, and the streamer bite is slow. most of these guys go out with other gear and catch the hell out of the other fish we have available here. So if you start talking walleyes in your Cabela's cap, you'll probably get more attention than sneers of derision. They'll probably just sneer at your hat. They'll be wearing John Deere , CAT, or Coyote Brand Seed Corn caps. You incorrectly see them as snobs. They see you as someone who would rather play with his boat electronics than actually learn how to fish.

@@TheEzzieboy As someone who enjoys hanging with all types of fishermen, especially the steelhead hunters, I could spend a day with ANY of the amazing guides and fishermen out here in Montana and never stop learning. And yes. Most of the great dry flyers on the Missouri are typically great at fishing below the surface when required, including my old man. Everyone has their preference. Thanks for your thoughtful comment! You are obviously very experienced.
